If one was to look at the selkie, they’d think she’d be right at home on the deck of a pirate ship.
However, she’s in a bar.

Ailbhe was sitting at a booth, downing another bottle of whatever alcohol she grabbed this time. She wasn’t the only one at the booth. She kind of just barged in and no one had the nerve to ask her to leave.

She leaned back and put her boots on top of the table, taking another gulp. “You know?!” She suddenly exclaimed. “I... was a pirate. Ya know?” She was speaking quite loudly.

She pulled a lopsided grin. “I stooole from loads of arrogant pricks, I did. Killed a few too. Don’t ya know??!” She cackled. “Theeey... had it comin’.” She took another gulp of her drink, paying little to no mind that she was speaking loud enough that a decent amount of people would be able to hear her.

Someone had robbed the place earlier. Nothing big or fancy, but when people threatened to do stuff, the correct answer was to hand over the money and let the cops sort it out. If someone said they could kill everyone in the bar with their mind? They might very well be able to.

So they'd handed over the money, called the cops, and then reopened for business. Someone making off with a few hundred out of the register wasn't enough to stop business.

So Angelo had showed up, checked the security tapes, and got on with his business, and around the time he emerged from the back room, he was pretty much ready to leave.

Right up until the owner scooted over for him, speaking under his breath to Angelo.

"There's a woman with her feet on the table, and she's... a bit too drunk. We're not quite at the point of kicking her out, but can you ask her to keep it down?"

Of course. It really wasn't Angelo's job, but depending on how she responded, it could end up being his job, which meant it was time for him to do exactly that, striding up to the table where the woman sat.

"Ma'am, could I talk to you for a moment?"

"Eh?" Ailbhe turned to look at Angelo slowly, still pulling a grin. She took her feet off the table and took another swig. She then slammed the bottle down on the table. It didn't smash, she just kind of put it back down on the table hard.

She stood up, wobbling as she did so. Even where she stood, she swayed ever so slightly as she looked at Angelo. "Goooood evening officer." She slurred with a pleasant smile. She had one hand placed on the table to keep herself steady.

She put her other hand on the table and leaned against it. "I'm not in trouble, am I?" She pouted. "Ooooh, I'm being loooud. Aren't I?" She giggled slightly as she nodded.

Angelo cringed as she slammed the bottle down. She was... drunk. Really drunk. The owner might have underestimated just how drunk she was due to keeping away from her, but up close and personal? She was super drunk. She smelled of it, and she was swaying and slurring and good lord.

"Could I ask you to come over here and speak to me for a moment?" Angelo said, gesturing away from the table. No one at the table seemed all that interested in Ailbhe sticking around, but then it still wasn't polite to have that sort of conversation around them. Better to be in private as much as was possible without literally dragging her into the back room.

He wasn't entirely clear she was even going to be able to make it there.

"And yes, you are being loud."

Ailbhe pushed herself from the support that was the table. She walked and swayed unstably with each step she took. However, it was evident she was doing it in an exaggerated manner. Although part of it wasn't genuine, she was still pretty unstable anyway.

She briefly spun to look at Angelo, staggering as she stopped her spin. "What do you need me for, officer?" She grinned pleasantly as she placed her hands on her hips. She clicked her fingers for a few moments, holding up a finger on her other hand like she was trying to remember something.

She suddenly stopped with a quiet giggle. "You're gonna tell me to be quiet, aren't ya?" She put her finger over her lips and did a shushing motion. She went into a short giggle fit afterwards but did seem like she was still listening.

It was really, really hard to figure out just how drunk she was. She was swaying, but part of it seemed like an act, but he could smell the alcohol on her breath, so it wasn't all faked.

"You've been pretty loud since I got here," Angelo said, careful not to throw anyone under the drunk bus with his words. "And you've been boasting about..."

Angelo paused, for the first time considering her outfit. He'd assumed it was an elaborate costume, but even with what little he'd heard.

"...Boasting about piracy?"

He didn't sound certain about that at all.

Ailbhe grinned and giggled. She crossed her arms, swaying still. But, at the mention about piracy, she seemed to appear to be a bit more stable. She nodded with a lopsided grin. "Yup, I was talking about piracy."

She had this smug look to her face, like she knew Angelo would probably squint at her after saying that. "Don't you worry, officer. It was before I came to the island..." She smiled. "Pardon, and all..." She sounded so smug as she said that. There wasn't a regular smile or grin on her face now. Just a shit-eating smirk.

She then returned to her grin and swaying. "Oh! But don't worry, it's all behind me now! Cross my heart!" She said this while she did a cross motion over her chest.

He definitely squinted. No two ways about that. Not after she confessed to... piracy.

Piracy. Not like music piracy or TV piracy. Actual piracy. And when she oh-so-casually mentioned the pardon, Angelo's mood darkened even further.

"I'm sure it is," Angelo said. "But you should remember that not everyone's really keen on the kind of person who'd commit murder, robbery, and take hostages, so you might want to keep that down, beyond the volume of your voice."

Talking loudly was bad enough. Talking loudly about past crimes? Well, that was a thing too.

"Pardon will keep the Manta Carlos Government from taking you to task, but it won't stop people from judging you."

Ailbhe listened to Angelo patiently, lightly humming with a gentle sway. She had this perfectly content smile on her face, despite what Angelo was saying to her. "Well, I quite enjoy telling people of my past endeavours, officer." She sounded perfectly honest.

She casually looked around for a moment, as if her attention was now starting to waver. She looked back at Angelo. "I understand that people will judge me, but you see..." She tapped her chin as if she was pondering in thought for a while. "I really don't care." She'd say with a shrug and a brief laugh.

She started humming again as she once again gently swayed where she stood.

Well, that was her prerogative, wasn't it? Angelo didn't like her, and he was sure most of the other patrons at the bar didn't either, but it wasn't actually illegal to boast about the illegal things you'd done. It would just make people skeptical of you. I'd just make people hostile. Angelo had experience with that, and that was without actually boasting. Word got around, people'd judge you based on that word, and he couldn't help but feel that Ailbhe would figure that out the hard way sometime soon.

"Alright ma'am," Angelo said carefully. "Just remember to keep your voice down so you don't disturb other patrons." That was the only warning he could really give. Don't bother other people.

Assuming she didn't argue, Angelo'd give the barkeeper a quick nod and then head out himself.
