In a clearing in the woods behind his granddaughter's house, a very ancient and intricate spell had been woven by Rafael Del Bosque. It had turned part of a dormant forest, waiting to be reawakened by the first rays of spring, into an oasis where the trees were green, the flowers were budding and the ground was a carpet of soft grass and newly sprouted fragrant herbs. It looked and felt alive like it was waiting to be discovered by someone special.

And in the middle, a tall figure of a regal and commanding bearing, wearing soft leather and wool garments belonging to another era, stood waiting for another to arrive.

Rafael Del Bosque had decided not only to take the advice of his young assistant and had decided to spend time getting to know, understand and hopefully bond with his great-grandson, but to show Jeremiah his true druid nature. The person he truly was and always had been, someone who had had to adapt and change with the centuries and hide under the guise of an expensive suit while he ran the family business.

Jeremiah did his best to dress well despite his condition. He couldn't wear normal shirts or pants and shoes were out of the question, but with a little ingenuity and sewing he could dress as well as he could. It helped, he thought, people not see him so much as a monster.

He was visiting Rafael at his grandfather's request and his mother's encouragement. He was still a bit wary after their first encounter after the incident. But he was hopeful that maybe time and reflection had diminished Grandfather's anger.

Jeremiah lumbered into their chosen meeting spot, marveling at the pristine Spring-like quality of the grove. The tips of his stilt-like feet sunk a bit into the soft earth, giving him better purchase as he moved, and his long, monstrous arms let him gently keep his balance by hunching his shoulders and walking at an almost ape-like pace.

The soft wine purple light behind his eye sockets brightened slightly when he saw Rafael. They reminded him very much of the types of clothes his dads used to wear, clothes made themselves by hand.

"Hello, Grandfather," he said quietly, almost reverently as he crouched down to rest on the grass. He used his hands and his feet to blanace himself, almost sitting like a dog on the forest floor.

Rafael smiled when he saw Jeremiah arrive moments later. He had not been 100 percent sure that his grandson would even accept his invitation that afternoon.

"Good afternoon, Jeremiah," Rafael replied as he watched his grandson make himself comfortable.

"Thank you for coming, and before anything, I would ask you to forgive an old man his heated words," he stated stiffly, his words and tone humble, or humbler than normal. Apologizing was not easy for Rafael. Especially considering the fact that the witch rarely apologized for his decisions or behavior anymore.

"And a good afternoon to you as well," Jeremiah replied, the lower jaw of his bestial skull hanging open in an approximation of a smile. He canted his head to the side, pointing the tip of his snout away from Rafael to better look at him directly through one of his eye sockets.

Small vines grew slowly around his cheek bones, sprouting pale pink flowers. An approximation of a light blush. He hadn't expected an apology. Mother had warned him not to. Besides that, he knew that Grandfather had been right to be angry. Jeremiah had been foolish and had put himself and others in danger needlessly.

Still, he appreciated it. "Thank you. And I am sorry as well, to have worried you. I did not have any bad intentions when I performed the ritual, but I suppose that does not matter as much now. I am not angry or upset with you. I am just..."

He lifted one of his hands, looking at it. The light behind his sockets dimmed considerably and a light mist began to leak from the recesses of his skull. Tears, or something like them. "I just do not like looking like this. I scare people. Make them uncomfortable. I have tried to continue like I was before: gardening and going out. But..."

Rafael placed his hands behind his back and quietly listened to Jeremiah, focussing his full attention on his grandson now.

"I know you meant no harm, hijo. One rarely does," he conceded with a tiny sigh. "I just wish that somehow you had come to me first," Rafael told him, finally admitting to the root of his anger and frustration.

Rafael felt an odd sense of guilt, of responsibility. Part of him felt that if he had been the one directing the spell it would not have failed, or if it had, the outcome would have been very different, and his grandson would not have almost died or been turned into the creature he was now.

"You are still Jeremiah, you know," Rafael pointed out. "You may not be in the vessel you were originally born in, but you are still the soul and the little boy your mother gave birth to, and who she would easily give her life for," he explained.

"Also, as much as it may pain me to say this, I'd rather have you like this than a corrupted soul in an angel's body," he told him gently as his other grandson, Tomas, came to mind.

"I understand that," Jeremiah said with a hint of sadness in his voice. His jaw didn't move with his words, the sound emanating from within the cavern of his skull and sounding slightly more hollow for it. "But that doesn't stop people from being afraid and... disgusted by me."

The mist leaked out more profusely now, with small droplets of condensation dripping down the edges of his eye sockets like actual tears. "I am sorry that I didn't come to you. Da, he always told me that necromancy wasn't some dark, evil thing. It was just pulling at the strings of life, and could used for good as much as it was for ill. I thought if I brought that man back, Mother would be happier again and... I did everything right. I've read back over the books and notes that I used. I even used human blood like the ritual said, bought from one of the butcher shops in the city."

Rafael was quiet for a moment as he gathered his thoughts. "While I agree to an extent that necromancy is simply a pulling at the strings of life, there is a morality surrounding it that other magics don't really have," he stated calmly as he touched a leaf that was blooming on a tree beside him.

"I am not sure if your mother ever told you about your uncle," Rafael started, his tone calm but questioning too. He knew Tomas was a touchy subject. "But anyways, he was a self-proclaimed necromancer, and like to play with the strings of life as it were," Rafael said as he glanced at Jeremiah.

"He could raise the recently deceased and parade them around like puppets, using them to do his will, or just for fun," he explained, a hint of obvious distaste and disapproval creeping into his voice as he spoke.

"Now imagine if he did that to someone you loved. How would you feel and more importantly, do you think it is morally correct to do something like that?" he asked gently, hoping that Jeremiah understood what he was getting at.

"I was not making a puppet though. I was calling to a soul, a very person to come back. I know not to control anyone. I am not my uncle, much as I know I remind you all of him."

Jeremiah sounded absolutely dejected at the comparison of himself to Tomas. He didn't know everything, but he knew enough. Enough to know that as sad as it was to say, Tomas' death had been no great loss to the family.

"But I understand all the same. As much as I hate looking like this, I am more upset to think that I may have hurt Shiro. How is she by the way?"

"No seas triste...*Don't be upset," Rafael said gently, lowering his voice. "Nobody is comparing you to your uncle. You are not at all like him...you are very very far from it. And I do know that your heart was in the right place. I just fear what can happen to you if you dabble in it too often. That is all." Rafael admitted, and then let the subject drop.

When Jeremiah asked about Shiro, Rafael pursed his lips and bristled visibly.

"Shiro is doing rather well. Like nothing ever happened actually," he said, very visibly disappointed in his adopted daughter and her refusal to acknowledge her part in Jeremiah's transformation.

"She even has a girlfriend now, some dryad girl," he said just shaking his head. "The one you should feel sorry for or worry about is Tadashi," Rafael stated with a frown.

"A friend brought him home the other night. He was exhausted and in his cat form. I have been meaning to talk to him actually. He seems out of sorts. Quieter than usually," he remarked thoughtfully.

Jeremiah's head dipped low in shame as he remembered Tadashi and felt bad for forgetting his other cousin. They had not spoken much, and Jeremiah hadn't known anything was wrong at all or else he would have... "Maybe I could speak to Tadashi? I have not been the best family to either of them, but at least I know Shiro a bit more."

He glanced down at his giant wooden hands again, his jaw snapping shut in irritation. "I do not want to discomfort him though. I would like to at least look how I feel so that I may feel as I look. If that makes any sense... Grandfather, would you help me at least Glamour myself to look as I used to?"
