Name: Sapere
Age: 150
Birthday: November 1
Gender: Genderfluid, female-presenting (she/they pronouns)
Species: Nightmare
Category: Supporting Character
Career: Nightmare
Appearance Description:
As a nightmare, Sapere has no true form and generally shifts to whatever is convenient. While in this world, any form she chooses will be in shades of gray, like a black and white movie. And whatever form she is in will appear shadowy, out-of-focus, slightly chaotic - as if the form itself is unstable. She flickers slightly at random moments. And she is nearly invisible when seen from the corner of your eye. Her voice is soft and slightly tinny - like something you'd hear on an old radio.
While on the Island she has two preferred forms, which she shifts between often and with ease:
Unicorn Form:
Masquerading as a unicorn for their son, Sapere's form is a uniform coal black from horn to tail. She appears to be made from some sort of tar-like substance, which reflects light at odd angles as it swirls and melts. Occasionally parts of her body will randomly lighten, even becoming pure white. At 12h (4' at the withers) she is rather small for a horse, closer in height to a large pony. Sapere is a slender and graceful mare, with a long, flowing mane and tail.
Human form:
She is also petite in her chosen human form, 4'4", with a small-breasted, nearly androgynous body and a feminine face. Her hair is usually done up in an old-fashioned style, which makes it seem short. Her skin is as flawless as porcelain and she usually appears to be wearing deep eyeshadow. She has absolutely no colour on her body or clothes, like a silent-film star. She wears a variety of clothes, usually dresses, sometimes changing them every minute. Sapere is usually very still when observing people, tending to stare and not move a muscle. But when she does move, she can appear chaotic and hyperactive, a combination of floating, dancing, and walking.
Personality Description:
Sapere's personality is mainly observant and curious, either watching in the background or prodding at things and people to see how they work. An odd mix of bold and cautious. Being unused to stability, the nightmare is highly chaotic and unpredictable in action, emotion, and thought. Sapere is a nightmare creature, with non-human morals. She has almost no experience with people (except for other dreamworld creatures) outside of their dreams. She is often surprised by things but rarely feels fear. Like her son, she has an odd view of beauty but is not quite as innocent as him. Sapere loves her son more as a precious thing to mold than with human affection.
Species Abilities:
Dreamworld - Can enter dreamworld and exit effortlessly. Can only enter living world at night (sunset to sunrise). Can only stay in living world for at most 2 hours (realworld time), then needs to rest 48 minutes (2 days in dreamworld) before appearing again. Within dreamworld, she can travel at speeds of roughly 20mph without tiring. Can be harmed within the dreamworld.
Sapere can teach another nightmare/dream creature/extra-planar being how to enter and exit dreamworld - then they'd be able to stay on their own, but they may pass out when leaving. They could theoretically enter a dream but would have no control. And she couldn't teach dream control to someone unrelated. Sapere can bring another person in with her if they are willing, but she must keep contact with them at all times, and they will pass out for at least an hour on leaving. They could not enter any dreams.
Shapeshifter
- As a nightmare creature, even when visible in the real world, Sapere can shift into any form they desire, with a size limit of a 5' sphere. They will always be intangible, in shades of black and white, and chaotic. This is a purely visual effect - they don't actually become any of the creatures they shift into.
- Can briefly (up to 5 minutes, with a resting period of however long they use this ability) become tangible. Becoming solid tires them twice as fast, and they will have to return to dreamworld sooner. They could lift at most 25lbs, and move half as slow as an average human. Any claws/horns/teeth would be extremely dull and lack force. Can't use any other abilities that require concentration while tangible.
- Can become invisible (up to 15 minutes, with a resting period of however long they use this ability). This only affects sight, not any other senses. Moving would cause shimmers in the air, outlining them.
Dream Creature
Sapere is a dream creature and only loosely in the waking world even when she manifests. She literally floats through the world, passing through any material, save those magically enchanted to repel her kind. She is somewhat bonded to the earth and would not be able to pass through its outer atmosphere, even via a spaceship or similar thing.
Her vision and sight are highly distorted as if she's seeing through glass, and her perception sometimes shifts as if she's in a dream. She is entirely unaffected by visual illusions and glamours, though she can still see them as faint ghostly images. If a person has a natural other form (ie shifters/werewolves/etc), she will sometimes see that form superimposed on their current one - this can make shifters with multiple forms very confusing to look at. She cannot see naturally invisible creatures or glamours that physically change form.
Can sense other nightmare creatures.
She is mentally chaotic, rendering mind-reading nearly impossible - her mind would just seem to be static with random bursts of sound, she cannot receive telepathy either.
Dream Aura - within 25' of the nightmare, people become easily distracted and more prone to imagination & day dreams. The longer within the aura, the more likely things are to take a sinister dreamlike tone (trees seem to reach, things seem not quite there, faces look oddly unfamiliar)
Nightmare -
Can see in the dark as clearly as an average human could see in the day. Understands all human spoken language and sign language. Ageless. Doesn't eat/sleep/breathe. Can only be hurt while in waking world by bright lights (fluorescent lights would be agony, a flashlight would be like a pinprick), fire (would burn her like a normal creature), and enchantments specific to nightmare creatures.
Dream vision - sees flickers of images around peoples heads, their daydreams/deep hopes and fears. The pictures are highly symbolic and generally too quick to interpret, becoming clearer with more time spent with that person.
Biography:
Born of a chaotic meeting between two nightmares in dreamworld, Sapere was raised up among shifting, imaginary creatures in a chaotic plane. Though technically ageless and never actually young, she was taught by her parent nightmares how to navigate and survive in both the dreamworld and dreams themselves.
Both a watcher and a teacher, manipulating the dreams of those who lived on Earth to learn or impart lessons or sometimes just for fun, the nightmare was content to remain for 100 years, only leaving dreamworld for brief moments to gaze on people from afar, curious about this other world but disconnected from it. Most nightmares were content to stay in their own little patch, but Sapere was a wanderer. They would rarely spend more than a few nights in the same person's dream and instead traveled widely all over dreamworld, meeting many interesting creatures and sometimes glimpsing dreams from non-humans.
One of these dreams happened to be the dreams of a unicorn. The purity and innocence of the creature so enchanted Sapere that she did not manipulate his dreams, instead taking on the form of a literal night mare unicorn and speaking with him, running through fields, just being free. She spent much time in this unicorn's dreams, fascinated, until he asked her if she could appear in the real world.
There was a spark between them and a bit of magic caused Revel to be born. But even with magic, these things took some time, and Sapere was a dream creature. She was exhausted and longing to spend more time in her home. By the time Revel was born, she had lost her interest in the unicorn. She now had something much more fascinating in her son who was both pure like his father and twisted like herself. She kept the young discorn in the dreamworld exclusively for 25 years, traveling and teaching him about the world and dreams.
When her son's curiousity became great enough, she taught him how to leave dreamworld and return. She still kept in contact with him, but because of the way time worked between the worlds, she didn't become bored as she had with his father. Once her son discovered Manta Carlos, he convinced his mother to step into the real world once more. She's fascinated by the variety of creatures and may stick around in this place longer than she has in others.

(all done with player permission/collaboration)
Can enter dreams to manipulate them and/or communicate with someone. Only one dream can be entered every 4 hours from the time dream is left - personal time.
Can leave a navigation marker that will enable her to refind the person when they dream again. Can leave 20 markers at a time. Can remove markers at will or let them vanish. Markers last 24 hours and then must be replaced. Will immediately be able to tell if a marked person is dreaming in the dreamworld, can tell if they're getting closer or farther within a 5-mile radius, and can pinpoint direction within 250 feet. On arrival in waking-world they can sense if a person is marked when within 5'.
The nightmare can't enter the dreams of holy beings/anyone with a mental shield. If they enter the dream of a powerful mind magician or a lucid dreamer, they will have to struggle for control and could be injured. If they stay in the dream they could be under control until the dreamer lets them go or wakens.
They can be harmed by aspects of the dreams even when not being controlled if they do not pay enough attention.
They can talk to people in their dreams in any form. The dreamer will remember the dream, even if they usually forget, but won't have any reason to believe it was more than a dream unless it is revealed to them.
For manipulation - there's a chance the person doesn't even remember their dreams, but the more often she does this with the same person, the more likely dreams are to stick and infiltrate subconscious.
-Can leave subliminal messages, requires time to sink in.
-Can manipulate items in the dream as if they were real and with twice the strength of an average human, in any form or invisibly.
- Can cause images to reoccur that they have already seen in the dreamer's dreams. The more often they reoccur, the easier this is. Must concentrate on this ability to keep the image. The longer the image is concentrated on, the more likely it will stick for the dream or reoccur.
- Can intensify/nullify/switch negative emotions (fear, anger, sadness) associated with a particular dream. Must concentrate for 10 minutes (waking-time) or 2 minutes for fear, then associated emotion is permanent for dream.
- Can form images they've seen in other dreams. The more often they do this to the same person, the easier it becomes. Must concentrate on this ability to keep the image, it will fade as soon as concentration is lost. This does not count as a reoccurring image unless the dreamer dreams it on their own. There is a 25% chance that this will cause the dreamer to wake up, a 50% chance that the dreamer will realize they're in a dream and be able to fight for control.
