When Sam had arrived at the school, he didn't think to join clubs. His main concern at that point was not landing himself in jail and figuring out how things were supposed to work. A bit later on, though, he had been encouraged to join at least a few things so that he did something with his spare time.

The problem with growing up where he did was that you learned very early on how to win a fight, or where to stab somebody to hurt them the most, but you were never taught normal sports. Sam didn't know how to play really any sport. Maybe basketball, but he had only played 3 or 4 rounds in his 16 years of life and that wasn't exactly good enough for a proper team.

So, after considering, he joined track and field. Everyone could run, right?

It turned out that he was actually pretty good at it. After a while, he started to like it. A good run took his mind off things, and recently he had needed that sort of distraction in his life. Nobody really went out onto the campus late at night, save for the nocturnal kinds, but most of them didn't frequent the track. He had just finished a few laps, and had been planning to head back to the dorms. Class started soon, and he didn't want to ruin his sleep schedule that much.

Rory was in something of the same boat. Running had always been a release for her. Since she'd gotten her Ijian abilities, though, Rory didn't get that tightness in her chest that people did when they ran too long. Her muscles didn't get sore. She didn't get tired. It took some of the fun away from exercising.

She happened not to be paying attention, figuring no one would be out so late running the schools track when she ran headfirst into... someone. She gasped and tried to stop full impact but failed.

"Shit! Are you alright?"

Sam probably should have heard her coming before. He did hear her coming, but just didn't expect this to happen. He had to be careful with these things, seeing that he couldn't see and all, but he had been way too focused on running to actually notice his surroundings so well.

Luckily, his instincts were still intact as he braced himself at the impact. At least it wasn't someone larger than him, or one of those people who were deceptively heavy. Despite that, he still staggered a few steps, taking a bit longer than he would've liked steadying himself.

"Hey," he said, pushing his hair back. "Hey. Sorry. I'm fine. You?"

Rory rubbed the back of her neck and shifted her weight. "Yeah, I'm fine." And Rory stopped herself from saying something silly. Like... off the top of her head 'nothing of this dimension can harm me.' Which both sounded odd and shitty.

"I didn't expect anyone to be out this late on the track. I should have been watching where I was going."

"Good," Sam said. He shifted his weight from leg to leg, testing for injuries. Nothing, maybe a bit of superficial bruising. Not something that he'd worry about. at least. Considering his options, he added, "I'm glad you're fine."

He paused to attempt to come up with a reason for his run. There was really nothing, unless if he wanted to spill his guts to a girl he barely knew. Not something very high on his priority list. "No, it's okay. I didn't expect anyone either. I should've been more careful as well."

Awe, Christ. Well, it helped that he seemed almost as awkward about this as Rory was. And while she wasn't keen on letting people in on her problems, she'd never really been one for dishonesty or subtlety (that latter one never worked for her anyway — come to think of it, neither had the former).

"Er, uh. Yeah. I'm not nocturnal or anything. Just.. less easy to get distracted at night." A brief pause. "Okay, I'm sorry for asking this, I don't know if it's rude here. Are you human?"

"Yeah. Or as close as it gets, here," Sam said. He had learned that this question could be considered rude, but with all the human charms flying around it should be alright to ask. Of course he knew about discrimination and all sorts of things, but he still found the whole attitude just a bit uncomfortable. "Not rude."

"I'm Sam," he added. It was nice to introduce himself, right? People liked that. "I study here. I'm a senior in the upcoming year."

"As close as it gets here, huh?" Because wasn't that a bit of an odd thing to say? Maybe Rory should have been saying that, what with being part Alien slash parahuman. But she fully considered herself human.

"Oh, shit. Right. Sorry. I'm Rory Phillips. I'm a senior here too. Or going to be, when this school year starts. Had to, uh, catch up on the history of this world in remedial." And because that might have been confusing, she continued with, "I'm from a different dimension. Kind of like this one, but World War two didn't happen, and, uh, we had superheroes and supervillains."

"Yeah. As close as it gets. I mean, I'm pretty sure most normal kids can't hear the show that someone in that dorm over there's watching," Sam said, jerking his thumb back to where the sound was coming from. He shrugged. "I can't see, but everything else makes up for it."

He shifted his weight from leg to leg. Not many people just spoke to him like this. He'd been conditioned to think that they wanted something from him. "Different dimension, huh? Makes ours sound pretty boring. You like it here?"

Subconciously, Rory's gaze followed Sam's motion to the dorms. "Shit, that's a neat power. Doesn't hurt when you hear something loud, does it?"

She looked back at him and noticed the shifting. Did he want to move too? Should she ask? "Not really," she admitted. "But I miss home. I miss my family and all that. Also, being real, everything is too normal here for me."

She paused.

"You want to continue jogging? Walking?"
