Ulrich couldn't help but chuckle at that. "Yes, I'm aware. I have my own guards in the water, and their contract is to not go on land." In other words, Nicolas was the only 'guard' of any sort he could have when he was on the surface. Under the water, however, the old laws applied. He had his guards, his battalions, his own loyal followers... Few would dare screw around with him while he was underwater.

As for the news... "No. I just got out of the water." Human news didn't often interest him, and though sometimes the tv droned in the background as he went about his tasks in the office, he wasn't listening. His duties were in the sea, and his only responsibility on land was Luca, technically.

"What was it?" Because Nicolas knew enough to know what to bring up. If it was important, then he probably would.

Nicolas busied himself with packing away the First Aid kit as he spoke. "Apparently there was an incident on the island during valentine's day. Someone drugged the water, and anyone who drank it ended up head over heels with love and lust." In truth, it didn't totally make sense to Nicolas. Supposedly it was supposed to be the first person you saw - only he didn't think Ulrich had been the first person. Had he really gotten all the way back home without looking at anyone else?

He supposed it really didn't matter.

At first, it didn't click. Ulrich paused, wondering for a split second why in the world that would be important to him. He didn't drink the water from the island; hell, if he needed it, he'd just take a dip and be ready to go.

A second later it hit him, and he couldn't help a very vague, mischievous smile as Nicolas packed away the first aid supplies. "Huh..." He thought about it a second more, rolling the thought over in his head. "Wonder if I can get in contact with whoever did it and get a little more off them."

After all, Nicolas had been very pleasing that night. And he even dropped... What was it, his real name? Miklos? He hadn't been aware of that before, but he decided to not bring it up now.

Whatever answer Nicolas had been expecting, it wasn't that. Nicolas let out a choked noise, turning to glare at Ulrich.

"Are you implying you're just going to drug me?" He snapped back, looking downright irritated at the very thought of it. Ulrich hadn't actually said quite that, but as far as Nicolas was concerned, he might as well have. "The point -" Because obviously Ulrich wasn't going to get it unless he spelt it right out for him. "Was that it wasn't me doing it. I was drugged."

He stood, hefting the first aid kit and returning it to his room, sliding it into position under his bed.

The only answer he gave to the accusation was a sly grin, rolling his shoulder before checking the bandages on his upper arm. Yeah, that would be fine. He'd live to see another day, and he'd be sure to check up on Luca as soon as he was able to.

"Are you sure about that?" He called out after him, slowly getting to his feet. Ulrich was slightly wobbly from the exhaustion; it took so much energy to turn from a human to a giant sea monster back to a human. He followed Nicolas inside, peering into his bedroom and more or less leaning in the doorway, blocking off his exit.

"I say we try again. Just to make sure." Because Nicolas had been more than agreeable when he was apparently drugged. In fact, he was downright pleasant to be around then, all hot and flustered with his face in the sheets.

Ulrich literally couldn't go ten seconds without doing something to piss him off, could he? He got up from the floor, turning back around only to find Ulrich very obviously standing in the doorway, blocking him off.

"No. I have no idea why you think I'd actually like you. In case you forgot, you're directly responsible for this." He snapped, gesturing to where his left arm should have been. "You're not a human, you have totally different morals, and you're my boss, in case you forgot."

Nicolas had a pretty hard line about messing around on the job, but he was also used to much shorter jobs. A 'long' job would be a month, but whatever this thing with Ulrich was seemed like it was going to be looking at years. Sure, Ulrich paid him well, but it was still a job, and Nicolas was starting to feel like he'd forgotten that.

Ulrich never really took 'no' for an answer. He was a king, and a somewhat beloved one at that. Very few would even think about turning him down, and he was generally smooth talking enough to get what he wanted. Among his own kind, he was strong enough to wrestle most of the things he wanted from underneath his rivals' claws.

That self assured look remained on his face. "Last I checked, I was paying you quite enough to make up for it." As for being his boss... Well, what did that have to do with anything. "I don't see how being your boss would stop you, though." Having sex with your underlings was a fairly common thing where he came from.

It was much too bad that Nicolas looked adorable when he was squirming on the spot, or else Ulrich wouldn't have had so much fun just teasing him.

He genuinely couldn't even tell if it was a culture issue, or an Ulrich issue. It could have really gone either way.

"Because it's considered extremely unprofessional to do so." He snapped. "There's too much of a power difference." Which applied just as much for them in general. Ulrich could kill him easily. He could snap his neck, he could bite him, he could order him murdered... and all that was assuming he stayed in human form. In his real form, it wasn't even comparable.

He turned, heading over and starting to tidy his desk. Anything to keep from looking directly at Ulrich, who was still naked. "Weren't you supposed to be sitting down, recovering from a literal natural disaster?"

Ulrich could always use his power. He could always force Nicolas down if he wanted to. Or he could threaten to fire him, and he knew the man didn't have much to turn to and a whole lot more to lose if the king decided he was of no use anymore. As a king, Ulrich definitely understood differences in power.

But he hadn't reigned for so long because he exploited it. That wasn't how you nurtured loyalty, and that wasn't how you amassed devoted followers.

"They're only flesh wounds, but thank you for the concern." A small cut to his brow and arm did little to keep him down. He'd endured worse; in fact, he'd endured whole heads being chopped straight off.

"I suppose you know where to find me." He relented then, turning to leave back to his own room.

Nicolas let out a little snort at the mention of flesh wounds, but was surprised to see Ulrich turn away. So he wasn't going to hassle him that much, was he? He'd half expected for Ulrich to keep him there for ages, only it turned out he was far luckier.

He waited for Ulrich to be gone before he relaxed, double checking the first aid kit before getting back to work.
