"Hello, sir, would you like to buy this seashell...?"
In a tiny voice, a tall young lady with flowing red, red hair presented a delicate mother-of-pearl necklace to the sunburned man. He waved his hand to signify 'no' and walked away.
Nerina had many other things she wanted to sell. She adjusted her large straw hat and frowned. At her feet was a large hessian cloth that looked liked it used to hold coffee beans. Now they were displaying jewellery that was made from objects in the sea. They were made from tiny starfish, shells, sea glass, coral and even pearl. She would sometimes sell the nice big white pearls to the company in the island's big city for a better sum of money. They only wanted ones that were big, even and symmetrical, not the ones that looked like the back of her teeth.
She would not give up, she decided. She still had to pay for this month's rent. Also, she wanted to give the old man in the music store the money for the harp he gave her. Even though it was a large sum. She couldn't think about raising enough money to pay for school facilities just yet. She wouldn't know if she would be accepted. She might even be too old! How old was she again? She couldn't remember.
She saw two girls on the pier, and she smiled at them and waved a hand shyly. She spoke with an accent that sounded cheerful and sunny, despite the girl's introverted nature. She didn't pronounce her 'r's when they were on the ends of words.
"Hello, I'm selling shell jewelry and other things. It's not so expensive. Please have a look."
