The introduction of the story involves three people trapped in a house, hiding away from a rainstorm ruining their island vacation. They banter and joke, but soon they start arguing, tension growing as the rain goes on for days. One person speaks up and mentions a childhood story about the ocean and its emotions. This leads into the main story, of each person wanting to tell similar childhood stories. Throughout each story, these three will interrupt each other with commentary.

This leads into the first story, led by the person who brought up the conversation. They sing it in a soft lullaby, and when portraying the Ocean, take on an almost-serpentine form, but it's so inconsistent and flowy it's more like a wave trying to mimic some kind of body. This story revolves around the ocean finding unrequited love with a mortal that regularly swims within it, never noticing they are loved by an invisible force, and therefore cannot love the ocean in the way it wants.

This story is about the Ocean sleeping peacefully, only to wake up and see the lands around it have broken apart, shifted, and had taken parts of the ocean into itself as rivers and lakes. The story ends with the Ocean grieving over its confusion of its new bed and its loss of familiarity. By the end of the story, the voice has become horrified and near crying.

The characters now comment on some similarities and differences between their stories. An argument almost breaks out until the final person points out they haven't told their story. Every starts settling down, allowing for the final story to be told. It's a simple and short one, and the narration is accompanied by dance that matches the emotions of the story's characters. Sela uses the flexibility and fluidity of their body to its fullest extent, and for the Ocean they take on a jellyfish-like form. The story is about the ocean being a an ever-changing and fickle being that erodes rocks out of anger after cheerfully playing tag with children on the shores of beaches.
At the end, no one can decide who has the right story, since they all seem familiar, but different. One character theorizes that they're continuations, another theorizes that they're retellings, and the final says they're separate. This is intentionally muddled to the audience by Sela choosing distinct forms for the Ocean that share light similarities.

And then the story ends, with Sela returning to their adult form and nervously eyeing the crowd.
