Raphael nodded along, sipping at his beer. Angelo would see him smirking at that talk of barking up trees.

"You're right. That would make him one dumb son of a bitch. I've had to deal with enough idiots that it wouldn't surprise me, though, but if you think he's smarter than that I'll take your word for it. He and his boss are going to need more investigating anyway."

But so would Nick. Raph thought about this fact, and it filled him with dread. He knew, in general, what Angelo was getting at: he thought Nick was dirty. And Raphael didn't want to believe it. He wanted to be able to trust his coworkers more than that.

"Alright..." The werewolf let out the breath that he didn't know he was holding. "So. What are we supposed to do about Nick? It can't be as easy as asking someone to launch an investigation, if you wanted to talk about it in secret over here."

Angelo had concerns. He had big concerns. And those concerns more or less boiled down to what if it's not just Nick?

"Bodyguard's going to try and pull the tape for me. If he's got the tape, I can go straight to internal affairs. Nail him to the wall with it, and figure out who he's connected to after. But I've got some other concerns."

Angelo reached out, tapping the phone.

"Where'd he get this? I want to check evidence lockup, make sure the phones are all accounted for. I've got my own notes on how many we grabbed, so I want to make sure this isn't one of the ones from the evidence locker."

There was no symbol on the back, but that didn't mean anything. "While I'm there, I can check and see if they figured out what the phones were. No SIM cards, so they're not using them for calls. They've gotta have some kind of data or magic or something on them. Phones would make good keys. Innocuous, since no one would raise an eyebrow at someone holding a phone in their hand."

That was his bet. Keys to access the stuff.

"And honestly? Other than that I'm all ears. Whatever suggestions you've got, I'll take. I knew I could trust you because, being blunt, if you were dirty, Nick wouldn't have had to come ask me about what we'd found. He'd have just asked you and avoided me entirely. Same works vice versa. You know I'm not dirty because Nick wouldn't have come to feel me up if I was."

Angelo rolled his eyes at that.

Raphael guessed he could appreciate that he was beyond Angelo's suspicion. But now that the door was open for these kinds of thoughts - what if Angelo was the dirty cop and Nick wasn't? This could all be part of a plan to tie Nick up. He'd have to stay on his toes, think critically about anything Angelo told him to do here.

Was this what it felt like being in a spy movie? Being suspicious of everyone you used to think you could trust? This sucked. At least his girlfriend wasn't doing anything suspicious at the end of the day.

Dirty Angelo or no, Raph had to go along with this.

"If that phone's from lockup, he would've had to take the logo off before handing it to her. It might just be the same model of phone, but in that case..." he gave it a thoughtful look. "so, while you look into the evidence locker, I'll see who sells actual phones that look like this. If anyone does. Might shop around some magical item stores too; a lot of those places like to disguise their magic stuff as Narrow tech. Though... if you got caught with one of these in the Narrow, they might think you're a time traveller from the mid 2000s."

He took a couple pictures of the phone with his own. That would help the search.

"And if you need my nose for anything, call me up."

Angelo nodded along at Raphael's plan. He hadn't heard about them doing anything, but it made sense. The phones could be keys to their base, maybe. Something that wouldn't super stick out, but was distinct enough to not get mixed up with someone's real phone.

The whole thing was very, very extra.

"I'll let you know if I do. I'm hoping that bodyguard gets the tape and makes this whole thing really, really easy. If he does, and he's got a tape of Nick getting up in their case... quick and easy. Walk into internal affairs, drop the tape, and then they can take him apart and figure out who he's been working with. Even if they only get him, that's still one... what, senior detective? One dirty senior detective out of the running."

And any dirty cop gone was a big step up for Angelo.
