The night was dark, the blackness tempered only by the small patch of light provided by the flickering fire. It wasn't a large fire, and its flickering light went only a small way around it, but it was a small escape from the moonless night. Not that Everto needed to escape the night. He sat at the edge of the firelight, half in shadow, half in light. His cold grey eyes reflected the flames, giving him a slightly demonic appearance. He wasn't afraid of the night, nor of the creatures that dwelt within it. Rather, he had ventured into the 'forbidden' area in an attempt at finding the night. He had lit the fire because he had no wish to be disturbed by the night creatures that frequented the area. He had to think.
The flames danced, reddish tongues of light flitting in and out of his vision, melding with one another and splitting apart. He saw them not. Lost deep within the solitude of his mind, Everto was only dimly aware of his surroundings. His mind was a turmoil of thoughts and feelings, tempered with the desire to find who he truly was. The halfvampire youth pulled his black jacket tighter around him. It was cold, though he barely noticed. He was torn between his need to protect her, the one whom he loved but had already failed so many times, and the desire to find his family. No doubt many of the students, particularly ones who had known him before, thought him suspicious. He had had a reputation for wanting the Academy burnt before he had left - he had been reading the "How To Burn Down Your School And Not Get Caught" series then - and he had left right before the attack.
Sighing, Everto dragged himself back to the present. Flicking his black hair away from his eyes, he glanced around. He was not supposed to be here, he knew, but since when had he cared about Academy rules? Cince when had he cared about any rules? Stretching his legs, he faded into the shadows at the sound of something behind him. Turning silently, he saw that it was just an animal. At he lifed his hand away from his body, Everto's hand became engulfed in flame, bluishly similiar to the campfire but a metre away. it cast a cold light over his face, outlining his features. Seeing the animal scurry away in fright, Everto allowed the flames surrounding his hand to die. He couldn't be bothered scaring it any further. Flopping back onto the log he had been slouched upon, he stared once more into the flames.
