Zora raised an eyebrow at the Rory comment. She looked at Jude then, thought about Rory, and nodded. She could easily see them together. They sort of complemented each other.

"Yes, maturity is an important thing. But so is attraction as well as shared experiences, interests, a willingness or need to learn from one another... things like that are important too. Though I must admit a 16-year-old with a 100 year doesn't really make much sense. " Zora remarked thoughtfully.

"And no, a 14-year-old is probably a little too young for you. They'd have little life experience probably or you'd just not have a lot in common, is my guess" Zora remarked casually as she took a drink of her white wine.

It was a moment of honesty that made Jude say what he said next, an admission that felt like an admission of guilt just saying it out loud.

"I think that's what makes Broen appealing," Jude said, his tone like that of a confession. "Broen knows stuff. I think it'd be hard to be with anyone who didn't know anything about where I'm from, who didn't know any of the people I knew. Being around Broen or anyone from my group feels... relaxing. Like I'm at home. I need to get outside my own social circle, and... meet new people."

"I can definitely understand why you like him, Broen is very smart..." Zora agreed, she had found out that about him along the way, and it had surprised her too, but in a very good way. "it's the shared experiences common background, probably age too that helps. I know it's not his shiny personality that got you..." Zora laughed as she winked at Jude playfully.

"If I were honest, and this is just speculation as to why I may have seen his face in the scrying pool..." Zora started, still not ready to actually admit to herself her feelings for him, "And if I had feelings for him that is..." she added for good measure.

"The reasons may have been, beyond the physicality of it - which is also amazing, "Zora stated as she looked at her glass, "Is that he accepts me for who I am, he doesn't judge me and just gets who I am. I also admire his drive and confidence, and need to see things through wherever they may take him," she said as she thought about her bodyguard.

"It's not even his looks that attract me to him... it's himself, what makes him who he is, the person behind all that brash, often rude, outspoken and certainly in your face behavior," she said with the faintest of smiles.

Oh god. Jude was only barely able to contain his groan of pain as Zora explained to him all the reasons she liked Broen. Yes, yes, he was good at sex and really confident and driven and all that stuff, but the whole person behind all that brash behavior thing was too much.

Way too much.

"Okay," Jude said, reaching up to pinch his nose as he mentally ran through the entire gymnastics routine to convince himself that Broen wouldn't get mad at him for saying. He probably would, being honest with himself, but considering that Jude was doing it to hopefully stop Zora from maintaining her feelings that Broen definitely didn't want...

Well, he'd have to get over it.

And it was Jude's story to.

"Alright," he said again. "How much do you know about the school? Was it ever mentioned to you?" Jude was betting on no. Broen and Zora were too busy fucking all day to sit down and have a conversation about this sort of thing, which meant if he didn't, she was never going to realize that Broen wasn't just a dashingly roguish guy with a secret heart of gold that you just needed to work to reach.

"The school?" Zora said and then shook her head, "No, it was never mentioned to me. I can't say I have much to do with that. Maybe the odd donation here and there to some school event, but aside from that, I don't follow school happening..." she admitted as she looked at Jude wondering what was bothering him - he seemed rather uncomfortable.

The school. No, not that school, but he really should have expected it. It didn't really matter. The fact that her brain didn't jump to the school that makes you evil? was more than telling enough.

"No, not that one," Jude said. "Back in the world we came from, me and Broen both got picked up by the same supernatural school. It was evil. I'm not even going to say the name. But long story short, you went to class, and then that class... chipped away at who you were. The good in you. Your empathy. Your ability to care about people. And you could feel it as it did. The worst feeling in the whole world. That's how I met him. Only I spent a few hours there. And he... was there a lot longer. I know you're probably thinking that he's rough and tumble, but deep inside he might care, but..."

Jude frowned. Really, his whole expression, his demeanor... it was all dark. He was trying his best to be very, very serious about it, to impress upon Zora how serious the whole thing was.

"He doesn't. And he can't. He can't manage those things."

As far as Jude was concerned, him and the other Defiant were at the top of Broen's mental scale, which was still about sixty miles down from where he placed himself. I'd sell you to Satan for one cornchip, in other words.

Zora listened quietly to Jude talk, trying to process all that he told her. The school, the chipping away at empathy, everything, and then she thought about Broen. It seemed plausible what Jude was telling her - it would explain a lot about him... except for a few things, things most might not notice. And a few of those things were - Zora had seen and felt Broen's anger, irritation, seen the exasperation and frustration written on his face for things she had done or said.

In fact, they had spent enough time together that she knew what Jude meant by not caring - but she also knew about empathy. She was not empathic herself, but others in her family had been - her own mother for one. And if it were a total lack of empathy - he'd be totally indifferent to everything, there would be no anger, no reaction to those around him, nothing. And this fact, only made things a tad more confusing, but it was also something she chose to not comment on and keep to herself for some reason.

"So you are saying he lacks empathy, understanding of those around him, no?" Zora asked gently.

Jude was pretty sure that on the island, exempting Broen himself, he was pretty unique qualified to talk about the school. It hadn't effected him. Not in the way it had effected Broen. But it almost had, and he'd felt it chipping away at him.

"No," Jude said. "He can understand. He knows when you're crying that you feel sad. He can read the emotions of other people. But they don't reach him. He knows, but he doesn't care. He doesn't feel about them. He can't."

It wasn't a choice. It wasn't even really a part of him. But it was a part of what had been done to him--and very nearly been done to Jude.

Jude's words only confirmed what Zora was now beginning to suspect. The explanation told her a lot, explained even more about Broen, but not everything. If anything, Jude had piqued her interest greatly with his revelation, though she hid that from him behind a look of impassivity.

"Would you say that Broen is emotionless then?" Zora asked evenly as she took a sip of her almost empty wine glass.

"No," Jude said without even a moment's hesitation. "He still has emotions. He has all the emotions you and I have. He has tons of those. He just doesn't care about other people the way someone else might. He can laugh and cry and be annoyed just the same as everyone else, but he doesn't care about people."

Jude let out a sigh, pinching at his nose. He didn't like talking about it. He felt exhausted. The whole thing just felt patently hypocritical.

"I just... I am telling you this so you don't think you can change him. So you don't think there's an ooey gooey center where, if you reach it, you'll realize he really does care about you. Because you won't. Even if he wanted to, he couldn't. He can't."
