The wave broke hard tossing Dawn six feet over the top. For a few fleeting seconds, she was entirely airborne. She didn't mind these moments, even though she knew she would crash down into the water, in these moments she could fly. Moments later she crashed into the water, sinking below the surface. She could feel the water all around her. The deeper she went, the greater the pressure. It was comforting to her as her body drifted lower. Even the water rushing past her ears didn't disturb her now. She knew that soon she would hit the bottom, and then she would surface and do it all over again.
When the bottom came, Dawn found more than sand. Pain. Blinding mind melting pain. She wanted to scream, tried to scream, but no sound escaped her lips under the water. She kicked and thrashed as she fought to surface. It felt like an eternity as she fought her way up. When she finally managed to breach her scream burned her throat. She was still too far out to be heard properly.
A feeling of panic shot over her as she struggled to keep floating. Her leg hurt. It hurt bad, too much to move. Dawns board floated beside her and she reached out for it. It took her several tries to pull herself onto the deck, and when she managed it she lay gasping. The waters around her were steadily turning read as she bled out from a large gash on her leg. She was bleeding out, something had been severed. There was no way she could get to shore on her own without losing too much blood.
Dawn fumbled with her shirt pulling from its depths a bright orange whistle on a string. This was her emergency plan, the sound would travel further. Maybe someone on the pier would hear her. Maybe someone would call for help. Maybe someone would come out and get her to shore.
"SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEE"
She placed the whistle to her lips and blew it hard and loud.
"SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE"
A short breath and a louder harder blow.
"SCREE.... SCREEEEEEE... SCREEE"
She gave three more blasts on the whistle before stoppig to breath. Hopefully someone heard her.
