Somewhere calm... or not

Jolin walked into the lounge and sighed. She clutched her bag as if it would save her life and walked over to one of the chairs. She pushed it as much into the corner as possible and sat there with her legs up close to her chest, and then opened the book in front of her so her face was not visable. Her first day had not gone very well at all. She sat staring blankly at the pages, not even really reading, just thinking... thinking about so many things. She heard someone say something, but she didn't hear any words. She snapped out of her daze and looked up.

"Pardon..?" she asked blankly.

Lex smiled softly. She normally didn't talk to people, but this particular one looked about ready to cry, so she'd decided to make an exception. Her hair was pulled into a crooked pony tail, showing signs of a recent shower, and her clothes appeared to be pjs. A pair of fuzzy black slippers on her feet. It hadn't taken her long to get comfortable here.

"I said, You seem like you could use some understanding company." she repeated, not bothered in the least by the younger girls absentness. She sat crosslegged on the floor across from Jolin, and introduced herself. "I'm Lex. I just came here too." she spoke secretively, as though nobody was supposed to know.

Jolin smiled at the girl, a bit surprised, but relieved.

"Thanks..." she said quietly.

She thought for a moment about what had happened that day and what had happened for the past several years and before she knew it she was zoning out again, thinking about everything. She snapped out of it suddenly and sighed when she realized the girl was still there.

"It's just hard, you know? You come here because you're different, and you think it'll be okay, because everyone's different... and then you get treated like you're different in a bad way and everyone else is different in a good way... if that makes sense..." she trailed off, but her voice was getting so quiet Lex probably wouldn't have been able to hear her soon anyway.

She nodded. She understood exactly how the girl felt. Mind you, it had been at the school for delinquents that she'd felt like that. She forced her mind away from that dark corner of memories. "I know what you mean." she spoke softly and gently, which would have had most people who knew her gaping at her. "I know it's hard to hear, especially from someone you just met, but take it from someone with experiance. Just hang in there." she smiled apologetically, frustrated that she had no other advise or consolation than that.

She shifted her position. She hated that corner in her mind that her thoughts were always straying to. She forced herself to stay away from it, desprately scrambling for something else to think about.

As it turned out, the thing her mind fell on was how kind Trephas was to her. She smiled softly. Trephas made her feel happy. He was a good friend.

Jolin smiled back.

"Well, what you said is a lot easier to hear from someone I just met than mean words, isn't it?"

She smiled and put down her book and put her feet on the floor. She felt no further need to be so withdrawn.

"Thank you."

Jolin said simply and smiled again. She then got an idea, and dug into her backpack. From it she withdrew a small red tin decorated with a blue ribbon. She blushed a bit as she offered the tin to the girl.

"I know you didn't say those things to get a reward... but I really want to thank you... and I can't eat them anyway. I'm allergic. My grandma made them, so they're really good..."

She hung her head, and she felt absolutely stupid. She felt as though she was shrinking and she thought to herself how stupid she was.

Lex recieved the tin carefully, handling it as though she'd just been given a glass figurine that would break easily. She opened it, looking inside, and grinning at the contents. Home made fudge. She'd most definately enjoy this. "Thank-you." she said, her gratitude comepletely honest. She loved fudge more than anything. However, aware that the girl was allergic to it, she placed the lid back on, and placed the tin gently down beside her. "I'm really going to enjoy this."

Then the girl hung her head. "Hey, I'm glad to accept it. Don't worry about it." she said, her words having the type of tone in them that anybody who really knew this girl would have used while lifting her chin. "I'm glad I could meet you." she added, completely honest. She hated seeing people like this. Even though she knew that sometimes she was even more pathetic.

Jolin blushed again.

"Oh... you're welcome. I'm glad you'll like it. She sat there for a moment, thinking of what to say. She was just really glad this girl had come along. Now everything that had happened that day didn't seem so bad.

"I'm glad to meet you too. You really healped a lot." she said with a smile.

Lex grinned. "I'm glad I helped." she pondered for a moment, deciding that she really wanted a piece of fudge. "You know what, I'm feeling snacky. You want anything?" she questioned, planning on floating it to them. She hoped that she wouldn't make the girl feel uncomfortable, but she knew it was bad manners to eat infront of someone if they couldn't eat too.

She was wondering what the girl's powers were, but didn't ask just yet, since the girl was probably having a tough time because of them. While she wouldn't be unkind to the girl about them, and probably be more accepting than anyone, she didn't want to raise anything that would make the girl feel as though she needed to withdraw.

The question bounced around inside her mind for a couple seconds.

"Thank you" she started "but I..." she was interrupted by the sound of her stomach growling. She let out a small laugh and than thought about it a bit longer.

"I think I'd like an apple... if you could manage it. If you can't it's fine." she answered.

Something popped into Jolin's mind. She realized the girl was probably wondering what powers Jolin had. Jolin considered saying something to the girl to ensure her she didn't mind questions, but decided not to in case the girl really had no intention of asking. She wasn't psychic after all.

Lex almost laughed when Jolin said 'if she couldn't handle it it was fine. But she managed to keep a comepletely straight face. "Don't worry. I can manage." she spoke, and even as she spoke, the apple was floating out of the cafeteria, and down the halls, probably getting weird looks.

After a minute, it floated into the lounge, and over to Jolin. "There you go. An apple." she smiled cheerfully, holding the apple in the air until the girl took it. Deciding to ask the girl, she cocked her head to the side. "So, obviously, I'm a telekinetic.. What are your powers?" she asked easily, in a 'hows the weather' tone, opening the tin, and popping a piece of fudge in her mouth. She was right. The fudge was delicious, and she allowed it to melt in her mouth, enjoying it immensly.
