Brünhild walked down the street with a bag slung over her shoulder, containing her workout gear. She was navigating her way to a gym her co-worker had recommended, since she needed a place to exercise outside of her workplace's training room. And runs around the island could only get her that far. She needed to do different kinds of exercises to maintain balance.
Brünhild enjoyed how silent the streets were this early in the morning. It wasn't even 6am yet and it showed on a weekend. Brünhild much preferred it to Tokyo or Moscow or any other big city where people never slept. The predator in Brünhild was always anxious in that kind of environment.

Brünhild stopped for a moment to look at a cat on the side of the road, and since she didn't see shifter tags Brünhild tried to slowly approach and pet it. But as expected it hissed at her and ran away. Brünhild sighed a bit, why did she keep trying? Other smaller predators felt intimidated by her and always either lashed out or ran away. It made petting animals very hard, and somehow always made Brünhild a bit depressed.

Brünhild continued walking and checked the time. She still had about an hour before she started having muscle spasms. Just enough time for her to find the gym and start working out. In her bag Brünhild had a fitness plan she had made herself. Brünhild had stopped needing personal trainers over 30 years ago.
The gym was on a visible enough place so Brünhild didn't miss it, and the scent also hinted her that this was a facility meant for sweating.

Her co-worker had provided Brünhild with a pass, that allowed her to enter for one free trial visit. With that Brünhild entered and head to the women's dressing room. She was delighted to see the place was nearly empty, the actual rush didn't start until 7 or 8am and by then Brünhild would be done. And then she had a whole day for investigating. Brünhild was starting to become frustrated with how many shifters there were on the island, it made completing her objective challenging.
Well, Brünhild enjoyed an occasional challenge. Especially since after this kill she would finally be done and wash her hands of killing. Just that thought alone was a great motivator.

Brünhild changed her clothes in the dressing room, her workout outfit being a sturdy black workout bra, knee long dark blue sports tights, white sports sneakers and her trusty belt equipped with her water bottle and small pouch with pain medicine, a protein bar and an apple.
With that Brünhild headed to the gym area and upon arrivel checked the time. She still had 30 minutes. Just enough time to stretch. Brünhild fetched a mat and set it on a free area. She started with stretching her legs, bending her body in half from the waist and facing the floor as her thighs strained.

Dawn on the islands was always an experience. The island had a nightlife, filled with vampires and goblins and all the things that called the night home. The dusk was filled with humans and daywalkers winding down, but the dawn wasn't the same. Too many of the nightlife were harmed by the light, or at least irritated by it, so by the time the sun started peaking up over the horizon, most had already gone down for bed.

It meant quiet. It meant relaxing. And Angelo? Well, Angelo kind of needed that. Most of the time he missed the sound of a crowded house, but it could be overwhelming at times. Sometimes you just wanted to relax, and that was why, at just before six AM, Angelo--who had an actual gym in his house--was working out at a real gym.

Angelo was the sort of person who worked out regularly, and it showed. No, more than that. Someone with his weight could easily lift big weights, but Angelo was lifting big weights.

That was the nice thing about Manta Carlos Gyms: They came with a lot of specialized equipment that a normal house wasn't going to be able to manage. The normal house couldn't fit the kind of stuff he needed.

Not when you were dead-lifting two and a half tons.

Angelo took his time with it, careful to do so, and by the time he finished his routine he was good and tired. He cut his way over to the open area where people did stretches, getting ready to do his usual cool down routine.

Only it wasn't just him there. Someone else was stretching, a too familiar face, and Angelo gave a wave as he grabbed a mat of his own.

"Brunhild, right? Did I get that right?"

Brünhild closed her eyes as she brought her legs together and reached towards her toes, basically laying down on top of her legs. It was impossible for Brünhild not to pay attention to her surroundings, as her senses were always at their maximum capacity and ready to pick up any signs of threat. In all honesty it could be exhausting, and Brünhild did often suffer from sensory overload and headaches. But at least she could always close off at least one of her senses and lighten her burden by closing her eyes.
Brünhild counted seconds and heard someone approach. She didn't pay it much mind, as she thought it was unlikely she would be attacked at a public gym. Though she wanted to greet the person politely when she would get up from her stretch. Brünhild didn't catch the person's scent immediately when they walked to the same area as her, mostly because A/C was blowing from an angle that prevented the stranger's scent from reaching Brünhild properly.
Brunhild, right? Did I get that right?
Brünhild quickly opened her eyes and straightened her upper body, looking up at officer Genovese. A sergeant at Manta Carlos police department, and someone Brünhild had recently met for the first time. Though Brünhild had known of him beforehand, as her intel collection had included the names of every active officer in the force. Brünhild had memorized the names and faces of all higher rank officers.
Without missing a beat Brünhild stood up and, mostly out of habit, was in attention. Though, as officer Genovese had asked her to, Brünhild didn't salute, merely waved a bit awkwardly. Brünhild wasn't used to waving normally without it being a signal on the battlefield.
"Officer Genovese. Good morning, nice to see you. How are you?"
Brünhild nodded with a slight, nearly unnoticeable smile on her face.
"And yes, you got it right, it's Brünhild. I'm honoured you remember my name despite our brief earlier encounters."

He wasn't entirely sure what to make of the whole military thing. He'd never been in the military, and he really wasn't clear what kind of a history she had. That was the issue with the military on the island: There was no actual military, so that meant anyone who was military oriented was from a foreign military, and almost always ended up being some shade of bad. There were a lot of militaries that had made a lot of supernaturals via experimentation. It was kind of bad territory. For every one person who had a half decent history with the military, there were a dozen who'd been weapons of war.

"I'm fine," he said, giving her a grin. "Early to rise, decent time last night. Going to go in to work in an hour or so. Figured I'd work out a bit before work, help keep myself in order. Some people don't have to work out at all, but... I'm sadly not one of them. How's your morning been?"

Apparently just starting. She seemed to be doing stretches as well, only she wasn't nearly as sweaty as he was. He didn't immediately get down, preferring to stand for a moment while they handled introductions.

Brünhild had made the observation that officer Genovese seemed to be just finishing up his routine, as it wasn't that hard to spot. He was sweaty, and had the look of someone who had been doing physical exercise.
Brünhild also made the notion the man was quite casual right from the start. It always took some time for Brünhild to get comfortable enough with her conversation partner to start even smiling. And she was quite sure she hadn't grinned in years. Brünhild couldn't say she didn't envy him for that slightly. But she did try to answer his grin and did so in the form of a much more noticeable but still small smile.
"My morning has been yet short but pleasant so far, thank you for asking. I wake up every day at 5am, as my schedule requires it. And I start exercising almost immediately."
Brünhild nodded a bit, and ceased from standing in attention and adapting a more relaxed stance. Somehow it was hard to follow her militaristic ways in the company of someone relatively laid-back. But she didn't resume stretching, and she wouldn't until officer Genovese did.
"I do think I remember you mentioning you enjoy exercise, so at least it's not all that sad. If you wish to try and see it from a positive perspective. And thanks to your physical efforts you are partly able to be as good of an officer you are."

They were like night and day in a lot of ways. Brunhild was serious and stoic, the kind of person who smiled maybe once in a fortnight. Angelo, on the other hand? He smiled all the damn time. Really, his natural expression was a smile, and when he wasn't smiling, you knew something bad was happening. Even on the job he tended to smile, trying his best to be friendly and welcoming despite the situation. It helped, a lot of the time. Sometimes people underestimated him. Sometimes it helped with kids in scary situations. Kids--especially young kids--were far more likely to make a run for the friendly looking cop than the scary one.

Of all her normal conversation starters--standard enough, good morning, working out, think positive yada yada--there was one thing that really stood out, and Angelo quirked an eyebrow as he lowered himself down, throwing down the mat and opting to get back to work.

"Sorry if this is prying," he said, realizing it probably was. "But you've mentioned that a few times, right? That it was... I don't know, required you had to work out." Was that just some leftover schedule for the military? Or was there something he was missing going on? It wasn't like Manta Carlos had mandatory fitness periods or anything.

As officer Genovese threw his mat down and lowered himself on it Brünhild also resumed her stretching, checking the clock while she did. The strain that the stretching caused on her muscles bought her time before the spasms would start, and at the start they would start small. She was in no hurry. So she sat and put the bottoms of her sneakers together, still working on her legs. She was slightly surprised by officer Genovese's question, and it showed as her brows rising just a bit, but it was understandable. Brünhild had explained her condition to people before, it was something she had accepted and learned to live with. Like she had done with many, many things.
"Think nothing of it, as I don't. I do believe I mentioned I was biologically engineered. As I was a normal human originally it required a lot of modifications on my DNA before I could reach my current state."
Current state being she could lift nearly one and half tons, could run faster than a cheetah and was able to modify her eyesight to see as well a an eagle, plus some other handy perks for being the best killer she could be.
"The price I must pay for those modifications is, that if I do not follow a strict exercise schedule and meal plan my body will cave on me and stop working, I believe eventually leading to my demise."
Brünhild explained all of this in a conversational tone, her face void of any emotion except neutrality. But, as always when she talked about her state, there was a spark of anger and frustration in her eyes. Brünhild had learned to live with it. But the hate, the regret and all other feelings that being a bio-engineered killing machine, being made into one, had caused would probably never disappear.
Brünhild wasn't afraid of telling all of this to a police officer. She was very well aware that she was planning a murder of a seemingly innocent person, and that revealing weaknesses to an enemy wasn't wise. But officer Genovese would never find out she was his enemy. Brünhild was a killer, a predator. A damn good one, whether she wanted it or not. And she would be in and out and gone before the body would be even found. If it was ever.
Or at least that was Brünhild's plan for now.
"Forgive me if I dampened your morning with this, officer Genovese."
Brünhild said, there was an apologetic tone to her voice, and she lowered her head towards officer Genovese a bit.

Angelo listened intently as Brunhild explained their situation. Lab experiment, then. There were a lot of those, and it only cemented his pre-existing suspicions. The military loved lab experiments. The lab experiments themselves tended to be less enthusiastic.

"It's fine," Angelo said, waving off her concerns. "If I let myself get bothered every time I heard that kind of story, I could hardly be a cop here. The island's littered with stories like that, and at least you can take care of your own needs without having to hurt anyone else. There's a lot of people on the island who can't. Who... have to mess with others."

If he noticed the anger, he didn't comment on it. She was allowed to be angry. Lots of people were. There were precious few people on the island who could just get over it like it was nothing. Who could move on without that resentment. Even Angelo himself felt that sometimes, thinking about his father--his biological father, a reaper he'd never met. Someone who'd had an affair with his mother and then... what?

He had no idea. Run off. Died. Been called away. He didn't know, and he'd long ago given up on ever finding out.

Brünhild nodded slowly, as Angelo reassured her that he was not bothered by her explanation. Brünhild could relate, she rarely let things get to her. But nevertheless she often noticed that small, simple things stuck with her without any apparent reason. Inside her mind she wondered if officer Genovese was similar in those sentiments, but it seemed like a foolish and such a personal question Brünhild pushed it aside.
Brünhild could relate to having to..."mess" with others as well. She had never been given a choice about being a living weapon, and when she had received such a chance she had had to continue being a weapon. Yes, she could relate, very much so.
"Yes, I am lucky in those aspects, that my condition is mine to live with. And this island has gathered many unfortunate fates, I have noted that. But I have also noted that this island is very much a place of healing as well as sorrow."
Brünhild reached her arms up and brought the other one over her head, stretching her biceps,
"I hope this island can be a place for those who wish to change their fates to get a chance to do so."
There was a slightly faraway look in Brünhild's eyes as she said those words, partly not even realizing she had boiced them. Brünhild blinked once, shook her head slightly and bowed her head at officer Genovese again.
"The morning must be getting to me. That was much too personal."

The island was a place of healing. He'd never really thought about it that way, and he considered as he worked through his usual stretching routine. It was true though. The island was a place of healing.

"It's fine, really," Angelo said, in a very different place than Brunhild was mentally. She was hoping for a cure for her ills, that much was obvious, but Angelo? Angelo's ills had been cured.

"I'd go as far to say that the island already is. There's sorrow and conflict, but it's a fresh start. For a lot of people, this is the only chance they'll ever get. There's a lot of people on the island who were stuck in a horrible situation, and then the island showed up and pulled them out, and there you are, living a life you thought you could never have."

It wasn't a stretch for anyone to assume that Angelo was likely talking from experience.
