Tending to the flower beds around school was relaxing. Myrrh loved his personal garden at home, but he grew those flowers for the purpose of perfume making. His personal garden was designed for efficiency, yield and quality. The school flower gardens just had to look nice. Which is what Myrrh liked about the gardening club. It was his time to relax with fellow plant lovers and help make the school into a better place.

So, when he saw some red-headed dude about to step onto a patch of young, green flower sprouts he acted fast. Myrrh vocalized a sound akin to nails on a chalkboard. A very tame, and harmless version of his potentially hurtful screech. In the heat of the moment it seemed more startling than a simple, 'stop!'. Regardless of his methods, the sprouts were unharmed. Myrrh flew over, landing with a hop before the dude. "You need to watch where you're going, man. You almost crushed these flowers."

Myrrh never quite made eye contact when talking, and though his words sounded harsh, they were spoken in the way an adult would chide a naughty child. Though, given how Myrrh had to look up to see the guy's face it might be hard to take him seriously.

received_276297883451172.pngAj was just coming back from a session with his therapist as he crossed into the courtyard. The session took a little longer than normal and had left him slightly flustered. With his hands tucked deep within his hoodies pouch, Aj wasn't paying attention to where he was going.
A screech, that was the best way he could describe it, was the only thing that kept him from trampling a flower bed. His hesitant step put him backwards as someone few over to him chiding him about watching where he was going.
"I...I'm sorry. I was just...sorry."
His voice was worried and timid. That was when golden eyes looked up slightly from his feet to notice the person that was getting onto him was... avian as well? What luck. A hand absentmindedly rubbed his nullification bracelet making sure it was still there as he tried putting on a small smile. Something that seemed out of place for him and unused for some time.

"Yeah, well. . . just be careful. In the future." Myrrh muttered, his anger deflated by this guy's shy response. Jeez. "I'm in the gardening club so it's my responsibility to look after the gardens." He added, to justify his actions. This guy was so awkward and Myrrh didn't feel like looking like a bad guy in the middle of the school courtyard. People had phones and he didn't want to see himself show up on the island's social media.

Myrrh had to change the subject, and went with the first thing he saw. "What's up with the nullification bracelet. Powers too strong?" He tried to stand up straighter while talking, but there was still at least a foot difference between their height.

"Yea. I will. Im sorry I was distracted. Thank you for stopping me."
Aj knew they might have been starting a scene and that was the last thing he wanted. It seemed like it was a mutual feeling as the subject was changed. It was unfortunately changed to another sensitive subject. A hand covered his bracelet before he spoke.
"Uh...not really. I just can't...uh... control them fully yet."
Despite their significant height difference, Aj felt smaller than his conversation partner currently. It was that moment that Aj realized he hadn't introduced himself and he bit his lip nervously.
"Oh uh...I'm Aj..."

Myrrh shuffled awkwardly at the apology and that was when he realized he had no plan for what came after screeching at a guy. Oh well, it wasn't like he cared about this random dude or anything. "Ah, that sucks." Myrrh said, not noticing how the topic made Aj uncomfortable.

However, Myrrh did not like their height difference. The teen harpy never liked how small he was compared to most of his peers. "Cool." Myrrh said, then grudgingly added his name. "Myrrh. . ." He looked this guy up and down, clearly wondering what Aj's deal was with his powers. "You'll get the hang of them, maybe. Or maybe you won't. Wouldn't be the first kid who can't control their powers."

"Yea...I figured I haven't had them that long. So I can still figure them out maybe..."
Aj unconsciously pulled at the bottom of his hoodie to straighten it a little. He was trying to think of how to say what he was thinking, but everything sounded wrong. Eventually Aj just decided to spit it out.
"I....like your wings."
A shy smile appear on his face as hand rubbed the back of his neck. He wasn't sure how Myrrh would take it. Aj hadn't exactly been practicing social interactions this last year and had just recently decided to try to talk with people more.

Myrrh did a sort of half nod. He supposed he could understand what it was like to suddenly gain powers. Wasn't really something he thought much about, he was born supernatural and grew up around them. People came to the island all the time because of sudden powers. Myrrh knew several who never shut up about it. What he didn't expect, however, was that comment on his wings.

"Oh! Um, thanks." Myrrh's wings did a little flap and he stood a little straighter. He put a lot of work into making his feathers look nice. "Gotta keep them in good condition. I use only the best ptoducts on them; all natural, organic and locally sourced." The slightest of smiles pulled on the corner of Myrrh's mouth.

Aj smiled again to Myrrh. It was very obvious that he took great care of his feathers. The phoenix admired them for a moment before nodding along as Myrrh told him what he used in their care.
"Locally sourced makes sense. Not only can you make sure you can keep getting it, but it can be specialized to specifically what you need."
He fidgets with his hands as he talks. Even though he had been here for a year, he hadn't actually interacted with many people so the details of what he could and couldn't say wasn't exactly there. Aj constantly worried about saying something that might upset someone.
"So...can I ask what you...uh...are?"

It was very hard to resist the urge to pose, but Myrrh held back. He didn't want to come off as too brag-y. "And with local products you know what's in it and can talk to the person who makes it. Anyone who buys commercial are just corporate chickens. Cheap, cheap! Must buy cheap!" Myrrh snorted a laugh at those sad chickens who wouldn't know good product even if it fell in their lap.

"What I am?" Myrrh repeated, the question saved Aj from what could have been a long rant on 'corporate chickens'. The question wasn't uncommon and it was better than people assuming Myrrh was some kind of generic bird man. "I'm a Greek harpy. One variation at least. I've known a few without hands." He wiggled his fingers to emphasize his point.

Aj chuckled along with Myrrh at the corporate chicken joke. It was clever he had to admit. Unfortunately Aj was more than likely one of those corporate chickens, just not really by choice. He didn't really know this new world well enough, but was trying. He was happy to try out new places and things, and tried to make sure he did anytime he overheard someone talking about a new place.
"Oh a harpy? That's pretty cool. I mean, makes sense now, but I just didn't, but....sorry. That's cool."
Fumbling through his words. Great. At least he was able to recover it after the massive faceplant of social failure he had just gone through. A small smile came up as Aj looked back to Myrrh with golden eyes.
"I'm a phoenix. Or, so I've been told. Birds of a feather I guess?"
