Madeline knew about it before it was even in the news. She saw it in a vision, when she was thinking about how she could afford all those nice clothes over at Theia. It was a strange thing, though - enchanted musical instruments, floating around by themselves, wandering out of the city into someone's farmland. There would be cash rewards for the instruments' safe return.

But some of these instruments were heavy. Madeline couldn't carry too many of these things to the store by herself at one time. So she would need some help. Someone with muscle.

So, Madeline and Shir got off the bus stop together, deep in the agricultural center of Manta Carlos. It was a bright, beautiful day out - for the most part. One of the farms had a miniature thunderstorm brewing over itself - and exclusively over itself, with unnaturally low-lying clouds roiling just above it. It was an island of dark, windy cold in the middle of a bright summer's day.

Madeline smiled up at Shir and put on the raincoat she brought. "I told you we'd need raincoats," she said.

"We should hurry. I think rain is bad for instruments." She would take a hold of Shir's hand and drag him across the road, straight towards the storm.

Shir heard about the instruments on the loose. God this place was freakin weird with its happenings, especially lately. It just felt like something was amiss. He couldn't explain it but there's no way the graduation incidents weren't connected somehow. He had no clue why they needed freakin rain coats until they arrived and he saw the storm.

"Welp, I'm not even gonna ask questions anymore. I'm gonna take your word for it with this stuff," Shir threw on his raincoat and let Maddie lead for now. He was sort of taking in the scenery, he'd actually never been out this way before. "Wait do you have something to cover it up?"

Madeline just shrugged. "I guess I didn't think that far ahead. It'll work out though." She was certain of it.

As they walked towards their destination, they would notice something strange. A corn stalk uprooted itself right next to them and fell over. Then, moving like a snake, it slithered away deeper into the farmland.

"Well, that happened... must be easier than having to go through and chop all the plants down, I guess." This place was weird.

They would reach a T-intersection in the road. Straight ahead was a different farm, not the one with the storm over it, but in the way. Madeline would keep going straight ahead, leading Shir right onto the farm. "Let's cut through here," Madeline said.

Shir was following along alright. He trusted Maddie enough to know she probably knew what she was doing. But then, a fucking corn stalk just got up and slithered away. Just... what? Why did it feel like he was more weirded out by this than his girlfriend? Had she perhaps gotten more accustomed to this place than him?

"Maddie, I need to know," he said as they moved to cut straight through. "Are you bottling up the fact that that was fucking weird as hell, or are you just fine with it?"

They were heading into another field of corn. They could feel the wind from the storm ahead on their faces. It blew through the field, and from a distance the field looked like it had waves, like an ocean.

"It was pretty weird," she agreed. "But not as weird as hell. I was there." Madeline stopped for a moment and turned around.

"Maybe it's just harder to get me shaken up now. Some of the stuff I saw down there..."

She wanted to talk about it with someone. Someone who wasn't a demon, who could give her a sanity check. But it would be scary saying these things to Shir. What if he heard about the stuff she felt and did and learned down there, and it made him hate her? So she couldn't get the words out of her mouth, she just hesitated until

"AH!"

The wind had blown an ear of corn directly into her cheek. She got terrified, and she flailed, and she slapped it away like it was an assailant. It might have been for all she knew. She'd seen one of these things move.

Admittedly Shir was a little jealous of Maddie's overall confidence that this would all work out. She wasn't even all that phased by the freaky corn slithering away. It was one of the things he liked about her. It sounded like that trip to hell might have desensitized her the weirdness here. That made sense to him, but just as she was getting into it she got hit with some corn.

"What the hell? Are you alright?"

He moved to shield his girlfriend from any further corn based attacks. Then he remembered something.

"We're basically going straight for now? I can just... scoop you and jump," he offered. He could after all jump like a cat, even in his human form.

"Jump? Like..."

Madeline pictured characters in superhero movies, jumping extraordinarily far. She imagined Shir doing that, and princess-carrying her through the air. "That sounds awesome! Let's do it." She was grinning now - she would have wanted to do this whether or not there was monster corn to worry about.

And that's when they heard it. The thump, thump, thump of heavier footsteps than any human could make. Madeline exchanged a worried glance at Shir. They would both vanish - but he would be able to feel her right next to him, ready to be picked up.

If Shir hopped up to look over the cornstalks, he would see a giant, hulking humanoid made of dirt and stone. It was heading in their general direction but not quite directly towards them.

"Just hold on tight, okay?"

Shir lifted Maddie into his arms, keeping a fairly firm grip on her. Then he took a couple steps forward, and jumped into the air. Looking down, he saw what appeared to be a golem, heading their way. The source of all that noise. Shir jumped again the second they landed. He wanted to put more distance between them and that golem.

"I think we should be alright?" he looked back. "Maybe?"

They weren't.

The two barely made a sound when Shir jumped and landed. They were invisible. Any corn stalks that they disturbed didn't appear to move. And yet, the golem was still following them. Every time they landed and jumped again, the golem would seem to melt into the ground, and soon it would pop back up out of the ground right where they had just taken off.

"I can stop him," Maddie said. She was trying to keep her voice down, but she was clearly freaked out.

Next, Shir would hear something strange. Words that seemed to seethe with power and malice. It sounded almost like Maddie - they came from Maddie's lips, but they didn't sound like the girl Shir knew.

"Yie meh ithie'li si vsirh sizisiri."

The golem stopped following them. It stood in place for a moment, then sat and curled up into a fetal position. It wouldn't be causing them any more trouble for a while.

Madeline's grip on Shir would tighten.

It was probably some weird security golem. Hopefully. Maybe. Shir looked at Maddie nervously, unsure of what she did. Was that a spell? When did she pick that one up? Shir looked back at the curled up golem.

"I wanna ask, but we probably don't have time. Where are we going?" he asked. His tail flicked, and he'd head in whatever direction she pointed in. God was he hoping this whole adventure would be worth it.
