It had been a few weeks now since the case had come to a close. Well, not officially. Officially, Lindsey Masterson was still at large. Still a threat to most of the women on the island. But Roldan knew the truth. That animal (he definitely wasn't a man) was rotting in the woods. Or at least what was left of him.

Roldan had tried to move past it. He had proposed to Narraine. He was letting her sister, another new arrival, sleep in his apartment while she adjusted to life on the island. He had distracted himself in any way he could. But whenever he went to work and saw the open case file it just reminded him.

He had broken his code. Everything that had been drilled into him in the academy. Everything he had taken so seriously. Out the window. Twice, in fact. Public indecency had been the first thing. He had written that off as unpreparedness. He hadn't known about Narraine's condition during the full moon and he had taken steps to not be out in public any longer than was necessary.

But tampering with a crime scene. Falsifying evidence. All so the people who put down that piece of shit wouldn't be arrested for doing what part of him had wanted to. Being a good man had gotten in the way of being s good cop, and it was tearing him up inside.

His morning was sluggish. Alex had offered to front him for a couple of weeks off from work as an early wedding present. He needed it, to be honest. With the wedding approaching (he knew Narraine wouldn't want to wait any longer than necessary) he needed to be in the right headspace.

Coffee helped. A run around the block helped. But coming back before the sun had risen, before his temporary houseguest had woken up, Roldan still needed a distraction.

None of his usual teammates would be up right now. And he hated playing with randys. Settling down on the couch in his boxers and his bath robe, he fiddled with the controller. Skyrim, maybe? He had beaten it several times already. But a mindless playthrough, just to let off steam might be nice.

Hey, you. You're finally awake. You were trying to cross the border, right? Walked right into that Imperial ambush, same as us, and that thief over there.

Honua hadn't been here long. She had fled her homeland in search of a better life, and so far, she had found it. She didn't have anything of her own yet, but she had found her sisters and had managed to meet some people kind enough to help her along the way. Roldan was one of them. He was a good man. A dragon. But a man. He was also her sisters Fiance.

Since coming here she had learned a few things. Dragons were not monsters, though they still were creatures of her worst nightmares. The other was that Roldan was a troubled man. He had a burden on his heart that seemed to eat away at him. She had watched for a while, tried to discern for herself what consumed him so deeply, but he was well guarded and good-natured. He tried to not let her see his trouble, but she was not blind.

Narraine had been by a few times, she had spoken with her sister in great length about this new world, and about the troubling news back home, before her sister had retreated to spend time with her future husband.

Now though, as Honua stirred from her sleep, woken by a nightmare, she discovered that as always Roldan was not in bed. She had made it a habit over the last few nights to sneak into bed with him. It was a simple comfort, that made it easier to fall asleep. And not once had he taken advantage of her.

She sighed as she rolled free of the bed. Honua had no need for blankets or much clothing for that matter, given her body temperature was so high. However Roldan had insisted she wear something, and so he had provided her with a sweater. It was larger than her, and covered all of her, while also being fireproof. which given her condition was a bonus.

As she slipped silently out of the bedroom, she picked up on his scent. He had been through this way recently. She could taste salt on the air, sweat. He had been running. She had no concept of time as far as they tracked it here, but she could easily tell the sun hadn't risen yet.

From the living room, she could hear men speaking. They were talking about the sons of Skyrim, and imperials. Whatever that meant. She knew it was wrong to spy, but she was curious, so she crept along the hallway avoiding any creaky boards, till she was positioned behind the couch. Roldan was there, holding a device in his hands, while people talked back and forth on the tv.

She watched them for a few moments, one man was executed, and another about to be. However before he could, a Dragon swooped in with all its menace and torched everything. She let out a squeak of terror as she dropped behind the couch, hiding her face in her hands.

Roldan was absorbed in... we'll certainly not the game. He knew this storyline, had played it enough that he didn't even pay attention to the talk of Imperials and rebellion anymore. He just wanted to get out in the main world and start killing things.

The dragon didn't phase him. He knew it couldn't hurt his character. It was all scripted. But the squeak of terror behind him made him jump a bit. Shit, Honua was awake.

Pausing the game, making sure to be inside the tower so she didn't see the dragon anymore, he turned and looked over the back of the couch.

"Hey Honua. I, uh... dammit. I didn't realize you were awake."

Shit. She had reacted really poorly when he first transformed to show her that he was, in fact, a dragon.

"It's not real. The dragon on the screen. It's just a... like a story, but with visuals."

Honua cowered behind the couch, shaking a little until she heard Roldan Speaking to her. She had made too much noise, now on top of everything he would know that she was out of bed and had been spying on him. Slowly she pulled her hands from her face to look up at him. Despite being so much larger than he was, she was pretty good at making herself much smaller than other people, as she wrapped her tail around herself tightly.

He didn't seem upset with her. In fact, he seemed concerned that she was afraid as he tried to reassure her. Perhaps part of her already knew the dragon wasn't real, but it looked real, and it moved and sounded real. Or at least real enough.

"I-I'm sorry for intruding. I didn't mean to interrupt" She said in a quiet tone. The last thing she wanted to do was cause him any grief, after all, he had been kind enough to open his home to her.

Given that it was still early, Honua had not had time to paint her body or face, or even do her hair. Instead, rather, her long blonde hair hung freely down her back. She had few scars on her face, at least none that were noticeable so at this moment she might have simply looked like a Hispanic woman, if not for the long black and caramel tail that wrapped around her body.

"I woke up from a bad dream, and.... could I-Could I see this story?" She asked relaxing a bit as she looked up at him.

Roldan smiled down at Honua. It was almost like caring for a little sister or a daughter. "I'm not upset either you. Just worried. I don't want you to be scared."

Hopping up, he stepped around the couch quickly and crouched beside her, trying to not appear any larger than her than he could help. Tentatively, with full intention of stopping if she showed signs of not wanting him to touch her, Roldan reached out to brush some of her hair from her face.

"You want to see the story? There are a lot of dragons in it. It's about fighting them and saving the world from the worst of them all..."

Actually, now that he thought about it. Maybe exposure therapy like this could work? He nodded.

"Well, if you want to. But how about breakfast first?"
