Somewhere calm... or not

Jolin smiled and grabbed the apple from the air. She held it out in the palm of her hand. Color started appearing on it, and soon it was striped with all the colors of the rainbow.

"I can alter the shape and physical appearance of living things... or things like fruit and eggs, even though they're not technically living. I can only do it to some extent though. I can also talk to animals..."

She paused as she suddenly got an idea. It was something she always used to do for her sisters that always made her laugh. She concentrated as her eyes began to grow to about three times their size and they became patterned with red and yellow spirals. She let the color of her eyes shift so it looked as if the spirals were moving, and then took a bite out of her rainbow colored apple.

Lex raised a thin eyebrow. "Wow. That's absolutely amazing. I have to say, you're more powerful than me." she said honestly, amazed at the girl's powers.

Then the girl changed her eyes, and Lex laughed. She was laughing delicately, not guffawing, but she found it amusing. "Wow. That's good. I can't do anything cool like that." she adjusted her position, catching sight of the x shaped scar on the back of her hand. Away went her mind to the corner, and she forced herself away from it.

"I can only do non amazing things." as she spoke, Jolin was slowly raising off the ground. "Like that." she directed her eyes to the space between Jolin and the ground, hoping that the girl would look too. She popped another fudge in her mouth, holding the girl up with no problem at all.

"Oh..." said Jolin blushing a little once again. "It's not that amazing really, just good for entertainment really..." She thought it was odd that the girl called her gift "amazing". She had never really thought of it like that at all. She found the prospect of telekenisis much more amazing. And that idea only higtened as she lifted off the ground.
"Oh my!" Jolin exlaimed as she saw the air between her and the chair. She let her eyes return to normal. She closed them for a moment to enjoy the feeling of having absolutely nothing but air underneath her. It really was amazing. She began to summersault in the air, and laughed as she did. The sight of the world whizzing by and the feeling of absolutely nothing underneath her was just too much for her to keep inside, she couldn't help but laugh. She'd wanted to fly since she first talked to the birds.

Lex grinned. She'd never known anyone to react like that to flying, but she was ok with. She had enough control for the girl to do whatever she wanted. She was most definately lighter than a tall wall of rocks. She popped another piece of fudge in her mouth, and allowed it to melt, before speaking, Jolin's altitude never dropping. "Keep in mind, I've had my powers since I was six." she added, not wanting to discourage the girl.

Lex had had ages to work out the problems in her powers. She guessed that Jolin hadn't.

Jolin stopped spinning abrubtly when the girl mentioned how long she had had her powers. Jolin preferred not to remember when she got hers. Her expression became very sullen indeed, and without meaning to, her eyes and hair turned grey, as did the apple, and her skin became quite pale. That happened sometimes when she thought of her childhood, and the medication and... she snapped out of it and looked at the girl, the grey of her eyes giving them a very empty look.

"I'd like to be let down now..." she requested. Her voice sounded so sad, sadder than she would have liked it to. Even though she knew it would be obvious, she wanted to pretend like nothing was wrong. She was silent for what seemed for a very long time, and before she knew it she was speaking again.

"I was nine when I got my powers. They thought I was crazy of course, so they locked me up. I was on medication until I was almost twelve. I was so weak all the time... and everything seemed so hopless... it made me see things... it made everything so different. I began to think I was crazy... I went to therapists but no one could help me... until I finally realized what it was... until I realized it had all been for nothing...

Slowly, as she spoke, the original color returned to her eyes, hair, skin, and the apple. She gave a weak smile to the girl in appology for what she had just said and hung her head so the girl might not see her cry.

Lex let the girl down when she was requested to do so, and as the girl told her her story, Lex's eyes immediately filled with compassion. She pulled herself up onto the couch, lifting the younger girl's head with her hand, wiping away her tears with the other. "You're safe now." she said softly, petting the girl's hair in a sisterly way.

Yes, this child was so close to home. The flashbacks were rushing into her head, and she forced them back. It was a fight, but she managed to do it. Everyone had thought that there was something wrong with her, and their mistake had nearly cost her her life. "I understand more than you know..." she spoke softly, and couldn't help but be thankful that the girl had gotten out early.

Lex had been stuck in that place until this year.

Jolin sat there for a few minutes, letting her emotions run their course, and when the thoughts left her mind she took a deep breath and smiled again.
"Thank you again." she said to the girl. "You were an awflly big help. I'm sorry you had to hear all that, but I'm glad you were so nice about it."

Lex smiled softly. "That's what I'm here for. Consider me your honorary big sister, here whever you need me." she pulled herself into a crosslegged sitting position on the couch, facing the younger girl.

"Besides. People with pasts like ours need to stick together." she added, not going any further on the topic, since that was as far as she would allow herself to go.

Then she chuckled. "You know what I just realized? I don't know your name. Do you remember mine?" she cocked her head to the side. She'd told the girl her name, but was pretty sure the girl had missed it.

Jolin blushed.

"Sorry, no I'm not really good with names... but I'm Jolin. I'm sorry I didn't introduce myself earlier."

Jolin was appologizing just to be polite, she had a feeling that the girl wouldn't be annoyed with her or anything.
