Steaming Cup of Joe

Maddie paused with her hand on the doorknob. She gave him her usual wide, goofy smile.

"Oh, no problem! That was as much for me as it was for you, so there isn't a need to thank me for it. Thank you for walking me back to my dorm. I'm not afraid of the dark, but it was nice to have someone to talk to."

Awkwardly, Maddie debated something then half went in for a hug; half stuck her hand out for a shake. Yes, it was a very awkward pose.

Maddie did a prolonged blink and groaned.

"Erm, no?" not a very confident answer, but there it was.

She pulled away, straightened up and pulled the door open so quickly she almost lost her balance.

"Nope, nope, nope," she sang.
