This was… not good.

For the past few days, something was going wrong with Loralei’s form. Normally, she appeared just as a regular person, minus her silver skin. But lately her facade was cracking, revealing what she truly was- just a figure made of smoke.

Being a Djinn, her soul was extracted from her mortal body and tied to a lamp- or in this case, her teapot- and the being people associated with her was a feisty young woman. Last week however, that began to change. She’d be holding a cup and it would fall through her hand and, upon inspection, she could see right through it. She would be walking one place and all the sudden teleport a few feet ahead. Her entire body felt like that sensation when your foot falls asleep. And, since that’s not a normal occurrence, something was definitely up.

Though she was in school to be a nurse, she couldn’t say she was very fond of being on the receiving end of a hospital visit. She hadn’t needed to see a doctor here since… Well, her daughter was born. Luckily, she was able to keep herself together long enough to prevent her daughter from seeing that something was wrong. She didn’t want to concern anybody, so, contrary to her stubborn behavior, she almost immediately scheduled an appointment with a supernatural specialist.

She was sitting in the waiting room, the edges of her silhouette flickering in the wind of the ceiling fan. On her lap, just stable enough to provide a solid resting surface, was her little silver teapot. Her wavering fingers traced over the fine engravings and pretty aquamarine and diamond stones. She hadn’t honestly seen this thing in forever- there was no need to keep it on her, now that she had found someone to bind herself to. But looking at it, it was both a symbol of independence and a simple of her imprisonment. She was a genie. This was her vessel, her looming threat had she not found anyone to serve. She hated that word, but that’s what it was. She may be independent in her heart but her soul said otherwise. Perhaps then, this condition was her punishment for finding a loophole. She really, really hoped not.

Her eyes were fixated on her teapot as she waited in the room, only one other person present. Her name was to be called soon. Hopefully, she wouldn’t have to go back home shit out of luck, or, even worse, not go home at all.

Thiul's knowledge and skill were being thoroughly put into use in Manta Carlos' central hospital. Her high intelligence made it possible for her to be highly proficient in many areas of medicine, and she was on stand-by with surgery and internal diseases and magical ailments and other wards. Naturally not all at the same time, Thiul had a schedule with which she rotated, depending on which area was understaffed and needed specialists. And this week Thiul was one of the doctors at the clinic for illnesses or diseases of magical origin. It was the area Thiul was still partly learning, but she had a license for dealing with this area of medicine.

Thiul looked at her appointment book, the next patient was Loralei V. Bateman. Based on the name Thiul could not imagine what kind of person she was. But there was no need for that in the first place, since the woman was waiting just behind that door. Thiul sighed a bit and stood up, forming her ice cane instinctively. But just after a moment she made it evaporate, there was no need for that anymore. Her legs were healed. And just that thought made Huilu smile for a split second, before taking on her professional face and opening the door to the waiting room.

"Loralei V. Bateman?"
Thiul called out, and when the woman would make herself known Thiul would look at her with neutral eyes. Outside she was neutral, of course, but inside Thiul was already making a medical assessment of this person. Was her form supposed to be unstable like that?
"Come in."
Thiul said, and dodged back inside the room. It was quite the basic looking room for medical appointments, not that big, there was a desk with a computer, an armchair in the corner and a normal chair in front of the desk, which Thiul now pulled out for Loralei.
"Sit down please."
Thiul said, and sat behind her desk in her computer chair. And she opened this woman's file on the computer.
"I'm Thiul Rukt'In, I will be handling your appointment today. Do you have any auras, glamours or other such conditions that could possibly affect my assessment?"
This was a question that was always asked on this island, since there were many things people could not or did not want to voice when reserving an appointment.

Loralei V. Bateman?

She looked up from where the source of her name came from. There in the doorway stood who she assumed was her doctor for the day. She had gotten good reviews online, so that was promising at least.

"Yeah, that’s me." She said almost growling, standing up. Even that was a bit of an effort. She felt as though there was a possibility she just might fall through the floor. Nevertheless however, she followed her into the back room.

Slowly, she sat in the seat, brushing her hair from her face, which ended up whipping in her hand. Great. "Sorry for not observing your no smoking policy." She cracked with the lame joke. That was how she handled the tough stuff, though.

When faced with a serious question however, she straightened back up. "No and no.What you’re seeing now is what you get." Though, she figured she ought to bring this up now. She held up her teapot. "Except this here is what binds my physical form to reality. So I’m just basically a projection of a person. Usually I’m a bit… More solid, though."

The woman seemed like a reasonable person, or at least that was what Thiul was hoping for. She could get intimidating when she was trying to deal with more difficult patients and that was where her bad reviews came from. Thiul did try and crack a small smile when Loralei joked, even though Thiul didn't think it was a particularly funny joke.
"The kind of smoking we condemn is the kind that is bad for health. So you're safe."

Thiul nodded when Loralei confirmed she had no auras or such, and she added to the woman's file. And as Loralei explained about the teapot she was holding Thiul listened carefully, filing everything away in her mind, and nodded along.
"I see. That is where we move on to your species, and what kind of problems you have with your health. Is it related to your form not being as solid as normal?"
Huilu suspected this woman was either some form of kami or spirit that was bound, or haunting, an object, or she was a djinn. Either way Huilu's fingers rested on the keyboard, ready to type in Loralei's species and ailment.

The doctor was friendly enough. She appreciated that, she had been to people before that scolded her for somehow being at fault for whatever ailed her. Luckily, this wasn’t the case.

When she asked for her species, she spoke again. "Yeah. This has to do I assume with my species. I’m a djinn. Or genie. My physical form is just a projection that comes from this here teapot." She held it up, in case she needed to inspect it. "Usually, genies serve people for a handful of days or weeks until our three wishes run out. Then we return here, until the next person to serve comes along demanding all their hopes and dreams."

She looked down, biting her lip. "...I haven’t been back in for awhile, though."

Thiul's prediction was accurate, the woman was a djinn, or genie as most people called them. Wish granter spirits that were dependent on having a master to serve. Thiul wasn't as familiar with them as she was say with dragons, draconic creatures or shifters, but she had general knowledge and that was why she had her files on the computer. Which she now opened. But before Thiul started forming any kind of diagnosis or conducting a check-up she needed all the facts.

"For how long have you not been inside your vessel?"
That would give Thiul a good picture of what might be wrong with Loralei. Like she said, after fulfilling their purpose a djinn returned to their vessel until the next person came and used the djinn's abilities. Thiul also wished to know if Loralei even had a master currently, and if she didn't what kind of loophole had she used to remain outside her vessel. But this came first.

Of course, the inevitable question came- how long had she been out of her vessel.

"Hmmm..." She cupped her chin under her hand, thinking. As a genie, she had a rule- she could not wander too long outside of her vessel without a master. If she couldn’t find one, she would be forcibly returned to her vessel, only to be released by someone rubbing it. And that could take… ages.

She never wanted it to come to that.

"Well, I definitely haven’t been since I married… And after my daughter was born… So at least..." She looked up, thinking while counting the years on her fingers. "Six. It’s been six years."

"Six years..."
Thiul said thoughtfully, and wrote that down to Loralei's file. That was a lot longer than Thiul had thought. Perhaps Loralei herself wasn't aware of it but that wasn't healthy for a spirit such as her. There was a reason why djinns had vessels, and it wasn't just to keep them contained.
Now Thiul opened the notes and files on djinns on her computer, and though she had a suspicion of what this might be she still double checked.
"May I?"
Thiul asked, gesturing to the teapot, wanting to examine it. And when Loralei would hand her the vessel Thiul would inspect it carefully, checking for any damage or cracks. She found none that could've cause Loralei to be in such a state.

"You are married, with one child. Is your husband your current master?"
Thiul asked. That would work as a good loophole, to have someone you're in a relationship with have your master. They would want you around and thus not use their wishes and cause you to return to your vessel. After Loralei would answer Thiul would simply nod and then make eye contact with the woman, her expression serious.
"I may know what is causing you to be in this state. I don't know if you're aware of this, but it puts a strain on a djinn when they remain outside their vessel for too long. Your vessel is your physical form, and for you to remain outside of it isn't your natural state of being. So what's causing this could be the fact that you haven't returned to your vessel for an extended period of time. It's nothing serious, and can be fixed quite simply by returning inside your vessel, and remaining there for a few days. And then you must keep doing that for few hours even few days, and you should go back to normal."

((Tell me if I said something wrong or something about that diagnosis is off, I'll fix it.))

When she asked for her teapot, she simply handed it over. She watched with bated breath, crossing her legs as her edges flickered a bit more once again. In a sense, she already knew what she was going to be told. The answer was so simple, yet so complicated.

"Yes. That’s right. We made an agreement years ago so I wouldn’t have to keep searching for someone to serve." She said simply, looking at her as she assessed her situation. The doctor was knowledgeable, that much was obvious. She came to a solution rather quickly, more or less to Loralei’s dismay.

It’s what she suspected and feared. She was fading out, and it absolutely was due to her going against her natural order. But just taking the days to heal herself… That was risky.

"I was afraid you’d say that." She sighed, going to rest her head on her hand before her elbow went straight through the armrest. She really was getting worse. "I guess it’s just I’ve been going nonstop and I just don’t think I can take the time off for myself like that." She looked at her, her normally aloof cyan eyes showing a bit of worry. "And I haven’t been back in so long. What if I can’t get back out? What if I’ve done permanent damage? What if I never can turn back to my usual form? Will I disappear? I-" Her flurried speech caused her image to ripple even more, her body becoming translucent. The office ventilation was working against her as it distorted her form even more. "When genies don’t continuously cycle through masters, they are forcibly put into their lamp until a brand new person comes by. Is there a risk that might happen?"

So Loralei had had her own suspicions. That wasn't surprising, surely she had some kind of understanding of her own kind and how they functioned. But when Loralei very clearly started panicking Thiul felt uncomfortable, although outside she remained professional and calm. Thiul had never excelled in psychology, not because she didn't understand the mind, but because she wasn't good at handling the patients themselves. But naturally there were times like this when the patient received bad or unpleasant news and began panicking, and during these occasions Thiul simply stated the facts. And Loralei's situation wasn't that grave.

"Please calm yourself, Mrs. Bateman, I will explain the situation to you."
Thiul said, lifting her hand in a motion that said "calm down". She hoped, that the way how she remained cool and steady would help Loralei become more so as well.
"When it comes to the possibility of you remaining in your vessel, that is indeed a possibility. The chances are low due to you technically having a master currently, but it's still possible. But may I suggest an alternative solution?"
Thiul leaned forward a bit, setting both her hands on the table, ready to present the solution that she had come up with.
"If you wish I suggest you temporarily switch masters, preferably to someone you can trust and know won't take advantage of you, and then your husband can become your master again, unless you have unique restrictions about the same person being your master multiple times. This way your body would be, in a way, reset and I'm quite possibly your ailment wouldn't renew in several years. But even if you do this I suggest returning to your vessel for few hours once in a while, for your own safety and health."

((Again, if something is wrong or put in a wrong way please tell me and I'll fix it))
