Time had gone by fast, but he supposed it often did during seasons of change. When life shifted it often seemed to speed up. It was winter now, the snow was coming down, they'd been keeping it clear best they could.

Caius was just arriving home, he'd been at the school going over a few things. He was in the process of finding an alternative place among the scouts, one that would let him stay on the island more.

He'd step into the house, hanging his coat on one of the hooks and sniffing the air. The house had been quieter since Sofia retreated into her wolf persona. They'd all given her the space she needed while also being their for her.

Sniffing the air he'd pick up that familiar scent, following it he'd find a sight he hadn't seen in a while. "Sofia?" she was in the kitchen, she hadn't been there in some time, "are you ok?"

About a month after the miscarriage, Sofia’s wolf had taken over. Her depression had sunk in so badly that the need for survival had kicked in. For the past six months or so, the wolf had been keeping them isolated, with the exception of the occasional night by Caius’s side. A majority of time was spent in the wooded areas around the house. Sofia’s wolf was not much of a conversationalist; she only communicated when necessary and spoke in short, direct sentences with simple words.

Finally, though, the time had come. The wolf could sense Sofia’s emotional recovery and relinquished her hold. Sofia had woken up that morning from what had felt like a long slumber, with only vague memories, just enough for her to know what had generally happened but with few details to go off of.

She wasn’t feeling...happy, necessarily, but she was more at peace now with the events that had transpired earlier in the year. She was seeing clearly again. Sofia wandered the silent house for a bit - everyone must have been away at school or work for the day - before setting herself to work in the kitchen. After eating raw meat for half the year, the human side of her craved some actual flavor for her palate.

Her ears and nose picked up Caius’ return to the house, but she waited for him to come to her, which he did. Sofia set aside the knife she’d been using to chop vegetables and turned to greet him with a warm smile - an expression that hadn’t crossed her face in quite some time. “Hey.”

It was good to be back.

It sounded like her, the tone in her voice was softer, kinder, he could already tell that much. "Hey," he'd say, stepping over to her and taking her hand, he even saw it in her eyes, they seemed brighter, less foggy. "It's....hmm....it's good to see you...to have you back."

Caius didn't look like he'd be one for physical affection. He was very large gruff looking man with scars and everything. Yet he actually was when he needed to be, so his arms quickly found themselves wrapped around her in a hug.

He'd hold her close for a moment, "yes, it's very good to have you back." Releasing her he'd quickly look her over, "feeling ok?" The older werewolf brushed a bit of hair from her face, "what do you remember?" she'd been the wolf for some time, he imagined the last while would be a bit fuzzy to her.

The warm contact from Caius was more than welcomed. Sofia relaxed into his arms, breathing deeply to take in his scent. He had been so patient and kind, giving her what she needed without pressing matters. Her wolf had told her that much, at least. They both loved Caius more than anything else in the world. He was their rock, their anchor, their lighthouse cutting through the fog. He gave them clarity and comfort.

She smiled up at him as he tucked some stray hairs back into place, reaching up to catch his hand so she could lean her cheek into his palm. She craved his touch. Her brow furrowed a little as she tried to remember, but most of what had happened was in a haze. "Not a lot," she told him, closing her eyes as she leaned a little deeper into his hand. "All I get are snippets, like old photographs. The woods. The moon. A stream or a clearing. Sometimes a hunt or two. No timelines, no emotions...it feels like I have been asleep for a long time."

Sofia's eyes opened to look up at her mate once again. "I'm sorry to have worried you," she offered. Hopefully the past several months hadn't put too much of a damper on their relationship.

He'd hum in thought as she explained what she remembered. She was a different kind of werewolf than him, plus she was turned, it all worked differently for her. "Your wolf side was in control for sometime," he'd gently rub her back as he spoke.

The older wolf shook his head, "it wasn't your fault, instincts and emotions make an odd mix." He knew this was why turned werewolves often struggled their first few years, the human mind needed to adapt to the wolf instincts.

Stepping back he'd look her over, she looked fine, and she sounded fine but somewhat emotionally tired. "You're back with us," he'd say with a nod and small smile, "that's what matters."

That was just another thing she loved about Caius. He was always so...understanding. It comforted her to know that he wasn't upset in the slightest over her absence.

She let him put a few inches of distance between them, though really she just wanted to curl up in his arms and stay there forever. Even a few inches felt too far away sometimes. She gave a bit of a tired smile and nodded. That was the important part, that she was back now.

"How has everything been?" she asked as she turned back to her work.

Yes she seemed physically well, he knew emotionally it would likely take some time for her to heal and get back into things. "The family is ok," he'd say with a nod, stepping close to her again, "we've all missed you though," it was true, it hadn't been the same without her.

"The island is facing a bit of a crisis though," he'd say, glancing out at the falling snow, the house and immediate area was being kept clear by magic he'd invested in but he wouldn't be able to keep that up long. "An unnatural amount of snow has been falling as of late, they believe it's caused by magic."

He'd take her hands in his, "snow or not, it is good to have you back with us." She very much seemed like a point of warmth in what was turning into a very cold winter.
