As she sat in the now quiet staff room, Celeste Forestier, the Home Economics teacher, looked over her rather busy and hectic schedule for the coming month of December. She scanned it twice to see if there was anything out of the ordinary. She knew the schedule was still pending, changes could be made, students added, classes moved because of the Christmas holidays. It was as all moths a bit up in the air.

Getting up from the table, Celeste went over to the small kitchen area and helped herself to a fresh cup of coffee, taking a moment to check the fridge and cupboards to see if she needed to bring any supplies from her own classroom to stock the staffroom kitchen.

She wasn't expecting anyone to be in the staff room, really. It was all a matter of chance that as Jia An entered the premises, she came face-to-back with the slight frame of Celeste Forestier. She was rifling through the fridge and cupboards, as if searching for something that Jia An didn't know. Briefly, the teacher stopped in her tracks. Should she continue? Leave? Stand in a corner and hope Celeste wouldn't see her?

She was new enough to the island, she knew. And frankly, she was freezing -- and in a moment without tethering her loose tongue, had revealed this fact to the other teacher. Celeste Forestier was a petite woman with a voraciousness that more than made up for it; it greatly contrasted Jia An's own wallflower attitude, which was something she'd have to get used to. As a chemistry teacher, Jia An often sequestered herself away to the science labs, preferring to bask in the silence and busywork without having to really interact with people.

Which was a problem, since she was now also a teacher.

She realised she'd been standing awkwardly in the middle of the room long enough to warrant a kick. Well. The only way to go was forward, right? She might as well formally introduce herself, unlike the lackadaisical one back in the community centre. Jia An cleared her throat, moving into the kitchen with Celeste. She was normally surrounded by birds of all sorts, but the birds didn't seem to like the staff room.

"Hey, uh, something you need? Ms Forestier, was it?"

Mallory flew into the staff room when that new teacher opened the door. She had heard a new teacher was coming, so she was planning to avoid them until they acclimatized to the island. She had enough students asking if she was really a teacher.

What was a problem though was that she only had so long until her next class, and while she wanted coffee, basically everyone was in the kitchen.

Landing nearby and shifting back to her vampire state, she sighed. Better get this over with. "Excuse me, Celeste? Are are you making more than one cup? I could go for one right now."

Celeste was rifling through a cupboard over the staff kitchen sink, moving a few packs of cookies and tins of biscuits to the side as she checked to see if there were enough tea bags and coffee filters, or if she needed to add them to her weekly shopping list. Hearing a soft voice behind her, she closed the cupboard and turned around.

"Ms. Li," she exclaimed when she saw who it was, happy to see the academy's newest addition. Their meeting at the community centre had been brief, mainly because Celeste had had to leave earlier than she had anticipated.

"It's actually Miss Forestier, but most people call me Ms.," she informed her as she changed the filter on the coffee pot, having decided to make a new full pot. "But do call me Celeste, only my students or their parents call me Miss Forestier."

"Mallory! Just in time," Celeste said as she greeted the school's history teacher when she suddenly entered the staff room looking for coffee. "I am just making a fresh pot," she said as she added the coffee grinds and a small pinch of salt to help reduce the bitterness of the brew and make it smoother.

"Have you met Ms. Li yet?" she asked curiously as she added fresh water to the pot and turned on the machine.

"Um," said Jia An, because she was intelligent like that. Celeste's voice was like the tolling of a bell, chiming through the air in a tone more exuberant than Jia An thought any voice could be. But somehow, Celeste managed it, and somehow, Jia An wasn't very surprised. She just... seemed like the type. The happy type. The really happy type.

They sound... the same? Thought Jia An, now confused. Back home, most teachers were either "Ms, Mrs, or Madam," and it was obvious what each one sounded like. She still didn't know how Celeste was telling that she'd said "Ms" instead of "Miss", but attributed her knowledge to Island Life. Jia An was new, after all. There was no telling how many more things she'd have to get used to. Speaking of which --

-- "Wha--"

What the hell was that? A bat?? Wait, no, what??? A human??

Jia An blinked dumbly at the scene. The bat had flown into the staff room and without any pomp, turned into a girl. A very striking girl, her brain appended, but a bat-turned-girl nonetheless. She'd known there would be supernatural beings in Manta Carlos the moment she'd accepted the invitation, but... It was still hard to wrap her mind around. Still! As dumbstruck as she was, Jia An was nothing if not polite, and so she accepted whatever naming conventions existed on the island with an acquiescing: "Celeste, then."

"Mallory!" The very same woman said, talking to the bat-kid as if bats becoming people were an everyday occasion. "Have you met Ms Li yet?"

Despite no one having actually done anything yet, Jia An still felt like all eyes were now on her. The new kid on the block, so to speak. She paused. Clasped her hands behind her back. Fiddled with the shirttails poking out from beneath her brown sweater. She looked from Celeste, to the newly-christened Mallory, to Celeste, and then fixed her stare firmly on the coffee pot.

"Jia An will do," said Jia An, also very intelligently. "And no, I don't believe we have. I'm Li Jia An; I teach physics and chemistry. You are Ms Mallory...?" Because no matter how young someone looked, with Manta Carlos and its inhabitants, you could never know.

As expected, her arrival startled the poor girl. At least she was getting her coffee. She smiled at the Home Economics teacher. "Great. Thanks Celeste."

Leaning against the nearest wall, she shook her head. "If going by first names, Call me Mallory. Otherwise call me Miss Wilshire. I teach history here. Nice to meet you Jia An."

She fiddled with her Aura bracelet. It wouldn't be good for Jia to get affected.

Being a nurse had made Henghai feel out of place in the staffroom at times. Honestly, it made him miss teaching. Back then, he felt like part of a group that was doing some good in the world. Too bad his desires were too centered on healing.

But never mind that. He wanted some coffee. Not for the effects, but for the taste. Cold and bitter. Like himself.

Henghai entered the staffroom giggling quietly at himself at that self-deprecating joke. Then the laughter slowly trailed off when he noticed other people in the room. He gave a polite wave to everyone, looking mildly surprised to see a new face. No, wait, she looked familiar. Those wings were definitely familiar.

"Hey guys. I smell coffee. Mind if I have some?"

As they were chatting, Celeste saw out of the corner of her eye someone else enter the staffroom. Turning a bit to see who it was, she couldn't help but smile. It had been ages since she had seen him around the staff room, "Mr. Leizu, Henghai," she corrected herself, "it's been a while," she said as she greeted him.

"And like Mallory, you are just in time. I just made a new pot of coffee," she said as she pulled down some clean mugs from the cupboard along with some sugar, honey, and from the fridge some milk and cream. All the mugs said things like, "Keep calm and pretend it's on the lesson plan, Don't make me use my teacher voice, or Trust me, I'm a teacher" on them.

Handing each teacher, Jia an included, a fresh cup of hot coffee, Celeste then refilled her cup too. "Have you met Jia an by chance? She's the school's new chemistry teacher," she explained warmly as she casually leaned back against the kitchen counter.

She desperately wanted to palm at her face and sigh but that would be rude, so Jia An made do with ruffling her feathers and shaking them back into place. There was just. So much. To take in. So. Mallory Wilshire. Jia An'd no experience in pronouncing... very english names of any sort, so she was not going to even attempt spelling that. She'd just write it down after this meeting with the phonetic pronunciation and pray that she remembered it. Mallory was also fiddling with something -- an Aura Warning bracelet, Jia An realised. She knew enough to recognise the bracelet, but not actually identify what kind of aura Mallory had. Jia An wondered if she should be wearing one too: she did tend to attract birds, after all, but she'd been reassured that bird-compelling wasn't very dangerous and so she was very much safe. Hopefully. They'd tell her if it became a problem.

Then. Another person. Cantered in. He?? She?? Was a humanoid creature standing on cloven feet, with a great big tail swinging behind it. Them? No matter, that query was quickly resolved when Celeste addressed them as Mr, and Jia An relaxed. On her own she would never have been able to figure it out without bumbling around and making some sort of social faux pas, so she really was grateful for Celeste's presence.

Cups clinked as Celeste retrieved them, ceramic against ceramic. The smell of brewing coffee permeating the air restored some sense of normalcy to the scene then, as if a man on hooves had not just entered and a girl had not previously been a bat. Speaking of, the girl looked at most fourteen but was teaching history, so Jia An had been right in assuming she was older than presented. Mallory would do just fine. Somehow, Jia An got the feeling that while she didn't look the youngest, she was.

But before Jia An could politely refuse the coffee, Celeste had already placed it in her hands and now she was struggling to find something to do with it. It wasn't that she was ungrateful -- really, Celeste had already done so much for her in the ten minutes they'd been in this room! -- she just didn't drink any sort of caffeine. Her mother had been particular about her daughter drinking coffee and tea, citing sleeplessness, and so Jia An had never formed a habit of it. Hesitantly, she took a sip, just to appear polite anyway. It was... indescribable. Jia An did not fancy the taste in the least, but it was warm still, and she found that the warmth far outweighed the taste. So against her better knowledge, she continued to drink.

At the mention of her name, she looked up and waved. She didn't know what she was supposed to say since Celeste was clearly doing all the introducing (and Jia An was very immensely happy that Celeste was helping her with that) and she didn't feel like she really needed to say anything more.

Sipping her drink, she internally laughed at the message on her cup. "Listen to me. I can fail you." Not something she'd do, but it was a threat to the unruly high school students.

Nodding at Henghai, she raised her glass in greeting. "Glad to see you still use this room. The coffee is much better in here." She wasn't joking. The baristas at the nearby always seemed to mess up her order, and once or twice, they gave her hot chocolate instead.

The new teacher, Jia An, didn't seem as fond of the drink, though she did drink. "Hey, do you have this sort of thing off the island?" Mallory was referring to their coffee club meeting, and while it was mostly to get her talking, Mallory was also interested in what life off the island was like since she came.
