It was the night of June 8th. Aranea was trying to relax after a difficult day at work, when she bolted upright in her seat, eyes wide.

"Oh, fuck!" she said into her empty apartment. She forgot to do anything about Sidney's birthday. It was one of those days in the first week of June, and she definitely didn't remember which day, but she knew she'd missed it. Poor girl.

The next day Aranea took some time out to go shopping for a gift. She happened to find a pair of headphones that seemed like the ones Sidney used to use all the time, and that seemed like a nice enough gift. A return to normalcy, in a way. She hoped. Soon she had it bought, bagged, and ready to present as a gift.

By the time she had that and a birthday card, she knew classes would be over. So she stood outside the store and dialed her number. "Hey, Sidney, it's Aranea! Happy belated birthday! Do you want to do something to celebrate while I'm in town?"

Sidney had attended her classes. She didn’t learn much of anything but at least she was there. Her last class went as it always did. She zoned out about fifteen minutes in and then had no clue what the teacher was talking about when she started paying attention again. The class went on for what seemed like a lifetime before it finally ended and Sid managed to leave. With that, she was done school for the day. Hallelujah.

She headed to her locker, slung her bag around her arm and headed out, waving to a few people who she somewhat knew as she made her way out.

She was heading back to her dorm room when she got the call. She picked it up casually, but took a moment to react when Aranea finally wished her happy birthday.

It was too late. She’d already had the worst birthday of her entire life. A happy belated birthday didn’t fix any of that now. The contrast between this year and the last had hit her hard that day and now it was starting to hit her again. She put a hand over the phone speaker and took a deep breath. This wasn’t a good time for that.

She released her hand and put the phone back to her ear. “Aw, thanks!” Her tone gave no sense of how she was feeling. She just sounded happy. “I just finished school so I’m pretty much free for the rest of the day. Have anything in mind?”

"How about dinner? We could go to The Saucer and get fancy-drunk."

That was one of those nicer restaurants on the island, and they wouldn't have to make reservations. Aranea remembered them going together for one of their birthdays at their parents' expense and being surprised with how good the food was. Aranea also ordered a really fancy espresso drink from there and claimed that she was getting 'fancy-drunk,' which was better than the standard kind of drunk because it was classy.

Aranea would definitely give Sid a couple of fancy drinks if she wanted them. As long as neither of them got too drunk. That could look bad.

Before the mention of The Saucer, Sid sounded happy but her expression hadn’t really reflected it. But afterwards, she wore a faint smile. “Well, I don’t really have the funding for that last I checked. This a dinner on you situation?”

While she certainly was still a bit upset about it, she had to admit that going to a place and hanging out like old times would be nice. It had been far too long since the last time she’d gotten to do something like that. Nowadays she rarely just hung out with one person. Perhaps a little one on one time with Nea was just what she needed to get her spirits back up.

"I'm almost offended you asked that," Aranea said. "Imagine me inviting you to a fancy dinner in your honor and making you pay for it. I demand an apology, in the form of you letting me pay for your fancy dinner."

Aranea smiled a little. For a moment, she felt like a teenager again.

"You know. If you want. I have the next couple of evenings free."

With that, her faint smile turned into a real one. “I’ll have to think about it,” She didn’t say anything for about three more seconds before continuing. “Yeah, okay, I guess I could do that for ya.”

Then the mention of Aranea having the next couple of evenings free came up. Without really thinking and as soon as she finished speaking, Sid just blurted out “Yes.”

“I mean, if you’re not doing anything I’d love to catch up with ya some more. Spend a little time together like old times.” It still felt weird calling it old times. It shouldn’t have been that. They should have still been in the good old days.

"Yeah. Like old times." Aranea smiled at that a little.

They discussed logistics for a little while, eventually settling on meeting at the restaurant itself at dinnertime before the call ended.

Once the call was over, Aranea sighed. She remembered how strong her feelings for Sid had been, and she reflected, for a minute, on how unfair it was to have that taken away from them. She had wanted to marry Sid, back then. How could things have gone differently?

******** ******** ********

Aranea was there 5 minutes early, in her full arachne form, Sidney's gift bag hanging off of one of her legs. There was a part of her that was anxious and self-conscious, echoes of when they were young and in love. She couldn't shake the feeling that she was making a mistake by being here.

When the call ended, Sid snapped her flip phone shut and carried on towards her dorm. She had mixed feelings to say the least but at the core of it she was just glad to get a chance to see Aranea again.

At her dorm, she spent some time picking out what to wear. She didn’t really own anything fancy enough for where they were going, but it didn’t really bother her. She just threw on some black pants and a black and gray striped shirt. Good enough.

About a minute after the agreed time, the moth girl made an appearance at the restaurant. It didn’t take long for her to spot Aranea and make her way over. She started with a wave but frankly it just wasn’t enough. She kept a short distance between them for a second longer before going in for a hug.

With all four arms wrapped around her ex and her face out of view, Sid frowned and spoke quietly. “it’s good to see you again.” She held the hug for an almost awkward amount of time, realizing that it still wasn’t enough, she wanted a kiss.

All that Sidney would get at that point was a hug. Aranea was enthusiastic about it at least. "Same here, Sid."

And then, after a few seconds of hugging, she started playing with the fluff around Sid's neck a little bit, sort of like she used to. The moment Aranea touched it, the memories started flooding in again. She remembered how she used to bury her face in it, and she restrained herself from doing so now.

"You know, I've really missed you and your fluff. Even if I didn't... realize it, I guess." It was hard to explain what the Veil had done to her memories, and the timeline, after DCA was erased from it.

And once the hug ended, it all felt even more awkward. Truth be told she still really didn't know how to act around Sidney anymore. It would feel so comfortable to just slip back into acting the way they used to together - but that didn't seem right.

"So! Like I said on the phone, this is all on me. Order whatever you want."

When the hug finished, Sidney’s frown disappeared, replaced by a brief look of uncertainty. This was followed quickly by her usual grin and joining Aranea in attempting to break the awkwardness. “Whatever I want, eh? You’re gonna regret that.”

She quietly snickered as they made their way inside and were seated. Before long, she’d have a fancy menu in one of her hands and have begun browsing. The menu looked different and had a couple new options as well as several that were missing. “These things sure look different than before.” She still didn’t even have a good grasp on what half the items on the menu even were, but she could still tell.

“What’re you gonna get?” She figured knowing what Aranea was getting could help her with her own decision.
