Stefan listened closely as Mathos talked, not out of paranoia but out of curiosity. He wanted to get a little more insight into Zora's business life, something Stefan mostly tried to stay out of and let her do her own thing.

"She is excellent at what she does."

The comment, while on the surface was still professional, could be taken other ways. Stefan had decided to toss it out to see what kind of man Mathos was and if he might lighten up from his business nature.

"Then again, your assistant seemed very capable in her own right."

He recalled how diligent she had seemed while handling issues that came up during the party, never letting a thing get back to Mathos and ruin his evening.

"You mean, Ms. Cromwell, Levina?" Mathos supplied when Stefan asked about his assistant.

"Yes, she is extremely competent at what she does. Levina's a great asset to the company and Immortal is lucky to have her. She makes sure that everything run smoothly," he explained amicably.

Stefan smiled as Mathos spoke, professionally still, about his assistant. So he was aware of all the things she did to shield him from issues. That was good. She seemingly worked hard and deserved the recognition for it. He just wondered if Mathos was aware of how forward she was.
"It seems that way. She also seems rather, uh, friendly."
Stefan just left the comment there. He wasn't wanting to offend Mathos, but it did get a little awkward with how she acted with him in front of both her boss and Zora.
"So how long have you been on the island?"
An innocent enough question. It was mainly to try to change the subject and keep the friendlier banter going.

Mathos caught the "friendly" comment and cocked an eyebrow at that. In fact, he was going to continue asking about, what sounded like Levina hitting on Zora's boyfriend, when Stefan seemed to defly change the subject. Something that also did not go unnoticed and fuelled Mathos's suspicions.

"Not too long," Mathos said. "A few months," he replied as he nodded at a customer that walked by them.

"I decided that it was high time to make the jump," he explained. "Manta Carlos allows me to live more freely than on Earth. I can magic myself a cup of coffee and nobody bats an eye here," he explained as they moved towards the till.

"It definitely has its perks here. It's closer to how home is, without all the barbarism that goes hand in hand with norse heros."
He merely shook his head at the thought. The amount of times fights broke out because someone sat too close to them was way too high for what the act was.
"Was this something you did before you moved here? Or was the move a good excuse to finally do it?"
Stefan kept his questions honest and genuine. There was no need for him to try to lead them to anything. The demi-god was just curious about a man who had shown them great hospitality.

"Where is home for you?" Mathos enquired as he looked at Stefan very curiously while sidestepping and deflecting the question about him and his past, at least for the moment.

"Because that honestly sounds more like a fighting arena," he pointed out good-naturedly as he desperately tried to remember if his sister had told them exactly who she was dating. Stefan appeared to be more important than Mathos had given him credit for.

Stefan put on his lopsided grin when Mathos asked the specifics of where his home was. A fighting arena was a fair assumption and honestly not far off most of the time.
"The great meadows of Fólkvangr. Home of the Goddess Frejya. My mother."
In that small moment, Stefan actually felt a sense of pride in where he came from. Not embarrassment as he had before. He hated being only known as Frejya's son, but he had started learning that he wasn't just that, but it was still an important part.

Thomas did a double-take, clearly surprised when Stefan told him where he was from and who was his mother.

"That explains quite a lot then. Family get-togethers must be quite an adventure," he said, forcing himself to smile, and continue the conversation even though the news that sister had landed herself a god. A fuckin' Norse god no less soured Mathos mood considerably.

The irony of this was not lost on Mathos either as he remembered darkly his sister and her teenage tryst with a dark elf when she was at a boarding school in Norway.

"That's a great way to describe feasts at Sessrúmnir. You get a bunch or drunken norse warriors, Valkyries, and gods together....well... you get the picture."

There was no way to really tell someone what the great feasts were like there without them experiencing it. That reminded him. He still needed to get in touch back home and fill them in on Stefan bringing a guest on his trip back.

"But family is family right? Gotta love 'em."

Stefan chuckled a little at the statement, the irony of the statement lost and unknown to him.

Mathos shook his head and grimaced a little at the description of the family get-togethers at Sessrúmnir.

"That sounds like an extremely interesting way for a family to bond," he admitted as he gazed at Stefan with quiet curiosity. He was not sure what to make of his rival. He seemed friendly enough, harmless even. Mathos could imagine his sister easily wrapping him around her little finger.

"Actually, I'm adopted," Mathos lied. "So, the gotta love family thing is a little lost on me," he explained, deciding a lie was better than trying to explain or justify any other view.

"Well, here we are," Mathos said when they were at the checkout. "I'm afraid I must be getting back to work, Stefan. It has been a pleasure though," Mathos said as he held his hand out to Stefan to shake.
