A normal day, or at least as normal as a day in Starlight Academy could be. Class was ending, everyone was preparing to leave.

He rose from his desk, pulling his reading glasses off he hung them from the front of his shirt. The Shadow was grumbling in the back of his mind as usual and as usual James was grateful only he could hear him.

Now James wasn't a social butterfly, he was very friendly, but quiet and tended to be awkward with social things. That said, he wanted friends, he wanted to open up. So as he gathered his things he decided to talk to someone.

Among his classmates was a girl, around his age, Lorencia he believed her name was, he'd seen her during class, she seemed bubbily, the kind of person that sorta made people want to socialize. So once his things were gathered, he approached her, a calm but shy smile on his face. "Hello," he said trying to push his shyness aside and ignore the Shadow's complaints, "I don't know if we've..talked before.......I'm James Mortii."

Devias had left as soon as class ended since he had an appointment with another student and didn't want to keep them waiting. Lorencia on the other hand took her time packing up her stuff, waving goodbye to her classmates that passed by her desk with a large smile.

As she stood up to leave herself, somebody greeted her and introduced himself. Lorencia remembers everyone she meets, and this person was definitely not one she had met before, but she did notice him during class.

"Nice to meet you, James!" she chirped, fully extending an arm out to offer a handshake. "My name's Lorencia Hel'Sarie!" she nodded to herself. Lorencia had a wide smile and she gave him a giggle after she introduced herself.

He shook her hand, his smile brightening a bit, "good to meet you Lorencia," she was bubbily, James was already feeling a bit more willing to be social.

"Gods.....please tell me were not talking to this girl," the Shadow complained into his head. James quickly told the entity to behave. The Shadow just grunted and lowered it's complaints to grumblings, James would have a headache later on.

He mentality chuckled a bit at her giggle, he thought it was nice. "How long have you lived on the island?" he asked his nervousness melting away a bit as he talked. "I got here back in September," so much had happened sense then, it was still hard to imagine at times.

As he calmed, a single small shadow tentacle appeared on his shoulder and slowly swayed back and forth. "I've explored a bit if the island," he'd been wanting to explore more.

"Oh my cousin and I have been here since... erm... Uhm, January? Yeah, January!" Time keeping wasn't her strong point. She mentally counted the months between September and January to see how much time James had been in this place before she started. Four months! But going through December and early January, he must have seen the celebrations this place had! She was kind of jealous of that, but she knew she'll have time for those as well.

At the talk of exploration, her eyes brightened with excitement. "How far have you gotten?" she nearly blurted out. Lorencia had done some spelunking on her own, and sometimes with her cousin, but never strayed too far. Mostly because they made too many stops when Devias was documenting the wildlife.

But then, there was something peculiar on James' shoulder. With little regard for caution, she simply poked it a couple of times. "You have a tentacle on your shoulder?"

"Pretty far," he said, he only had a limited amount of daily use of his powers, but he took advantage of it when he could. "I......took a look in the forbidden forest," it had been an experience, and he had discovered something interesting.

Then, to his surprise, she poked the shadow tentacle, "W-why is she poking it?" the Shadow stated genuinely surprised and confused. James mentally laughed at it, "Don't laugh boy! Ask her what the hell she's doing."

"It's one of my powers," he looked a bit embarrassed, a he even blushed for a brief moment, "it tends to do that sometimes." The shadow tentacle twitched a bit at her poking but continued to sway back and forth.

Focusing he had the tentacle pick up and hold his bag. "It....can be useful," he said, relieved his powers were met with curiosity from her, some freaked out.

The forbidden forest? Oooh, that sounded exciting! She'd definitely want to go there! Just thinking about what she could find there just got her imagination running wild. Maybe some animal hybrids? A cult? A genetic monster from a failed experiment? Ancient ruins? The list goes on!

But as she listened to him explain that the tentacle was actually a part of his powers, the list only got longer. If someone had that power, it was possible that any monster in the forbidden forest would have the same! At least, that's what she expected, being raised in a world heavily packed with magical energies and nearly all the wildlife and plant life is able to use it.

"You've got to show me around the forbidden forest! Oh, and teach me how you control the tentacle like that. I know I won't be able to do something exactly like that, but I can mimic it!"

His smile brightened, "I'd love to show you around it," it wasn't a safe place, but he knew how to avoid the monsters. "We can go after school if you want," this was honestly very unexpected, but a nice surprise, "they have a lot of weird creatures there."

He tilted his head curiously, "I guess I could try and teach you," he said with a slightly nervous chuckle. "My shadow powers are connected to another being," the Shadow grumbled more, annoyed at the situation. "I'll show you how it all works though."

"Great!" she chirped happily as she pumped her arms in the air with perhaps a little too much energy behind it. But with the promise of meeting new and interesting creatures in a potentially lethal environment, her excitement was ready to burst forth from her chest.

Although things were getting better as well. Not only would her new buddy show her how he does the tentacle thing, but apparently that shadow thing was from another being itself! Two souls, one body, or is he just connected to it?! That was a rather intriguing thing to think about. "Do you still have classes after this?"

"No, I don't have any more classes," the tentacle continued to calmly sway back and for, "we can explore a bit if your free." He was excited to be able to do some exploring with a new friend.

The Shadow sighed, "this is pointless," it complained, "why do you want to talk to this girl?" The Shadow seemed to moved about, utterly annoyed yet also jealous about the situation, James ignored it.

"Don't know what we'll find," he adjusted the bag on his shoulder, "I saw a few weird creatures last time." He smiled softly, "we can drop our stuff off and head out."

"Sure, yeah! That'd be great!" she chirped up once again, not really hiding her excitement to any extent. Normally she would have brought her cousin along, but she didn't want to miss this opportunity, and Devias already had plans. Besides, now she'd be the one to show him some interesting things when the two of them get out.

"Alright! Let's go! Oh, are you dropping your things off at the dorms?" she asked. If both of them were going to the dorms, then there was no problem. If not, then perhaps they'd need to separate for a bit then meet up somewhere, like the gate or something.
