Sam was bored out of his mind. Since he was on a parole of sorts, he couldn't really stir up much trouble. There wasn't much for him to do here. He's not allowed to fight. He's not allowed to steal things. He's not allowed to stir up any trouble. Most of the time he just runs around the campus because he wasn't even allowed into town without supervision. He hated it. At least it was better than juvie. That was something he constantly had to remind himself of, whenever he felt like complaining about his current situation, whenever he felt compelled to just start a fight.
It was better to be here than anywhere else.
Right now, though, chaos was happening in all directions. He could hear everything. There were monsters here. The bonfire where you could see the dead became a monster invasion. Everybody was preoccupied with something - like surviving, for example. Nobody left to pay attention to him. Sure, maybe he'd get into trouble later, but he could just say it's in self-defense, right? And plus, it wasn't going to hurt anybody if he just went out to the forest, armed with his cane and one of those training weapons they had scattered around in the power classrooms. He was going to go hunt some monsters.
Now, in the middle of the forest, he wasn't very sure. The tinge of blood was in the air, blood, and smoke, but under that something more sinister than the usual dampness of the forest. Something that didn't belong there. Interdimensional alright. Nothing was near him, but maybe these monsters didn't make any sound, in which case he was royally screwed. He kept his right hand tight around the handle of his cane, his left hand against the bark of an elm tree. He sniffed the air. Nothing near him.
Then there was a series of footsteps, distinctly not human, and he was in trouble.
