Caitlin was walking along the beach. The waves were crashing up against her, but she didn't mind. She liked it here. But she missed how things had been. Just her and her dad; at home in Oregon. But he felt the need to remarry and as a result she was moved here. Away from her family, home, and friends. A wave of homesickness stronger than the waves of the ocean overtook her. She fell to the ground with deep sobs, wishing there was someone she could talk to.

Judas floated over the sand a few feet away, peering curiously at her.
"You cry for lost memories? Things lost in your past perhaps? All who come to the academy lose something in return. Being with their family, their home, their lives. As for me, I lost my soul. But do not cry, the thread of human hope is woven with the flax of sorrow."
His eyes seemed heavy and tired.

Caitlin looked up. She was suprised at the fact that Judas was the one talking to her. "I cry for many things." she said wiping her eyes. "My mom, my little brother, died. My father, when he remarried. My home and friends, when I came here." Caitlin had lost much more than that, but she didn't want anyone to know. "What did you lose?" Caitlin asked, staring into his eyes.

Judas' eyes were hollow and dead, a smile dancing across his face.
"I lost everything, including my soul. Although it doesn't matter much anymore, it actually makes me laugh a lot when I think about all the death and loss. There's nothing better than laughter and desperation. Dwell not on your loss, but on what you have. Your life, your soul, your heart, your future."
He blinked slowly.

Judas smiled.
"So you recognize the present tense of it? Hmph. My powers are my curse. Whenever I use them, they take a little bit of my life, of my soul, away. And I never have used them for good. Ask my parents about that in hell."
He chuckled.

"There is nothing left to explain. I have nothing left, nihil. My powers are what did that to me, and they still stay with me, sucking up every bit of energy and soul until the day I die. It's all quite irrelevant anyway. Who cares."
He smiled.
"Apathy is the key to happiness, my dear."
