"Oh, right. I'm the personal bodyguard to Zoraida del Bosque. Sorry, thought it was obvious."

"Let's see..." Broen said, closing his eyes. He was trying to remember all what Nick had said to Zora in the office. "Yeah. He said he was with the police. That you had already spoken to my boss. He asked me very pointed questions, like why she went to that warehouse that got blown up. He told me I should just tell him, not to waste his time with lies."

Broen nodded once and just kind of... kept going.
"I told him you'd already talked to Zora and that she had not been to the warehouse. From there it was... vague threats, demanding some cell phone. White with a black dragon on the back, is how he described it. He said, uh... 'the tides are changing,' which is some cryptic supervillain bullshit if I've ever heard it."

"More vague threats. 'Hopefully you'll do the right thing so this won't end in bloodshed.' It was all kinda suspicious. And like I said, if there's one thing I hate more than anything, it's someone who acts like they're some paragon of good and righteousness when they're actually a huge shithead."

Not obvious, since there had been a few dozen cases he'd been involved in, and Nick had never actually asked the questions he'd been trying to. Angelo had kicked him out first.

Angelo's face was pretty dark by the time Broen finished his explanation. It was... well, it was pretty much dirty cop 101. And while it was entirely possible that Broen was lying--that the whole thing was fabricated--in order for that to be true, Broen was going to have to have his own dirty cops reporting back.

It was a mess either way.

Angelo reached up, pinching at the bridge of his nose and squeezing his eyes shut for several minutes.

This had messy paperwork written all over it.

"Does it have prints?" Angelo said finally, leaning back in his chair. Broen was... well, it he was even halfway competent he'd know the answer.

He knew what the cellphone was. He knew because he'd seized several himself. There was a stack of them sitting in evidence somewhere, waiting for someone else to look them over properly.

Why was there one on his desk?

"And now you want me sniffing around, and if you're lucky, I'll nail Nick to the wall for being a dirty cop."

"Like the 95 fuckin' theses."

Broen stared Angelo down, super serious. He clasped his hands together and let out a sigh. "There's a good chance I'm lying, right? That's what you're thinking? I can't prove shit to you. I checked the phone for prints. I don't know how, but he didn't leave any on it. So all you'll find is mine."

He stood up, clenching his teeth now. He had fucked up, not having anything but a shitty empty phone and his word to go on. But he knew something was up. And he wasn't about to let Angelo just write him off because he himself was a shithead. He at least admitted to it.

"I know this type of asshole better than anyone, Sargeant Genovese. I'd bet my fucking life he's dirty." Broen turned around and lifted the back of his hair, showing off the base of his skull. And the half a dozen perfectly circular burn scars that his hairline only barely hid.

Angelo was agitated. Not even at Broen, just at the situation. Because it was a mess, and it was going to be more of a mess, and Broen getting angry and showing off...

Well, Angelo knew what those were. He wasn't stupid. Old and faded, but still there, and Angelo grimaced.

"You don't have to show me," Angelo said. He kind of wished that Broen hadn't. It was one of those things, another layer on top of the pile that was already in serious danger of toppling.

"I'm already going to look into it. Anyone reports that someone might be dirty, I look into it. I kick it up the chain. I dig around. So you don't have to try and prove it to me."

He leaned forward, picking up the phone and flipping it over to stare at where the crest would be.

"I'm keeping this, I guess?"

Broen let his hair back down and turned to glare at Angelo. He felt... it was hard to say how he felt. Not dirty, not vulnerable. Just burning rage. "I'm not giving you any chance to write me the fuck off. I know what I am. But I will nail myself to a fuckin cross over this."

He sighed and rubbed his eyes. Fuck if he was going to tear up here. "Don't you say a word to any of the Junior Woodscouts. Keep the phone. Do what you can."

Apparently it was a sore subject. Or something beyond a sore subject, something that bothered a kid that seemed to be consistently described as nearly impossible to bother.

"Unless you run into one of them on the way out," Angelo said, "they aren't ever going to know you're here. Internal affairs might, but not right away. That's last resort. But..."

Angelo paused, wondering if he should hold back since Broen was so obviously bothered, and then decided against it.

"Don't know where this all happened, but if you pull the tapes, it makes my job a hell of a lot easier. Nothing puts an end to he-said-she-said faster than here's a tape of him doing exactly what I said he did."

"Mmmm..." Broen shrugged and scratched his cheek. "They won't see me leave. I guarantee it. But as for tapes. I mean, I'll see what I can do. I don't know if we were being recorded or not. Just-"

Broen sighed. "Wasn't me he talked to. It was my boss. I'm just trying to keep her separated from this bullshit as much as possible. I take my job seriously. I was there though. Fly on the wall sort of deal."

A lie. Kind of a stupid lie, if Angelo was being serious, but also the kind of stupid lie that he could understand. Broen was trying to put himself between Angelo and Zora. Trying to keep her out of it. Simple, easy, whatever.

"Doesn't matter," Angelo said. "If you got a tape, and you can get me a copy of the tape, that'd help a lot. Makes it quick and easy. Good solid evidence stops any possible he-said-she-said from happening. Get a copy of the tape, leave the original where it is, and then the police can pull an official copy."

Broen turned and looked at the door, considering. "Yeah, sure. I'll see what I can do. Uh..."

Broen stopped, considering something. He frowned hard, then grinned. "I owe you one, Scoutmaster. And I don't take favors lightly. You bury this shit and you got me on speed dial. If nothing else than for making my job easier."

Turning, he went over to the window and popped it open. Frosted glass. Clever. He shot a smirk and a quirked eyebrow back at Angelo. "I'll catch you later, Scoutmaster. Sooner if I get that footage."

He took a step, like he was about to climb out the window. But then he was just gone.

Broen wasn't quite getting out without a few words.

"This isn't about favors," Angelo said very, very firmly. "And you don't owe me anything. I'm doing this because I've got an even bigger chip on my shoulder about dirty cops than most people, and if I'm doing this as a favor to you, that makes me a dirty cop."

Angelo huffed as Broen was out the window, moving over to close the glass behind him, making sure it was secured.
