Practicing in solitude

"Nice way to think of it." He said softly, staring out the window in thought. The sun had almost set, and the sky was going from orange to purple. He didn't remember being in the room for that long, but time always seemed to move quicker when he was with someone else. When he was in a conversation he tended to focus entirely on it and forget his surroundings. There was no time to notice the minutes passing in between listening and formulating replies.

He laughed, nodding. "So would I. I'm getting all nervous playing in front of you. I mean, my piano's way off in the basement, 'cause everyone knew I got embarrassed practicing around them. I can't imagine preforming."

He blushed, ducking his head. "...You'll have to promise to try to work out the unfinished bits, eh? I still don't know how parts of it should go."
He touched his fingers to the keys, hesitantly playing the first few bars of Dorn's melody. "...And after that I don't know. It sounds like it could be played as a duet, though." He'd been watching the other boy play, but after the first few measures his attention had shifted from the actual keys to the graceful and practiced way he played them.

Dorn nodded slowly at the boys words. "Yeah it really make things easier to deal with" he replied calmly and his eyes examined the piano for another moment before he glanced towards Janes and noticed that he was looking out the window, Dorn also turned the gaze that way. He smiled as he watched the sky outside, it was a beautiful sky alright.

Dorn laughed at his words and then he calmly ruffled the other boys hair with a friendly gesture. "Then we are not very different from each other, I was nervous to play in front of you to. I did not have my piano in the basement since my parents would never let it be moved to such a place. No it was in my fathers music room. Dorn calmly made a pause and then he grinned slightly and tilted his head a little to the side. "Yet we both preformed for each otherand it worked out very nicely " he looked at the key of the piano for a moment and then he glanced over at James again and gave the boy a bright smile. "So in truth my dear Jamie, you have already done the thing you did not imagine, you have performed for me"

Dorn listened to James words as he talked and then he smiled again. "I am sure the unfinished part wont be much of a problem for you Jamie boy." he commented softly and then he watched him start playin the piece that Dorn placed a moment ago, it was really nice even if it was only a part of it. This made Dorn feel very happy actually, the boy had gotten grip of how the melody was played. "Yeah it is a duet originaly, I often played it with my father. Let´s see if we can teach you the rest of it then? Then we can play it both of us, just as it is suppose to be played." Dorn moved his hand to the key again, he began to play slowly and tried to make it so that James could see what keys Dorn used.

Jamie blushed at the other boy ruffling his hair, but it didn't startle him as much at it normally did. He was starting to get used to Dorn poking him and patting his head, he guessed. "A music room?" He'd never heard of anything like that; no one else in his family was particularly musically inclined. "Sounds nice. Don't get me wrong, though, the basement's not a bad place to practice. It's finished, eh? Like an underground study or something. All my books are down there; it's very quiet." He grew silent, a sudden wave of homesickness hitting him. It wasn't that he didn't like the Academy, but he was constantly on edge here; there was never a moment to relax and stop worrying about everything.

He leaned forward, watching Dorn's fingers intently. It was a technically difficult piece, certainly advanced, but it wasn't that hard to see the keys used. He scooted away from Dorn, so they'd both have room to play, improvising his way through the section the other boy had just played. The same basic melody, simplified somewhat. The details would be harder to learn; playing by ear was never his strong suit.

Dorn nodded a little to the other boys words. "Well that sounds nice to actually, must be a great place to go to for some time to juse be alone. Well our music room is in a small building that is not really a part of the house, mom wanted it there so she she could plant flowers and make it more beautiful. Much glass so it is not very private in that part, but it´s okey since it is on the back of the house." he explained calmly, he sighed a little and shook his head. He really did miss home now that he thought about it, yeah and he missed moms cooking, the fun he always had with Nikki when they where kids, he always kicked the other boys ass when they played video games. "We have a basement to, but none have been down there since my dad died, he was the one that used it most since he had his small projects down there....I actually never knew what he worked with before he died...we never checked it out." now that he thought about it, why had they never gone down into the basement? It made no sense really....but he did not think more about that matter now.

Dorn´s eyes glanced over at James when he joined into the playing, yeah he did know how to play really. James was good at this and it made Dorn happy that he could play this melody with someone again. His blue eyes then returned to the keys and his own moving hands, but he knew this one by heart so he could also look how it was going for his friend. "Hey your quick to learn Jamie boy" he commented with a bright smile.

"Sounds nice," he agreed, trying to imagine the building Dorn described. Probably brighter then a basement, at least.

He frowned, tilting his head to the side in thought. How long ago had Dorn's father died? It seemed odd to never once go down and see what his projects were. Then again, he was a rather nosy person; perhaps Dorn was less curious about such things. He shrugged it off, turning his attention back to the piano.

He shrugged one shoulder, pausing a second to glance over at Dorn's hands. "It's not that hard. Just the basic idea; it'd sound stupid if you weren't playing too," he said truthfully. Although he was proud of his playing, he was also careful not to take credit he didn't think he deserved.

Dorn laughed at James words and he slowly shook his head, but he continued to play as if nothing really. "No Jamie, you give yourself far to little credit." he said calmly and glanced over at the boy from a corner of his eye. "I am sure it would sound very good if I stopped playing right now to."

Dorn did not say anything for a while and he just continued to play until the melody was finished, then she slowly removed the hands from the keys and placed them on his legs. He nodded a little before he turned the head so that he looked at James. "So how have things worked out for you around the school so far?" he asked calmly, he was curious to know if his friends was doing okey. He thought for a moment. "Hey Jamie, what you say if we should try and pay a visit to the city and see if there is anything fun there sometime? I am sure there has to be something fun on this island then to just read, who knows if there are some nice shops, or maybe there are some nice move or something." he smiled brightly.

When they finished playing, Jamie scooted back on the seat, balling up the ends of his hoodie in his hands and kicking his legs. The last few rays of light were slowly slipping away, and he was thinking about how he'd probably have to turn on the light soon, how he'd give Dorn his sheet music when they got back to the dorms.

He turned his head almost imperceptibly at Dorn's question, not answering right away. "I'm doing okay, I guess. Classes aren't that hard. I haven't broken anything yet." He grinned lopsidedly, propping himself up with his hands between his legs. "Actually, my power hasn't been giving me much trouble since my first day."

He blushed, ducking his head shyly at the offer. "That'd be fun. I haven't been off school grounds since I picked up my suitcase last week, so it'd be nice to get out." A pause, and then, nervously, even though Dorn had been the one to suggest it: "If you want to, I mean."

Dorn listened to the words and he nodded at them, yeah he had not thought less then that actually. James was very bright and a smart person. He was going to do just fine, but he needed to come out from that shell he created. Dorn actually did feel honored that the boy was calm and did feel comfortable around him. "No classes are not hard, I am glad it is going well for you in the classes Jamie. I said you where going to do fine when we where down at the beach. I was right about that" he also nodded to the comment about the powers. "Well it is nice you have not had to much problem with your powers, but I am not surprised about that actually." he made a pause and looked at the piano for a moment, then he tilted his head to the side and let the finger move across the keys for a moment, but he did not press any of them.

Dorn grinned happily as the boy accepted the offer. "Of course it will be fun." he said and then he frowned a little and this was followed by a friendly laugh and he placed his arm over the other boys shoulders. "Of course I want to Jamie, would I have asked you if you wanted to come if I did not want you with me?" he sighed, but it was an amused happy sound. "Actually I have not been of the grounds more then once, but then I was alone and I have a feeling it could be really fun to do something fun just the two of us, besides I know very little about you so it will be a great time for us to get to know each other better Jamie boy."

Jamie ducked his head, fiddling with the hem of his shirt. "Well, I still can't actually do anything with it... I just haven't knocked anyone over with a book or a vase or something yet." But still, it was nice to have someone who was so convinced that he wasn't the failure he considered himself to be, someone who believed he would turn out okay in the end.

He blushed furiously at Dorn casually slinging his arm across his shoulders, but he didn't start or spring off the bench as he usually would have done. It was still a strange idea that someone would be interested in spending time with him alone, without a buffer or someone else to talk to. He wasn't exactly the best at conversation... "Okay," he finally said, growing a little excited about the idea. "But you might be disappointed... There's really not that much to know about me."

Dorn laughed a little and shook his head, "Well it is a great start Jamie boy. I know you ill be able to control your powers in no time.....just give it some....time" he frowned a little as he said these words and then he laughed a little again and ruffled his own hair with his free hand. "I know your power is known to be rather complicated to use for most people, in a way you are very good at it for your young age."

He noticed the red color in the other boys face and it made him smile a little, James really was a great person and a really nice guy to be with. He just needed to find that out for himself. The boy shook his head slowly at the words James said. "I am sure there is many interesting things to know about you Jamie boy, and I am sure you will find out about that for yourself before that day is over." he was honest, Dorn was after all the kind of person that would find a great interest in things others would not find as interesting, he could also feel that the boy was getting more excited so he was happy that what they where going to do made James happy. He looked over to one of the windows and frowned a little as he noticed that the sun was close to gone now. "Maybe we should move back to our room now Jamie boy, before it gets to late and there is a new wonderful day tomorrow to. Would not want to miss it"
