Oddleif was not sure that she could ever get used to this ... to the silence. With the arrival of nightfall, the Starlight Academy and its people retired to their homes, leaving the grounds empty and desolate. A cool wind breezed by, bringing with it the distant songs of crickets and nightingales, but the lights were small and scattered, the moon reigning supreme in its pallor.

And yet, Oddleif had never seen a darker night than this. In her previous life, it was after the sun went down that everything came to life - laughter and lights, shows and games, dancing and music ... the transition from being a part of the circus to being the new girl in this place was ... horrifying, really, but Odd wouldn't be caught dead admitting that she was afraid.

She couldn't just tuck herself into bed and fall asleep so easily - not only was she restless because of her moving to an unfamiliar place, but also because at this hour, where people were starting to doze off in their rooms, she was expected to be fully awake and alert, once. She decided to expend her energy by exploring the grounds - she wondered whether she could find any secrets now that there was nobody to distract her, or tell her off. The energetic teen found a door leading up some stairs, which she had followed eagerly, only to arrive on the rooftop of one of the buildings ... she wasn't sure which. There were plenty of details that she needed to hammer out in her mind, but then again nobody expected her to know the place by heart on her very first day.

There was something else she did not expect - and that was the presence of another on the roof, probably star-gazing towards the clear sky above ... or for whatever other purpose. Oddleif wasn't the suspicious kind, but she was aware this was a school of magic and other oddities - she never knew what to expect, and her imagination ran wild enough to draw incredibly-unlikely conclusions.

... but even so, she wasn't particularly keen on listening to the voice of reason, giving in to her curiosity instead - rather than skulk in the shadows and observe, the ashen-haired teen shyly stepped forward as she called out. "Hello?"

Shinji had nothing to do tonight. He hadn't had a flicker of inspiration to continue with his power training. His training was put to a halt when he decided to make some adjustments and ideas to his own abilities. he didn't want to do the same old things with his powers, he wanted to make them seem brand new to everyone around him and even to himself. His amazement with the large possibilities is unimaginably robust but the only issue is how he would actually go about learning them. And some of them without killing himself in the process. Though he would like to try out something incredibly risky yet fun in his eyes.

He also finished his studies for the week basically since he had nothing really going on in any of his classes. No projects, no reports, and no tests or quizzes either. Was this all he had to do what his night? Sit on the roof top once again trying to scrape up whatever he had left in his head to find something even the tiniest bit amusing to him. Why not just hang out with someone? It's simple. Almost everyone is asleep and those who aren't asleep are complete strangers to Shinji, none of which even look like they would hold a conversation with someone like him. Even though he probably had more in common with the people on this island than he would ever realize, he still felt as if it wasn't true.

Shinji stared into the night sky like it was something he was used to seeing all the time. But in his head, deep in his subconscious beyond all the boring thoughts of this specific night, he knew that it was still as amazing as ever. He was always 'starstruck' by what he saw when he looked up at night even if he saw the same stars gleaming in the night. Tonight was an awfully dark night, however. It wasn't what Shinji was used to and now it was almost hindering. His eyes, though a bright blue color, are naturally tinted to him. The block excessive light so he doesn't blind himself with the use of his powers. With this, all he saw was darkness. Almost as if he was in an abyss deeper than the pits of hell itself. But the stars that burned bright in the sky seemed to be his saving grace. His blindness in the night was a weakness but when he looked into the sky he felt more at home than when he was with his parents.

He sat on the edge of the roof, dangling his feet over the edge as if it was the safest place on the island. His black and blue hoodie made his torso almost invisible in the night and his blue jeans didn't show due to his legs dangling. As he rested his mind and soul under the protection of the stars, e heard something low in the breeze. It wasn't far at all, basically on the roof top with him. Wait, it was on the roof top with him. A voice? No one usually goes up there but him so he was kind of surprised to here someone. 'Hello'? They said to him. It was a higher pitched, small, voice they seemed almost soothing to there ears as it road the wind towards him. In reply, Shinji simply turned his head to the side and spoke his own greeting, "Uh, hi? Sorry if I seem a little awkward, not very many people are usually up here but me. How long have you been there?" He asked casually. He didn't want to seem like he was being rude or anything, he just wanted to know if he was being that oblivious in his own thoughts.

Oddleif was quick to catch her voice as her question came out with an unintended high pitch, clearing her throat mildly as she approached the strange boy that was sitting on the edge of the building. She found it interesting how nonchalant he appeared; she knew many people who seemed simply terrified of heights, hence why the tightrope walkers and high altitude acrobats had such a great reception from the crowd - it was both exciting and completely terrifying to watch. She recalled the way a man had fainted after holding his breath for what seemed like an eternity as an acrobat swung from one end to another, spinning in the air gracefully like a ballet dancer while catching the hanging bars and ropes.

"I just got here, actually." Oddleif answered, her voice taking on its natural lilted tone that was warm and pleasant to listen to, even if her vocabulary was rough at times. "I didn't figure people would be so boring here. Who goes to bed when the moon rises?" She remarked, only to reach the edge and lean forward to peer past it, sizing up the height. "Aren't you afraid being up here?"

Shinji was never one to think first. He always went with what he thought was right and as of now, he figured that being himself would serve him better than anything. In all honesty, he didn't feel like being anyone but himself. It's not like he acts like someone else nor does he try to please others, its more like he wants to be laid back about everything since he was trying to relax on the roof. He enjoyed the company of others but sometimes he liked to be alone. The moment he realized someone else was up there with him, his mind started to think of so many other possibilities that could result from such a thing. But that didn't last long since he did have to keep himself calm or else his power stability would be the one to suffer in this situation, not that of the situation itself.

The moment the girl spoke for the second time, it almost made Shinji feel relaxed anyways without even having to do it himself. Her voice was soft and calm as if she had nothing to worry about in the world. It showed that she wasn't careless but she was very down to earth and approachable. You don't see that very often now these days. Shinji sighed and continued to listen to her. It wasn't an annoyed sigh in the least bit, more like a sigh of relief. "Don't get me wrong, I am sort of new here at the island, though I've been here a little while but this place is anything but boring if I might say so myself." Shinji began. He paused as he watched her lean over the edge of the roof that was next to him. But it didn't take him long to continue talking. "I've seen way too many things happen here in such a short amount of time that I can vouch for the enthusiasm of the island." Shinji stopped now. Nothing more for him to say came to mind. But he did wonder why she looked over the edge so curiously.

A breeze rolled past the too as they conversed on the roof. It was nice and relaxing, though it did bring a chill to his spine. But his wonders about her curiosity were answered once she spoke again. Shinji looked up once again to see the stars above and chuckled a little. He didn't look away from the night sky for a moment as he answered her. "Not in the least bit actually. I'm not really afraid of heights. Actually, I fell off of this roof not too long ago. Boy was it painful." Shinji continued to chuckle for a moment before i died down and he offered a question of his own. "The way you looked over the edge a moment ago, I don't suppose you are either, right?"

Oddleif did not have anything else to add to the subject, except to shrug her shoulders and look unimpressed - admittedly, it was her first day here at Starlight Academy and ... really, first impressions were quite poor. It all looked so ordinary ... then again, she had been used to a way of life where everything she did was completely out of the ordinary. Gold-flecked emerald eyes continued to stare down the building past the edge, before she easily hoisted herself up only to sit down next to the boy. She certainly did not appear hindered by his presence or the height - honestly, Oddleif would have welcomed anything at this point, if only to get rid of the homesickness she was feeling in that moment.

"Yeah, well ..." She looked at Shinji with an amused expression - though it was night and certainly difficult to see, nonetheless one could tell she was in a pretty good mood by her voice alone. "I'm honestly not impressed yet - and it's just the first day. I kinda expected more from a place that's supposed to be 'special'."

A fresh yet chilly breeze blew by past them, slightly tousling Odd's ashen hair and making her fringe fall before her eyes, but otherwise she appeared unaffected - in fact, she was quite comfortable with the cool weather. She always preferred the cold to the hot - perhaps it had something to do with her gift of ice ... or maybe was it the other one around?

Guh ... Odd knew too little to give too much thought to that, and besides - it only confused her more, and gave her a headache, so she was quick to dismiss the thought and move on to something more worthwhile. She ended up staring at Shinji with an expression of complete shock.

"Wot? I don't believe you. Unless you actually fell on something to break your fall, I don't think you would have survived from this height." She paused for a moment, averting her gaze from the boy to stare into the distance. "I'm not afraid of climbin' heights myself ... but I did see someone die after falling. The days that followed were pretty sad for the circus ..." She said with surprising nonchalance, if not complete emotional distance ... though in all due honesty, she didn't want to think about that either.

Shinji had nothing else to say at this point since he was the one that was almost only replying to what she was saying. He didn't want to talk too much at the moment unless a good subject came up to him and he would just start along with a jumbled conversation filled with different words and random things that just pop into his head. he usually does that unfortunately when he isn't calm like now. He tries his best not to do that regardless of how he is but sometimes it is just hard given the increase in his brain activity. Sometimes he wished for a new power specifically because of that reason in particular. But he had to make due with what he had and other than that minor set back, he doesn't mind what he can do. But in thinking about this, he had a thought jump into his thoughts rather quickly, what were her powers?

Shinji smirked at the thought of her not being impressed with how the island turned out. he figured that she would have to meet some certain people before she got what she wanted but he could show her some different things that might be of some interest to her in due time. But first he had to get to know her a little better. Eventually he would like to see what she looks like. He can't really see what she looks like now because of the darkness out tonight and since his eyes naturally dim the surrounding areas but eventually he will see her and at the point he will know all he needs to. You can judge a person from their immediate appearance given a few conversations with them and he felt like she was a pretty cool person already, but he was very curious on what she looked like. "Well, we'll just have to get you acquainted with more people before you get to see the real wonders of this island. Just try not to get into any altercations with anyone like I have. It's hard on the body." He ended with a chuckle.

Hearing her next words, Shinji broke into a large smile. He didn't care if it looked a little creepy because of how big it was, he just couldn't contain himself. He turned his gaze away from the stars above and to the side where her voice was reaching him from. "Do you really think that on a special island like this, there is no one that can survive a fall from this height?" He began still looking towards her. "I didn't have a single thing to land on but the cold hard ground. I mean yea it hurt and I had to lay in bed for about a day or two but I had no serious injuries. It was a little fun aside from the pain I felt." His smile began to fade a little as he turned away from her and peered into the darkness ahead of him. He said nothing else until her heard her say something herself.

It was pretty cool that she wasn't afraid of heights or climbing but that did make Shinji wonder a little more about her abilities. maybe she had something that required being at high places, something like flying. It would be cool to fly. But aside from that, she spoke of someone dying from such a high fall. Shinji opened his mouth to say something but quickly stopped himself since he didn't want to bring up any bad memories for her. The mood was only just starting to darken and he didn't want to influence it any more. Though it was slightly confusing on how she felt about it given her calm demeanor when she said it. maybe that was just her way of coping with it. maybe she was just that strong, who knows? Either way it was better that he didn't speak on that subject since he didn't want anything to get out of hand.
