A small hill overlooked the lake, providing a wonderful view of the lake, sparkling with moonlight, and the clear twinkling of stars.
Veronica was lounging near the top, shoes kicked off and toes digging into the soft grass.

She wasn't there for the view, of course. Even if she'd been able to see it, she wasn't one to be affected by such things, and the most she'd allow it was a disdainful glance in the general direction of the lake.
No, she was there for the quiet the lake possessed in the middle of the night, and it was that silence that softened her face and made her look almost kind for once in her life. Her sunglasses were hanging on the collar of her purple tank top, and her cane thrown on the grass beside her.
A smile twitched across her face, and stayed there, however unnatural it looked against the girl's hardened features. She was happy, and she almost wished there was someone around she could share the rare emotion with.
No one like the handful of students she'd already met, of course. No, the half a dozen giggly females and shy males made her want to shoot herself - or rather, shoot them. But there had to be one interesting person in a school the size of Starlight, and Veronica found herself wishing that that person would hurry up and introduce himself before she died of stupidity.

She sighed, brushing her bluish black hair from her eyes. She knew that asking for someone intelligent in this school was asking for a miracle, and she doubted that would happen any time soon. She braided a lock of hair between her fingers, sightless blue eyes staring hopelessly up into the sky.

Amy saw Veronica sitting alone. She started to head up there. She too was tired of allthe giggling and the super talkative people. She reached the girl and sat down beside her. "Hello. I'm Amy." she said simply, waiting for a response.

I take it back! Make her go away! Veronica sighed, wondering what another person was doing out at the lake in the middle of the night. "Hello, I suppose." The only reason she could think of was to be alone, and the girl wasn't exactly doing a wonderful job of that. "I'm Veronica."

She nodded but said nothing as she stared out across the lake. I did want to be alone... But I don't have many friends here... Should I try to talk to her or leave her be?

Veronica raised her eyebrow at the girl's silence, mirroring it for a few minutes and finally glancing over at her. "So. Why're you out here at-" She paused, pressing a button on her black wrist watch and listening as it filled in the rest of the sentence. "Nine. Fifty. Eight. P.M." Sure, she could have just felt where the hands were pointing, but it was so much more fun the other way...

Amy laughed a bit. "Thats a cool watch. Well, I'm out here because I couldn't sleep. So many memories... They weigh you down sometimes." She turned and stared at the girl. She resprected her in a strange way. Maybe it was how the girl carried herself, or how well she seemed to carry her tough circumstances.
