Rory had sat Jude down and explained how she'd told Broen that Jude was romantically attracted to him. She'd explained her reasoning (it made things easier and he'd needed to hear it). Rory had been as straightforward and calm as she could muster.

They sat outside, a good deal away from the house where Rory could see if anyone was approaching them. So they could stop talking if anyone came near. No worry about people overhearing them. Besides, it was peaceful as hell out here.

"Sorry, Jude, but I felt it was the best course of action."

It was serious. Okay. Probably serious. And then he'd gotten there and Rory had sat him down that Zora had confessed to Broen (ugh) and that Broen didn't know what his feelings were doing (double ugh), and then she'd confessed she'd told Broen that Jude liked him and then Jude had attempted to suffocate himself with his own hands.

Why. God, why.

Well, he knew why, but it was still awful anyway.

Jude let out a groan as he tried to muster the energy to respond.

"I wasn't going to tell him. Maybe never. Because he's different now, and what if... fuck, what if the things I like about him were the school? What if he's not even like that anymore?"

Rory shrugged. "Then nothing happens. He, uh, shit. Nothing is going to happen now anyway and if you stop liking him don't ask him out. Or say no if he asks you out. Simple enough.

"It only feels messy. I get it. I'm right there with you and I'm pissed we're here but if I'm being honest I didn't want only Zora to have confessed to him and take advantage, so I had to show him he has some fucking options or something.."

Broen asking him out? That sounded... goddamn ludicrous. Jude reached up, pinching at the bridge of his nose at the idea of it. It sounded stupid. Only maybe it wasn't stupid.

"They feel like two different people," Jude admitted. "I don't know. I haven't really talked with him. Like, brief nod across the room. Small talk at dinner. But we haven't talked. I don't want to... I don't know. I'm not sure he's ready. I'm not sure I'm ready."

Rory shrugged again. "I didn't get much a choice, so I had to suck it up and talk when I was afraid to anyway. Take your time. He might ask you to yell at him, who the hell knows anymore. For the record, expect to get slapped if you do yell at him."

She laughed a little. Letting it die down, Rory rubbed her face. "I know this is a shit show, I know it is. We can make it work. It'll get better. I'm not sure where it will, uh, lead us. Fuck! Jude... I really. I can't. With this Zora shit? I'm so fucking mad."

Okay. He could do that, probably. Something normal. Maybe he'd straight up steal that. Make Broen watch... He didn't know, Cutthroat Kitchen? That seemed like something he'd like.

Well, it seemed like something he would have liked. It was impossible to tell.

Goddamnit.

"I think I'm going to run for student council," Jude said. "I have time now. I thought about it before, but I changed my mind for work, but... work matters less. I don't even have a platform or anything. It just seems like something I missed out on at home."
