It had been an extremely hectic couple of weeks at DB Holdings and Woodland Imports as the two companies had to deal with the island going through so many big changes as well as the company itself needing to set up portals to places such as London, Barcelona, Tokyo, and Toronto so they could continue doing business with the outside world.

Furthermore, and as fate would have it, Rafael had to deal with quite a few very important, personal problems. Problems that affected not only the family as a whole but caused his granddaughter Zoraida to take some time off to be with her son, leaving him in charge of both companies.

Taking some business contracts and other papers to be filed away, Rafael caught sight of his assistant, Kal and waved him over. "Would you like to grab a bite to eat before the meeting with the MCSS this afternoon?" Rafael said as he handed the secretary the papers in question.

Even when he had no direct experience with the recent goings on in the island about the hidden academy or some other, Kal had still been indirectly affected by it. Not only in the sense that he heard rumors or was bumping into even more odd strangers. His studies were getting compromised too. To top it off, DB Holdings was undergoing a big step in improving its comunications and quick travel department. If he were to be honest, Kal would gladly choose to fight a heavyweight in the ring or undergo rigorous training rather than go through another experience like this.

Kalvin had been on his way to the break room to get a refill for his water bottle when his boss had called him over. "No problem. Let me get my jacket," he said. He smiled at the offer as he took the files amd walked them to his desk. The work may be a little tiresome but he was always glad that he was under good management. Plus, spending some downtime with Rafael is always a welcome break.

He took the old, beat up formal jacket he always walked to and from work in. He pulled it on as he made his way over to the exit where his boss waited. "You okay there?" Kal asked, noting the haggard looks of his boss. Rafael definitely seemed more stressed out than usual. If anything, this may be the worst he's seen his boss.

Rafael watched Kal grab his things while he waited patiently for him at the door. And it wasn't until they were out of the building that Rafael finally relaxed and found that he could answer Kal question.

"Truthfully, no," Rafael admitted to his assistant as a tiny hint of tiredness crept into his voice as the two of them walked across the street to the sandwich shop type restaurant.

"All this island craziness is frankly exhausting," he said as they were shown to a table by a young waiter who handed them each a menu and excused himself so they could decide what they wanted to eat.

"Between clients who are worried about their investments, our offices abroad not being able to contact us for a few days and my granddaughter just up and taking a few weeks off," Rafael remarked as he looked at the menu and frowned slightly at the choices there.

Kalvin nodded in understanding. The exhaustion of being Rafael's secretary was already overwhelming. He could only imagine what it's like managing all these problems. Not to mention the family problems he's having these last weeks. Not that Kalvin cared or listened too closely about those things. He didn't have the time between everything that's happening at work and at school.

"I can sympathize." He didn't know what else to say to his boss. He looked over the menu and decided on a triple-decker and two chicken sandwiches. He took note of the refillable coffee they had as well and decided he might get a refill or two. "How is your granddaughter?" he asked more out of politeness.

Rafael stared at the menu clearly undecided. The French roast beef dip looked good and so did the Montecristo, or the turkey club. Finally, after some debate, he decided on the roast beef along with a bowl of French onion soup to start, and coffee to drink.

"My granddaughter," here Rafael grimaced a little at the mention of Zoraida. He knew none of this was her fault, but he still was somewhat resentful that she had not watched over his great-grandson better.

"That is a whole other issue," he admitted as the waiter reappeared minutes later with their orders.

"The reason she has taken time off was because her son decided to try some very questionable magic and it backfired on him," he told Kal with a shake of his head.

"That is... unfortunate," Kalvin responded. He didn't understand the magicks problem, not really. Although, if it involved questionable magic, then he had an idea about it. Also, he had a good understanding of family drama. He also knew how heavy consequences could be for some very seemingly innocent or harmless actions. He'd made some very unwise decisions as a younger man too. "If you don't mind me asking, how old is your great-grandson? It might be that he's too young to really understand what he was getting into."

Kalvin leaned forward on the table, resting folded arms on its surface. "Even I remember my random and compulsive teenage years to be quite chaotic," he added with a hint of a fond smile on his face. And that's with a mostly normal teenager life in the Narrow Reality. "I can easily bet that a teenager blooming here may have... an even more chaotic time in Manta Carlos."

"My grandson, Jeremiah, is 17. He is no child," Rafael stated as he glanced at Kal, and held his gaze as he spoke.

"He thought he could raise the dead. It was no silly little spell. He knew exactly what he was doing. It's a very complicated and dangerous spell. Especially, if it backfires," he added with a frown.

"I wish it had been a teenage folly, Kal," he admitted a bit tiredly. "I really wish it had been..." he said with a shake of his head.

Kalvin's eyebrows rose when he heard what Rafael was so stressed out about. He wanted to reflect that 17 technically was still a young age, though he hadn't the heart to tell Rafael that, especially seeing that he was far older than Kal was.

He sat there for a while, unsure of what to say. It was then when the waiter came back with their coffees and small glasses of complimentary milk for it. Kalvin thanked him but he made no move to touch his drink yet. "I don't know a lot about magic, but I can see why this is a big problem. Did his spell backfire?"

Rafael let out a sound like a deep sigh and glanced across the table at Kal, and then nodded. "It did indeed backfire," he started as he stirred sugar into his coffee.

"And it bounced back on him and almost killed him," he confessed to his assistant as a brief look of pain crossed his normally calm or stoic features. He knew he could be a stern man at times, but his family meant everything to him.

"His mother had even been hiding this from me. I think they were afraid to tell me," Rafael admitted grimly. It felt horrible to be the last one to know. He didn't consider himself as somebody who wouldn't understand, but obviously the family thought otherwise.

"If they thought to hide it from you, then you must be lacking better communication with them," Kalvin suggested. "Something this big, this important, there's one of two things people do with it. They either hide it or share it. Ideally, as an elder, I know you'd want them to have done the latter, especially since it's a life or death situation."

He placed a spoonful of sugar in his cup and also began to stir his coffee. He then looked at Rafael again. "When I was much younger, I often got into fights. One time, I was running an errand for my mother. I was bringing home my grandfather's coin collection from their house. He had entrusted me to deliver it to my mother safely. On the way home, some kids jumped me. No matter how hard I fought back, I wasn't going to win against five bigger boys. Then they took the coin collection."

He took a deep breath and shook his head as he leaned back on his seat. "When I got home, I kept it a secret. My mother didn't know that the coins were coming home then. When my grandparents arrived for a surprise visit at the house a month later, they asked where the coin collection was. My mother was livid when she found out that I had lost it. And she was very disappointed in me for not having told her about it, too..." He trailed off, seemingly lost in thought.
