Take Flight

Mimosa sat at the top of the roof. She watched as the sun set before her. In the last rays of light, she gave into temptation. Standing up, she unfolded her wings - now a brilliant shade of dark red - and began to fly.

She felt the breeze on her skin and smiled. She flipped in midair, watching the students below, playing near the lake or walking with a friend.

Her grin faded, slightly, and she landed back on the roof. How she longed for company....someone to talk to....

"Dios mio!" Danica breathed as she watched a girl with wings land daintily on the roof after flying around for awhile. She'd just come up as the girl had left and had watched, frozen, as she twirled and flipped in the air.

Dani climbed the last few stairs to the roof, tugged her jacket tighter, and walked over to the girl. "Awesome," she said, smiling. "Oooh, you're so lucky you have wings. Muy bonita."

She shivered a little. Here was a potential friend. Lucky she'd come up to the roof right at this very moment. "I'm Danica."

Mimosa turned. She surveyed the girl up and down. "Thanks, I guess. I'm Mimosa."

She looked fondly at the moon as it began to rise. "I love my wings...but sometimes I wish I didn't have them," she whispered.

Danica smiled. "Oooh, but they're sooooo gorgeous..."

How could she not like them? How could she- oh. "I got it... like, it makes you different? And people think you're weird? Did you go to a public school for people without powers before this, or something? 'Cause that would make me hate my wings, if I had them."

Mimosa smiled and nodded. "Yup, that's basically the story. I can change the color, and even make them invisible," she demonstarted, making it so Danica could not see her wings at all. "but it doesn't undo the damage. Even as a toddler, people stared." She blinked to stop a tear from forming in the corner of her eye.

"I do love them, but it's so hard to fit in sometimes...that's why I came here. I figured that people here would know what I went through."

Danica nodded. "Oooh, I see. At least you can make them invisible, though."

She sighed, cocking her head. "I guess I'm lucky, then. My grandma taught me how to use my powers when I first discovered them, because she has the same ones. Does anyone in your family have powers?" She smiled. "Or wings?"

"My mother is an angel. That's where I get the wings and my empathic powers from. She taught me how to use them and hide them. She also comforted me whenever I came home in tears." The memory brought a weak smile to her face.

"My dad on the other hand, I never knew. He was telekentic, which he also passed onto me. My mother loved him, but appearently he didn't care about her. He left before I was even born." She sighed. "I'm sorry, I'm probably depressing you."

"Awww, your mom sounds really nice. And that sucks about your dad."

Danica paused. "Wait... what is empathic and telekenetic?" She was sure she'd heard it before... she just... didn't know.

Mimosa smiled. "Telekentic means I can move things with my mind...not big things though. Empathic means I sense the emotions around me. And I'm okay with my dad. Can't miss what you never had, right?" The small flicker accross her eyes seemed to disagree though.

Danica's eyes grew wider. "That is sooooo amazing... moving things with your mind. Can you move something? Like, I don't mean to be rude, but I've never seen that before..."

"Can't miss what you never had, right?"

Danica shrugged, wondering how you couldn't miss having a dad.
