It didn't make sense. By no standard was any sense made. When he'd heard Mal might be in trouble, his first thought had been oh no Mal, and then he'd remembered that Mal was a million year old war goddess who didn't need no man to save her, and had the thought oh no, whoever's threatening Mal.

Then he'd remembered that people lived with Mal, and his brain had swapped to oh no, Chloe. And then oh no, Amber. And then oh right, that irritating little kid she lives with.

And only then, once he'd gone down the entire list, had he remembered Dalia.

He hadn't cared about her. He hadn't felt concern. And considering that he was literally dating her mother, that was weird. He recognized it as weird. He'd always liked Dalia before, hadn't he? They had good banter. So why didn't he give a shit about her now?

Jackal had given Mal some warning, but she didn't seem to have any strong feelings about it, and now Jackal was caught in is that weird or am I just reading into things too much? as he knocked on Dalia's door, leaning himself up against the frame.

Dalia was strung up on her hammock in her room, frayed as it was from months of not being maintained. But what could she do? She couldn't make silk anymore. And she couldn't ask Amber for any, because for some reason things weren't good between them anymore.

Things were'nt good between Dalia and anyone anymore. And she couldn't figure out why. But regardless of the reasons, she had cried herself to sleep more times in the past few weeks than she ever had before. When Mama and Phaedra and Jax had left hadn't been as bad. Because at least those times she had support. Now she felt completely alone.

The knock at the door startled her, but she didn't move from her spot. "Yeah, come in I guess," she said as she turned in her hammock to face the door. She was bundled up in a hoodie and a blanket, like a small sad cocoon. When she saw that it was Jackal, she kind of sat up for a moment but settled back down. His threads were all but gone. Just like everybody else's.

Oh jeez. She just looked... well, she looked kinda of pathetic. Like the world's saddest and least appetizing and burrito. She looked... broken? Jackal had seen a lot of broken people in his life, and that was the kind of vibe she was giving. Like whatever hope she had was gone.

What the fuck?

The whole situation was bizarre. Why hadn't Mal noticed? Why hadn't Mal cared?

God, it was going to be a mess, and he walked right on over, intending to sit on the hammock, and then took one good look at it and decided the damn thing was going to snap under his weight if he did.

Scratch that. He'd stand.

"Alright, I'm not good at the whole... beating around the bush stuff," he said. "So I'm not going to bother." Should he have? Should he have cared enough to try and ease it in?

"Something's... fucky about you. And I want to know what." Okay, no, he wasn't that much of a dick, dial it back. "Something's fucky around you, to be clear."
