An AP class. More work, at first glance. Maybe a dedicated project or two.
Didn't books respond better that people?
Clutching the paper that announced the class she was suggested to take - some sort of mathematics class. As much as she loved science, she would have to pass on this class - until she'd spotted the course's requirements.
It was AP.
And then she thought about how far she could go, if she took this.... what was it? She checked the back - biology class. It was advanced placement, which meant it counted for a higher mark percent, and had more work she could throw herself into. She'd already finished most of the course work early in her normal science class... and work might distract her from what had happened.
The night after the ball had only made it worse. She still felt bad after the whole blowup... and the night after the ball, she'd gone over to Roland's, or he'd come over to her house... she couldn't remember. She'd had too much chocolate after he'd left - so much it even made her pale hands shake and sent her into a laughing fit.
Yes, maybe this class had been the better decision.
And so, here she was, again, to her dismay, walking down yet another empty hallway to meet yet another teacher. She hoped it was worth it.
The teacher's name was Trent. Something Trent. Or Trent Something. Mr Trent? Aswan wasn't sure. At this point, she was curious if the teachers would listen. Maybe she would call him by his first name.
Okay, maybe not. Her mind did NOT like that idea.
Her nearly transparent hand hesitated before knocking on the door.
"Excuse me. Mr Trent? I'm here to talk to you about the AP Biology class you offer."

Trent wasn't to busy but he was certainly not idle, he was rarely idle these days. He was already planning for more creatures to bring into the class to show them the interesting and exciting ways biology could turn in all sort of different Magical Creatures. Though this Planar Wheel didn't have much in terms of 'interesting' life as far as he had found. But being a Dragon that had traveled hundreds... or was it thousands by this point? He shook his head, no time to drift off into his memories now. Perhaps this Quarter he could bring in a Storm Giant's heart or possibly a bone, show the kids how their bone structure differed from that of humans and what was similar.

Trying to remember the last place he had met a storm giant took a while but his thought process was nudged off track by a faint knocking sound at his door. There was a voice as well but Trent thought it was odd he didn't sense much coming from the other side of the door. Standing and putting his quill down, he prefered them over the pens that were around now-a-days, and walked over to the door. Opening the door smoothly and unhurried he looked around before looking down. There was a small younger girl standing before him, they were pale and slightly see through from his initial glance at her but it was rude to simply stare at people. "Hmm? Ah yes, I am Trent Evensman... My class of course of course. Come on in little one." Trent turned around leaving the door open as he began to walk over to his desk once more pretty sure the Spirit was following him.

"What sort of things can I answer for you... umm... I don't think I've caught your name yet little one?" Trent promptly sat down in his chair and with a flick of his wrist and a small magic circle a chair appeared on the other side of it so this potential new student of his class could sit down. Though as he paused for a moment and looked at it he mumbled under his breath about needing to not be so easy to fall through, and with another simple snap of his fingers it faded from the Material world slightly so it would be easier for Ghosts and the like to interact with. Turning his gaze back to this student he blinked and smiled unaware that his eyes for a brief moment went from human to draconian before slowly fading back to human once more.

A quill.
That was Aswan's first sign that something was a little bit odd with this teacher. Who used quills over pens, these days? Pens were much more accurate, and much more portable. Perhaps he'd been around a while - or maybe, just maybe, he was a ghost like herself, only from a time long removed. Although, to be sure, Trent - er, Mr Evensman - did seem like a sort of grandfather type - but not ghostlike, not by far. Not translucent, not floating, not apparently touch-sensitive... not cold.
She took a few cautious but confident steps into the room, following in Mr. Evensman's footsteps, to where (presumably) his desk sat. Again, very formal, which again pointed to the idea of the teacher (professor?) being very old, or at least old-fashioned. Quills and big desks.
The major shock, though came when, with a simple flick of the wrist, a small ring of what she could only assume to be magic appeared. A chair sat inside it, opposite Mr. Evensman's own. The professor seemed to mumble at it for a few seconds before - and Aswan couldn't believe this - it morphed, faded, changed until it was about the same transparency as herself. This, she realized - he must have done so that it would be easier for her to interact.
Old-fashioned and thoughtful.
Gingerly the pale girl took a seat and sighed, giving a polite nod to the professor. "Apologies - my name is Aswan Gomari, student at Starlight Academy High School, hard worker, and seeker of knowledge."
Well, that last part sounded... er.... unique.
She continued on. "I have a few questions regarding the content of the course." And about you, she thought to herself, as she caught the eyes of her potential professor shift and reveal something less than human underneath, so brief that she questioned if it was real - oh, but of course it was real. She had just witnessed his magic. Therefore, logic dictated he was a magical creature, and thus not human.
It did nothing to help settle her, though. Ahem.
"For one, I read the class itinerary, but I was confused as to what exactly is taught. Is it human biology, alien biology....? It's unclear here."

The little ghost introduced herself as Aswan, Trent nodded in understanding as she explained what she wanted while he filed away some questions of his own at the back of his mind. He was going to need to do some research on ghosts and spirits again so he could keep Aswan in mind if she did decide to join his class. It even seemed that Aswan had already come with questions in mind, he did prefer students to think on his classes even when not in this class room. When Aswan finished asking her question about his class Trent nodded sagely. "This class MDMC Biology stands for Multi Dimensional Magical Creature Biology. I do not put down a hard itinerary for there is simply to much in this field of study to simply be learned in a life time of years let alone a single school year. I cover most of the basics at the beginning, things such as the difference between a Magical Creature and a Creature that can do Magic. I do cover a different sub-species of humans in this field of study but they are not the focus if that is more specific towards your question."

Trent put his hand about a few inches above his desk top and another circle of magic appeared and a Volume labeled 'Introduction to Multi-Dimensional Biology' the Authors name was his own as he was essentially the creator of this field of study. "This book is the start, there are many other books leading to many different Planar Wheels each would take years of someones life to study. But this condenses things a little. It will also go into the common terminology and the separation of life forms into their categories and sub-categories. I do not expect first time students to understand these until we have covered the broad Planar Categories." He shrugged there wasn't much to it if you understood it but sometimes students had a hard time.

Leaning forward he observed Aswan for a moment before nodding, "Such as if I was to categorize you into the system I would say that you are a Medium sized undead, Human Origin, With incorporeal properties. I would get into more specifics but those are more for the College courses not the AP studies." He only shrugged once more. "What else would you like to know Mrs. Aswan?"

As soon as Mr. Evensman started to speak, Aswan got out a little notebook, clicked her pen, and within seconds was taking note (literally) of everything the professor was explaining. All the while, her mind started to race. She was excited! This seemed like work, and quite a lot of it. But she was sure she could handle it. More neat scribbles filled the page.
"That's what the acronym is for - MDMC. I assumed, based on the initials M.C that it would refer to Manta Carlos. However I get it now. Magical beings.... In multiple dimensions."
Aswan was surprised. That wasn't the itinerary? It seemed she'd only found or read part of it, but then - where was the other part?
She supposed it was all in the application of the course. Truly, something interesting. Not just human biology, either, like in her boring years at her old high school. No, these were much bigger and better things. And, to top it all off, the textbook. Obviously written by her potential professor, it was thick and probably illustrated with loads of different diagrams and explanations. Why, she reasoned, she could sit down with that book for months, studying, and yet never seeming to reach the end!
It would by, by all means, a fairy tale to Aswan. With the same careful hand she'd used to pull back the chair, she now touched the textbook, marveling at it silently. And that was just the start.
"Mr Evensman, if I may - I assume you essentially are the pioneer of this field... this is quite the accomplishment, sir."
He'd even taken the liberty of classifying herself as an example. Thoughtful! And smart. He had already figured out that she was, in fact, a dead human (though the medium size might have bothered her a tiny bit) with incorporeal abilities. Spot-on. She nodded.
"That's exactly right, sir. In short, a ghost." She cleared her throat to speak again. "If you were to describe an overview of the course material, how would you do so?"
Now she was just asking questions, but a thought popped into the back of her head. What if... what if he could help her find out why her godforsaken biology was causing her powers to go haywire?
She shooed it away for now. Better to ask it later.

"That is in fact true. So far, to my knowledge I am the only being to have done this. There could be more out there but I never met any fellow travelers like myself along the way. Or if there were then I might just be out living them all and have a more extensive library of notes than they do." Trent gave a sad shrug, it would have been interesting to compare notes with someone who had traveled the Planar Wheels like himself.

After identifying Aswan's person they young looking spirit asked Trent what he would use as an overview of his course. "I would have to say... Complex and breath taking i think. But I mainly wanted to teach this course to teach you young ones about all the different creatures that were out there and see the similarities between themselves and their world to those of another."

As he spoke though he caught the lingering tell tale signs that the student before him was thinking of a question and then moved away from it. Looking a little saddened that she would do this Trent put his hands together and put his full attention on Aswan. "Aswan, is there something you would like to ask? I encourage my students to ask me any question that pops to their mind. I disagree with anyone that might ask you to hold your questions back. I feel that is counter productive to an educational environment."

Interesting.
If she were to have understood this correctly (which, of course, her analytical brain would have) - he was one of the few, if not the sole, researcher in a field all his own, which he'd turned into a class dealing with the scientific aspects of that unimaginable world. She could only imagine what it would be like to stroll a world like that. Something new. And besides, based on Mr Evensman's own overview, he considered the material to be "complex and breathtaking." Wouldn't it help to see, to understand, to know more things?
And then -
Shoot, he'd caught on to her unasked question. Of course he had, she reasoned, he's a teacher. Of course he would know the glint of a burning but unasked question in a student's eye. She'd seen it herself when she was tutoring her peers (or, here - her friends). The pale girl cleared her throat and nodded.
"Yes, actually. There was a question I hesitated to ask, because it is somewhat personal, but... have you had any experience with ghostly biology, in your class or in your experience?" And darn it, he was absolutely right to not hold any questions back - it was counterproductive and inefficient... but human to internalize doubt on the matter. Well, she was neither counterproductive nor human - what did that make her, then?
Idiotic emotions again.
"Again, I would be interested in taking this class regardless - it's just the fact that ghost biology would be interesting and useful."

Trent nodded his head as he listened to Aswan and learning the question she would have for him to answer. Once she was done Trent gave a friendly smile. "I have in fact met many ghosts along my travel. Though I have not had the chance to teach my classes on them as most do not want to be moved from the location of their death, or are hostile to intruders and would prefer to attack them on sight rather than talking with them." He could only shrug at that, though he did know enough about incorporeal creature biology.

"What sort of things are you curious about? Though I should let you know a lot of ghosts differ depending on the strength of the Ethereal Realm on the Material Plane and the Planar Wheel we are in. Here the Ethereal realm is very flexible so things might vary from Spirit to Spirit. But please little one, how can I help."

So he had had experience with ghosts. Or rather, as he put it with a kind smile befitting the kind of teacher Aswan was starting to see him as, many different ghosts from different Material and Planar Wheels. Which, in Aswan's eyes, was starting to sound much better than this one. Seriously - she could not find a single thing to help her out here. That is... until Mr. Evensman came in.
"Well," she started, obviously perking up, her eyes gaining a curious shine to them, despite being translucent, "I will start by telling you a bit about my circumstances. Since I don't know what/who've you've encountered, I'll start by saying that yes, I died traumatically - but..." - and here she paused to think. Could this have been a variable? - "I left my death place and wandered for about three years before coming here via scout. I have not been violent, as far as experience goes, but rather tranquil actually. I have a whole life set up here, now - complete with a continuing education and responsabilities. Although, as of late, I have been fading, becoming translucent."
Pause.
"I have done a fair bit of research on the subject, but the only information I have uncovered is the consequences of the fade, unchecked. I have searched around for the correct answer, trained until I am sore, and yet nothing works."
A tired sigh. No, an exhausted sigh, filled with shame and disappointment, as she leaned back in the chair. "I thought I would be able to solve the problem - to find all the answers- on my own..."

Trent didn't say a word the whole time that Aswan spoke. She probably needed to get this all out and he could wait until the end. He learned all he needed as soon as he heard that she was 'living' a tranquil life. It probably meant that with herself feeling at peace that she was slowly crossing over to the other side and passing one. Nornally this would be a good thing, a spirit finding peace in the next life but from how Aswan sounded as she continued was that she didn't want to pass on just yet.

Once Aswan went quiet after she leaned back in her chair, probably a little saddened that she hadn't found the answer on her own, he tried to give her a reassuring smile. "Aswan, little one, there is no shame in not finding the answer. Even if it might take years to find the answer sometimes it's that journey that makes the hunt that much more enjoyable no matter the pits and falls you might accumulate on the way. There is also no shame in asking for help when you feel you cannot walk on. Now, I haven't actually written this knowledge down as I never really saw it's need to be written."

Trent cleared his throat as if he was getting prepared to do a lecture. "Normally a ghost or spirit is trying to find a way to resolve a past conflict in their life so they may pass on. This can sometimes take hundreds possibly thousands of years to accomplish for some. Others could fade away after simply telling someone that they love them. But it is that need to stay to finish something that usually keeps a ghost around on a Material Plane. For you from what it sounds like was a hunt for a place to belong, this would allow you to travel and to find this place to call home. Along the way your full personality probably joined your hunt for a Home and now you are more than simply a ghost but less than a Material being... This is probably why you have not crossed over after you came to the realization that you found a place to be. Hence fading rather than crossing over."

Trent gave another small smile. "However because you are more than the echo of someone's personality projected back onto the Plane but instead a full consciousness, you do not want to leave. You are clinging to the Material plane with what ever energy you have left and this drive to find a way to stop fading as indeed slowed it's progress. However without something containing your being you will continue to slip and fade away by degrees. But there is a way to solidify your being as part of this world. You will need to possess an Object of some sort. This could be anything from a statue, to a certain spot of ground, to an article of clothing or jewelry. As you probably will still want to be able to move around I would suggest something from the latter group. The higher quality the item the easier it is to maintain the possession. If you'd like I could part with something of my own to give you so that you need not worry about hunting for one on short notice."
