They liked these girls. They kept up with banter at least, and didn’t take them too seriously. Cyril could be a bit of an asshole if he wanted to.

Fortunately, the fun didn’t seem to be over yet. And at least it wasn’t going to be a long and potentially dangerous walk home. Cyril may have talked the big talk, but as far as prowess goes, he couldn’t really hold his own.

”Well alright then. We’ll go clock out and meet you out front.” Lyric said softly. With that, the two passed through the employee’s only door behind them, to get their stuff and get the hell out of there.

_____

A few moments later, the front door chimed, as the two exited the building and closed the door behind them. Their uniforms were replaced by street clothes, and they finally were facing them without the counter obstructing their lower half. Cyril stood with a naturally wider gate, to accommodate the weight of his brother, who sprouted out of the left side of his hip. Lyric latched onto him around his shoulder, relying on him for support. ”Thank god that’s over with. I swear they don’t pay us enough.” Cyril huffed, adjusting his coat collar. He looked at them, with a bit of a smirk. ”Let’s dip before someone tries to jump us.”

Bel and Azucena waited outside, chatting about nothing in particular, commenting on the ice cream and that it wasn't that bad. Though both girls definitely preferred ice cream from a place across town that specialized in the iced dairy treat.

When both boys appeared a few minutes later, now dressed in street clothes, uniforms gone, Bel greeted them.

"Okay, let's bounce. This part of town is not the best place to hang," she agreed. "You know, at times like this, I really wish I could just teleport," she admitted to them as she took a scoop of her iced treat.

"Oh, definitely," Azu nodded, "We could be anywhere in like this..." she said snapping her fingers.

"So, speaking of disappearing, how was work?" Bel asked with a smirk, quite curious about the whole after-school job thing.

She could say that again. While the boys typically avoided trouble, there were time where they could hear a fight break out outside, or rumors from coworkers that there was a robbery a few alleys away. They didn’t particularly like working this late, but fast food tended not to care about the needs or wishes of their employees.

Cyril huffed.”Honestly any power would be nice. Or at least something to hold our own against anyone that tries to jump us.” He said, a bit of saltyness teetering on the edge of his tone. They certainly got the short end of the stick, in more ways than one. ”But yeah, if I could teleport, you’d bet my lazy ass I wouldn’t be walking anywhere.” He joked, keeping up with the young women slightly behind them. The twins walked with a noticeable lag on their right leg, but it wasn’t much of an impairment to them.

When they were asked about their shift, Lyric finally piped up, his tone considerably more quiet than he was in his “customer service” voice. ”Oh, it was alright. It went pretty smoothly, honestly.”

Cyril interjected with a dry laugh. ”Smoothly? Is that what you’d call being yelled at by a werewolf soccer mom to see the manager because we wouldn’t accept her expired coupon?” He then looked at the two strangers. ”Yeah. This job’s not glamorous. People treat you like dirt but hey, at least we get paid for it.” He said, ”And it’s good spending money. Thank god the school covers mostly everything. We’d probably be on the streets if they didn’t.”

Bel flashed Cyril a sympathetic glance and just rolled her eyes at how rude people could be. "Soccer moms are the worst, no matter the species. I think it's the game itself that turns normally nice moms into harpies dressed as wendigos," she joked, her tone somewhat sarcastic.

As they chatted, Azu glanced at the twins questioningly, and a bit surprised. "You don't have any magic either?" she asked them very curiously. She hadn't met that many people her own age that were like herself. She was devoid of any magic abilities, or any that she knew of.

Cyril laughed, and Lyric joined with a quiet chuckle. ”Honestly. Like congrats, your seven year old scored his first goal. That doesn’t make you hot shit.” He said, though ironically being a bit sporty himself. Despite his body he did well athletically, and before he came to the island he had a supportive parent to take his goals seriously. But not as seriously as some as his customers.

Their train of thought however was interrupted by the fact that one of the girls didn’t have powers, just like them. ”Really? Well then, I guess we’re not as rare as a breed as we thought.” He said. He gestured down to his hip, where his shirt ended and Lyric’s began. ”Apparently this constitutes as being “special”,” He said dry, airquoting his apparent diagnosis, ”And we didn’t have anywhere else to go so they plopped us here. Turns out we’re too weird for public school but too vanilla for this place. It’s like being in limbo but hey, at least we’re not alone I guess.”

"Really," Azucena nodded and smiled at the fact that they were both rare "unmagical" breeds. "Not even a drop of magic. The only thing I can do well is drawing ... and that's not an ability that people generally oh and ahh over." she said with a shrug.

"Don't say that, Azu..." Bel said with a frown. "You are a great artist."

"Maybe, but compared to people that can make their pictures come alive. My art is boring," she said with another shrug.

Azu's gaze then followed Cyril's hand down to his hip where the two boys were attached. She didn't see anything weird or special about it. They were far from the strangest creatures or being she had ever met.

"Well, being vanilla here is still an achievement. I mean look at us, the fact we can't make people fall in love or tell one's future," here she glanced at Bel for emphasis, "creat fireballs or teleport anywhere, makes us special in a way,' she said... it was something she had come to believe and tell herself over the years. Something that made having no powers just a bit more tolerable.

This was an interesting revelation, that’s for sure. The twins weren’t used to people relating to them, or having much in common with anyone for that matter. Then again, they were definitely some of the more tame looking creatures that came here. That’s what made them so different, apparently.

Lyric piped up in a quiet voice. ”I’m sure your art is lovely. At least it isn’t Cyril’s here. You should have seen his last art project. It was a mess.” He laughed.

Cyril looked at him, squinting. Maybe it was a good thing that he was supposed to be the quiet one.

He then looked back at the normie girl, listening to what she had to say. Maybe she had a point. Powers were messy after all and took years to master. Perhaps it was for the best then, that they were average.

”Eh, still. You gotta admit it’d be cool.” He wasn’t one to crave feeling special. Hell, he spent most of his formative years feeling “special” among other humans. Those memories were a little bitter. ”This place definitely was a weird adjustment. Don’t know if you guys ever been to school off the island but man, talk about being a fish out of water.”

Lyric looked up, suddenly remembering something. ”Oh! I don’t think we got your names. You probably know by now, but I’m Lyric. This is my brother Cyril.”

Azucena grinned shyly when Lyric said that her artwork was lovely. She wasn't used to being praised for her drawings. She knew that her drawing ability wasn't bad, however, she always felt a bit inferior to others around her who could do magical stuff with their art.

"Having powers can be great, sometimes, depending on what they are," Bel admitted, "although, seeing the dead and hearing voices all the time like what happened when mine first appeared is not fun either. Plus the fact, that my powers start waning and disappear almost totally when Samhain comes around," she told them with a grimace.

"Sometimes I think my life would have been somewhat easier not having them," Bel confessed.

As they headed back to the school, Lyric pointed out that they didn't know their names while introducing himself and his brother, Cyril.

"Oh, that's right," Azu piped up, "I'm Azucena, although most people call me, Azu, and this is Bel, my new best friend," she said as Bel gave the boys a wave.

"It's actually Beltane, like the Celtic festival, but everyone just calls me, Bel," she explained with a smile.

Though the twins could relate to the normie one, it seemed that they were also in the presence of someone with formidable power. Or at least, throughout most of the year. The twins weren’t foreign to powers that waned in strength depending on the season. Maybe it was even worse then, having power sometimes and other times being just your average joe.

”That’s rough buddy.” Cyril remarked. It must have sucked to not have that sort of stability. But raising the dead though… That might be handy.

When they said their names, the boys nodded. Got it. Azu and Bel

”Well it’s nice to meet you.” Lyric said to them, looking to Bel. ”And Beltane, I’m familiar with that. I read up on pagan rituals once, and they’re really interesting. I assume you have powers related to the spring, right?”

Cyril slightly drifted off, paying more attention to remember how to get back. They crossed a road, lit only by street lights and a sliver of the moon. It was too quiet he felt. He was on alert.

”You know, I heard that there were ways to get powers, if you know who to talk to.” Cyril said, mentioning this due to the uncertainty of safety. ”Maybe that wouldn’t be a bad idea.”

Lyric halted has conversation to look at him, his voice quiet as he muttered in a hushed tone ”Cyril… You know my… our body can’t take that.”

Both girls nodded happily, smiled in reply, and greeted the boys after introductions were properly made.

"I do," Bel nodded somewhat solemnly, or at least less jokingly, at Lyric's question about Beltane. "I have all the goddess's powers actually. But my mains ones are directly related to spring as you have guessed. I can give the gift of love and fertility to those that the goddess sees as worthy," she explained, knowing it probably sounded a bit confusing to those that didn't know her story, and mulled for a moment before adding.

"I am just a vessel for her, for Beltane, here on Earth. A reincarnation, perhaps?" she said unsure, as she looked at Azu who nodded in confirmation. Bel had always been revered by the druids that raised her, as the Beltane. However, Bel knew that couldn't really be true. She was not a god, only slightly god-like at best.

"Power givers," Azu nodded. She knew what they were talking about. "yes, I have heard of them. I don't know. I have heard some strange things, scary things, and it makes me kinda wary, you know?" she admitted with a thoughtful frown.

"I mean, I'd love to go, ask about them... but I'm afraid what might happen too," she suddenly added.

Bel then looked at Cyril and Lyric curiously, "Why ever can't you have magic?" she asked, looking at them both as Beltane might, and only seeing worthiness in both boys.
