Masami had set everything up for today - and it was going to be a real pain in the ass. He had no way of knowing if he'd survive this process or if he'd be the same person when he came out the other side. Being heated to forging temperatures would render him inert, and that was the best thing that he could hope for.

Going inert wasn't bad. It was like sleeping, but deeper. He didn't feel the hammer blows or the grinding as his blade was twisted and reformed into an entirely new shape. He didn't even know how long he had been down.

All he knew when he was tempered and cooled and allowed to go back to normal, he felt... amazing. His bones didn't ache. He felt stronger, more agile. Not that he hadn't been those things, but he had never really felt them. He flexed his fingers and stretched his arms and he felt younger! This was incredible. If he'd thought that he could have gotten results this good he would have reforged himself years ago.

But... why did he reforge himself in the first place?

He had an inkling. Something about a bratty kid who swung him around like a stick. And other stuff. He had the memories, but they were all foggy and distant. Like he'd cleaned the board but the residue of the last words were still there, and you could read them still if you squinted hard enough. The first thing that came back clearly though sent him looking for a mirror. Or water. Or... a barrel of quenching oil.

Staring down in his reflection, Masami couldn't help but frown a bit. He looked... largely the same. There were differences, of course. But he could still tell that he was himself. And he didn't know how to feel about that.

Still getting his bearings, he only now seemed to realize that he wasn't alone and that he was in a forge of some kind. Of course those were true though - he couldn't have reforged himself and he couldn't have done it without the proper tools.

"...I need a drink."
