"Granddaughter and daughter of mine," Rafael called out as he entered the backyard with five hired hands at a little before seven in the evening. Three of the men carried in large boxes of supplies for the gathering tonight while two others brought in coolers with food as well as an imported suckling pig to be roasted on a spit.

"Where do you want the...? Nope, never mind," he stated with one minded purpose as he gestured for the men to follow him, having almost immediately spotted what he was looking for - a place to get a fire started so he could set up the spit to roast the meat and the seafood he had brought along.

"Thank you," Celeste called out to her father as he set up the bonfires for the evening's events.

"Should we help him?" Zora asked as she watched her grandfather order people around.

"No, just let him do his thing. He enjoys it. When I was a young girl, he'd come and get me and mum, take us to some beach where we'd have a picnic and make a huge bonfire, " Celeste told her niece as she looped her arm in hers, and lead her away to sit on a bench under a Weeping Willow while Rafael got everything ready for the evening's festivities.

After an hour or two of talking and just relaxing together under the tree, Zora and Celeste decided it was time to start preparing the bundles of St.John's Wort, wormwood, verbena, lavender, mint, clary sage, and rosemary that was said to protect against evil and offer curative powers.

They then brought out the nocino - a liquor made from green walnuts picked the year before on this night and big bowls of strawberries and raspberries that they placed together with the food and drink that Rafael's hired help had set out.

"Zora and I are going to get changed, papa," Celeste called out to her father, who was enjoying himself roasting the meat over the fire and adding wood to the other much bigger bonfire that would be lit at midnight.

............................

As always, there is no posting order. The festivity is normally family and close friends, though it is customary to welcome guests if they wish to join. It is around 9 pm (for the first few posts) and will go on til the early morning hours of the following day.

There are two bonfires - one where Rafael is cooking, and a larger bonfire that is set afire at midnight. There is also a table with food and drink. It is a very casual event where one is supposed to eat, drink, dance and just have a good time basically. Event attire is casual. Location - I am gonna say Rafael's home, in the backyard which is near the coast.

Oh .- and there are fireworks at midnight too.

Iesha basks close to the larger of the two bonfire, finding its warmth comforting during the chill of the evening. While she was excited that Celeste wanted her here and wanted to be support of her, her mind dwelled on other things. On this night she is reminded of Narraine, how much she loved her and going so far to include her in the traditions of Arore's. Yet right when Narraine began to fill that hallow void felt empty by the loss of her family, she was left behind. Now it was all playing over again... and she worried what if Celeste would leave her behind as well?

Iesha stretched and let out a yawn, then coiled herself into a tight ball as she laid close to fire, her eyes watching the flickering flames dance about. She wished her mind wasn't so preoccupied thoughts of abandonment but the between this night and that night with Narraine was a bit... uncanny. It was almost like deja vu for Iesha.

Tadashi had been wearing some casual but very nice custom clothing when he arrived. Well, arrived was probably the wrong word for it since he did live there after all. Either way though he'd found a nice chair near where Rafael was cooking and curled up on it. In cat form. He was more comfortable like that for the moment and he yawned wide as he blinked and looked around.

Felen honestly felt a little bit out of place at the family gathering. Not because the others were't welcoming or anything- he just saw himself as a bodyguard first, and a guest second. Plus this wasn't really his family. He hadn't seen his parents very often since he'd been conscripted, but at least he'd had the rare chance to visit on leave. Now he was on this island with little to no hope of going back. It wouldn't drive him crazy or hurt him too badly, but it did put a slight damper on what appeared to be a very nice family tradition the Del Bosques were following.

That's not to say he was sulking in a corner though, He and Polgid both were helping Rafael with carrying wood about. Fortunately Polgid's own blades could easily cut through wood and the toxin would absolutely not linger to cause any ill effects when the fire was lit. Felen had long ago tested that particular issue back when he was making campfires for the other soldiers in his unit. He was though fairly quiet as he worked, aside from the harsh demonic words of his commands for Polgid.

Despite having been adopted into the family for over a year by this point, Shale had never gotten very used to gatherings like this. The casual warmth was still fairly foreign. Back in his dimension, he certainly had a sense of community with the other gargoyles, but with the dangerous nature of their positions the opportunity to actually relax was off the table completely.

He arrived in gargoyle form initially, taking every opportunity to work on strengthening his wings after they were damaged in the spire. He saw a fair number of people already there, not really worried about showing up entirely on time. Shrinking down to approximately cat size to land more conveniently, he lifted a stone paw and flicked his barbed tail in a general greeting. "Hey, guys. Sorry if I'm running a little late, wanted to get some extra school stuff out of the way."

(Sorry these are gonna be shortish until I can break them up individually XD )

"You there, Felen, is it?" Rafael said as he addressed the elf, who had been helping him with keeping fires alive and with whom he had had only a passing word, due to the hustle and bustle of getting things set up. However, now that things were ticking along and the meat only needed casual attention, he could talk to the person guarding his granddaughter so meticulously.

"You are the one guarding my granddaughter, no?" he said, as he gave the spit a one-half turn, his tone between matter-of-fact and questioning.

————————————

As soon as she came out of the house, dressed casually in jeans and a warm hoodie sweatshirt with a pair of espadrilles on her feet, a complete 180 from what she's normally be found wearing, Zora walked over to the bonfire and sat down near the young lamia.

"Ieasha?" she inquired politely after she had quietly watched the young girl for a moment before greeting her. Something about her demeanor resonated with Zora ... there was an odd sort of wistfulness surrounding her that she immediately recognized.

"I'm Zora, Celeste's niece," she explained, pretty sure she had not met Roldan's daughter yet, but knowing a little bit about her from what Celeste had told her.

...............................

"Shale!" Celeste called out and waved to him as she exited the house moments after her niece - dressed similarly to Zora, but wearing shorts instead of jeans - catching sight of him just as he was landing in the backyard.

"You made it," she stated, her tone happy and satisfied at the same time. Then, "Wait!" she laughed as she noticed something.

"You are almost the same size as Tadashi," she said as she noticed the cat now curled up on a chair - she had seen him arrive earlier and take a seat in that exact seat, and guessed that the young man - who oddly enough was now her step-brother - had transformed himself into his cat form.

Felen turned to the elder Del Bosque and nodded, in a simple but respectful manner. "Yes, sir. Felen Velgaren. I would say 'at your service' but that wouldn't be technically true," he offered a small smile as he extricated a couple pieces of wood that had become wedged between the spikes on Polgid's body.

"I am indeed assisting Ms. Zoraida with security and anything else she requires to safely go about her business."

Tadashi yawned again and looked up, his gaze passing between Celeste and Shale. And then his attention was caught by the flicking of Shale's tail. It awoke the same kind of playfulness in him that his siblings did sometimes. "Perfect size for pouncing," he warned as he scrunched up and then leapt towards Shale. Trying to be very careful about the barbed nature of the tail. And spoiling the surprise in favor of giving the other boy a chance to get out of the way if he wasnt up for that kind of play.

Watching Felen with real interest now as he took the wood from his familiar, Rafael chuckled appreciatively at his answer. He had not expected the elf to possess such a fine sense of humour.

"I am glad to hear that," Rafael said with a nod. "Besides, it's not me who you need to please anyway," he added pointedly as he glanced at the other bonfire and at his granddaughter with an unreadable expression.

"How is she doing?" Rafael asked Felen as he continued to watch Zoraida with a concerned expression on his face. He had never really approved of her dating Broen, and what he had done to his daughter's daughter was almost unforgivable in Rafael's mind.

Shale's eyes flicked over to Celeste when he hear her call out, giving a nod back. "Hey, mom. Sorry for being late." He was about to go over to greet her when she pointed out Tadashi, and he turned to look over the cat.

It was difficult to gauge his expression as a gargoyle, but there was mild amusement in his eyes at the comparison from Celeste. He tilted his head when Tadashi mentioned pouncing, but even as he watched him sailing through the air towards him he stayed put. After all, despite their similar size, Shale was still exceptionally heavy, and the cat now flopping on top of him didn't even earn a flinch. "...Oh. Uh. Hey there."

"No, though I suspect if you didn't like me I would find it a great deal more difficult to keep my job protecting your granddaughter. Rest assured that I know how my priorities align here," Felen nodded and then looked between Rafael and Zoraida, passively noting how the elder man's expression began as inscrutable and shifted to reveal his concern over how his granddaughter was doing.

With a curt exclamation in the demonic tongue Polgid bowed slightly and slipped away to the fringes of the area to await further instruction.

The direct question about how Zora was doing caught Felen in a slightly difficult place. Clearly Rafael was family and was only trying to see that Zoraida was cared for and helped through the current difficulties. But Felen had been quite honest when he mentioned his priorities. First to Zoraida, then to her business and family. In that order, effectively. "I mean no disrespect here sir, but I would not share that which Ms. Del Bosque doesn't wish me to. We both know she has been maligned with less than pleasant events of late and is working through dealing with them. I hope the help I am providing is easing that difficulty." Felen straightened and met Rafael's eyes with his own. Conveying as best he could that he was not being dishonest and trying to hide anything, merely loyal.

Tadashi sprang off the chair and sailed towards the miniature gargoyle form. No claws out, and clearly in a playful mood. But he hadn't factored in how dense and heavy Shale would be. The soft furred cat flopped onto Shale with his paws scrabbling at his shoulders and then he slid back off without even budging Shale an inch. He rolled over to land more or less on his feet next to him and flicked his tail with slight annoyance. "... hey... I guess I didn't think that one through," he answered with a slight laugh. Or as close as one could do while in cat form.

"Sorry, don't let me interrupt you saying hi to your mom..."

Rafael's jaw set a little at the remark about how his approval could sway Felen's position with his granddaughter. How he wished that were true. Rafael had not cared for Broen. He had made his reservations about the young man known to Zoraida, and yet, she had still taken him on as her bodyguard, dismissing his concerns at the time.

"I see," he said as he met Felen's earnest gaze, clearly having not expected the elf to shut him down like he had. It was something that both annoyed and impressed Rafael. Annoyed because Felen wouldn't elaborate - which meant Rafael would have to actually talk to Zoraida, something he was not great at... women's tears horrified him, and he feared Zoraida was still a ticking time bomb of emotions. And impressed because he had stood his ground, and very tactfully, put Rafael in his place by informing him that his loyalty was to his granddaughter.

"In that case, I will not pry. However, before I drop the subject... Can you tell me if she is getting better? A simple yes or no will suffice," Rafael stated, just needing some sort of reassurance that she was actually okay despite everything.
