Havoc listened intently as Nix went over things, nodding along. He considered asking if the 'friend' was just a 'friend' (a topic that seemed to come up an awful lot in the military), but decided against it.
"No," Havoc said. He didn't have a favorite anything, except perhaps for a favorite gun. Scratch that--he had a favorite knife too. Really, he had a favorite for things with direct utility and easily weighable pros and cons. He had favorites, but he didn't have real preferences. If something was entirely the same, he didn't care.
"I can get some," Havoc said, not waiting for a response as he stood, heading to his room before returning with a stack of paper. It wasn't quite a notebook--just a literal stack of computer paper--but at least Havoc wasn't skimping on supplies.

"Haha, wow." Nix chuckled as Havoc returned with a stack of printer paper. While not what he'd expected, he could work with that - sure, it was good draft paper, but it fit the scale to a tee, and whatever design he put on would look like a final copy. He hoped so, at least. "Thanks. Uh. Okay. So, no favorite colors... Hm - OH." Nix was struck with an idea so simple and so easy that he was amazed he hadn't thought of it in the first place. Quickly, he grabbed a pen and a spare protractor from his bag (he had NO idea how it got there, but he was going to use it) and began to draw little boxes around the words, filling some in the corners, leaving others blank. Yes, the design was a little rough, but he just kept on working. Once you had an idea, you had to follow through, no matter what. A wide, triumphant grin lit his eyes up as well as his expression.

Havoc leaned over ever so slightly, watching Nix work as he did. He didn't have an artistic bone in his body, but he wasn't completely helpless--he'd graduated high school and it's mandatory basics-of-art courses just fine, receiving decent marks for the technical and awful marks for everything else.
"To draw the eye?" Havoc guessed, trying to follow the logic. It was simple enough, but he supposed it would be eye catching.
Or at least it was to him, only he had no faith that his preferences were in any way similar to the preferences of others.
"Should it have a graphic as well, or just the font... addition?" Havoc said, unclear as to how he was supposed to describe the styling.
It also occurred to Havoc that Nix was doing for free what others would do for cash, and he paused to consider it for a moment before deciding to simply ask.
"Should I be paying you for this?"

"Yeah, it's an eyecatch. Drawing the eye, but keeping your signature professionalism." If that was the right word. He chuckled."There's not gonna be a lotta color, not really. Most of the other posters go for, like, neon colors and shit. Yours? We wanna stay away from that, make it more you-ish. Professional looking." He scribbled a few notes in the new margins he'd drawn, and turned back to look at his roommate. "Yeah, actually, that's a good idea - having a graphic. Something to tie it together." Nix doodled a little on the back, playing around with shapes and stuff.
And then he stopped and looked up at Havoc.
"Dude. Ya don't have to pay me, y'know. I'm coin' this because I like to help and you're my roommate. And y'know. Stuff like that. Don't worry about it, okay?" He grinned. "'Sides, I plan on getting' a job real soon."

An 'eyecatch'? Havoc hadn't heard the term before, but he filed it away just the same. It was a distraction, only it was distracting people into focusing on the distraction itself.
Havoc nodded along to the discussion about a graphic, and when Nix confirmed that he didn't have to pay, frowned ever so slightly.
"Why don't you run?" Havoc asked, genuinely curious as to why. "You're qualified, and while there's a large amount of competition for the presidential spot, there isn't much focus on auditor or treasurer."
Or secretary, he supposed, but he didn't want to offend Nix by attaching him to the position.
"It wouldn't be a paid job, but it would look good on a resume, and on the island everyone would be familiar with the council and how it works."
That was assuming he was looking for a job on-island, after all.

Nix stood there for a second, contemplating... "Huh. Yeah, you've got a point. But uh... I'm no good at auditing (whatever the hell that is) or math... Secretary could work pretty good though. Lotta writing." A smirk. "Strong point for me, kinda. Bug then I'd have to make posters and stuff, and my own logo... And I dunno if I could even help you anymore. Not to mention all the time it'd take up." That wasn't to say, of course, that he wasn't curious... Or interested. Or actually, now that he thought about it, totally willing to do it - if it many he could still help Havoc out. "Does secretary still look good on resumes?" he asked, a little unsure as he finished the basic design for Havoc's poster.

"Auditing is overseeing the council, effectively. They ensure that the changes made by the council are acted on and seen through to the end. But if you'd like to be the secretary, I would support you being so. There'd be no issue with us both running, and it would be easy enough to put up two posters instead of one." Side by side, in other words. Havoc already had a decent enough start, and even if Nix was entering the race late, he had an excellent chance of coming in.
Havoc nodded in answer to his question.
"Any student council position would look good on a resume. Normally it wouldn't look very impressive, but on a small island such as Manta Carlos, where many of the islanders are alumni of the school, being a part of the student council almost definitely carries a level of prestige you wouldn't find on the mainland."
Havoc didn't know that for sure, but he felt it was a pretty good chance of being that way.
He should probably admit that though.
"Or so I assume," Havoc pointed out. "I've never had to get a job here, but it seems highly likely it would work that way. It works similarly in the military. Military prestige carries little weight in civilian life, while in the military it can mean a great deal."

"Oh jeez. That's super cool!" Nix exclaimed at Havoc's explanations of auditing and how school council in general worked - and then it clicked. It all made sense. Havoc was a soldier. That realization really did make a lot of sense. Why he knew so much about the army, why he didn't really have preferences, everything. Oh. It also explains the scar on his cheek... Nix nodded quickly, snapping out of thought land. "Yeah. Okay, sure - I might run, actually. Might." Again, he wasn't sure. Should he....? To run or not to run, he thought with a laugh, that was the question.

It had simply never occurred to Havoc that he'd never actually told Nix he was a soldier. To him, it was obvious. Everyone should have been able to figure it out. But then he was used to being around soldiers, and he was used to figuring out if anyone else was a soldier, and in a lot of ways he simply assumed that everyone else had that skill as well.
"You should," Havoc encouraged. "It would be good to have you on council." It seemed like a pretty safe bet that he would make it onto the council, and having a familiar face there would be convenient. There was strength in numbers, and Havoc was used to working in groups anyway.

"... Yeah, I guess it'd be nice to work beside you guys," he shrugged. "I mean, hell. What's the worst that could happen, huh? I'll give it a shot." With that, he handed Havoc the finished design for his poster. "Tell me if it needs anything else. You can just fill in the boxes with little bullet points of your issues and stuff."
