Name: Penelope “Penny” Scrivyn
Age: 17
Birthday: April 23rd
Gender: Female
Species: Human
Category: Student
Class: High School
Grade: Junior/11th grade

Appearance Description: Penny stands at five feet five inches tall with a slim, not quite skinny physique. Her olive complexion is framed by dark brown hair and set with two chocolate brown eyes that are often downplayed behind the corrective lenses of her glasses. She favors simple, loose clothing like t-shirts and cardigans.

Personality Description: This girl is a total book worm. She spends her days idling away in some story somewhere and has always been this way. This means that Penny is easily distracted and has been known to miss entire conversations while reading. She's obviously well spoken but tends to let others do the talking in most situations. Penny is at her best when drenched in a story and can talk for hours about them but finds that outside of her own little world, things become difficult to focus upon. Too much of her personality depends on the latest book that she's read as she tends to mimic the personalities of her favorite characters, making her seem in-genuine to those who surround her.

Active Abilities:
  • Book Jumping: Penny can enter and bring up to two willing participants into any book. This works best with narrative style texts but is possible (if confusing) in non narrative style texts. While the book is closed, she may navigate the story freely. If the book is open and being read, she is held in that specific active part of the story. She may exit at any time and everyone that was taken with her exits at the same time, regardless of proximity. If the book is destroyed, she, and any passengers, are immediately ejected.
  • Story manipulation: When the cover of a book is closed, Penny has the ability to manipulate the story within by interacting with the world and its characters. This will change the text of the book until Penny exits—upon which time the story returns to normal. All stories reset upon her exit and they do not retain her changes for future visits.
  • Text projection: Penny is able to directly manipulate the visible text of any book from inside of it without interacting with characters but it is highly temporary. This can only be done on the current open page of a book and disappears after about a minute of display.

Passive Abilities: n/a

Weaknesses:
  • Blackouts: Penny experiences regular black outs in the non-literary world where her mind goes elsewhere. She still appears awake but does not engage in interaction and does not remember anything that occurred. These black outs range from a couple of minutes to her longest at 45 minutes long. They are more frequent in times of stress.

Common Magical Items: N/A

Biography: Penny was a fairly normal, nerdy kid from the south east coast of Australia for most of her life. She was obsessed with books of all sorts-- fiction, non fiction, comic books, romance, fantasy, biography—you name it, she read it. She did well enough in school but was a little awkward with the other students. She always felt like she belonged somewhere else. Still, she managed to work out a basically non-tragic existence until her Sophmore year of high school. This is when the blackouts started.

During her first black out, it was assumed that she was just daydreaming as usual, but as the frequency of the blackouts increased throughout the year, Penny's teachers became more and more concerned. She was singled out and suddenly the nerd was the nerd who wasn't even nerdy enough. She went looking for refuge in her books. It near the end of her Sophmore year that things got really weird...

On a particularly trying day...when everything seemed to be going wrong and Penny had suffered from her longest black out yet-- 45 minutes-- nearly missing an entire class... the teenage girl went running to a safe haven in the back of the library during her last class of the day. She just wanted so badly to disappear—to get away from everything that was going wrong. She opened her favorite book Being A Green Mother and flipped to her favorite part with the giant fish. She disappeared, and the book snapped shut behind her. Then—she was there... she could see it, smell it, feel it! She spent hours in that book and it wasn't until she grew hungry and realized that none of the food satisfied that she began to worry how to escape. Luckily, just as easily as she had slipped in by wanting away from her own world—she slipped back out by wanting back.

Unfortunately, so long had passed that people were now looking for her. Unable to answer satisfactorily when questioned things only became worse as summer approached. It was soon after that incident that she received a letter from Starlight Academy. She read it over and over again trying to figure out if it was a prank...but ultimately decided to pack. She told her parents... two upstanding normal people... that she was being accepted to a prestigious school on full scholarship. They just wanted things to be normal again and didn't even question as their daughter left for a far away island where she's as-of-yet not even written a letter.

Resources: Books...lots of books. Penny packed all of her favorite books when she left. A majority of her luggage is books and there's just enough clothes to get her through a couple of weeks without needing to do laundry. She has accepted the school's offer of room and board as she has no access to much else of her own.

Additional Information: Penny's book jumping ability is a full body transference ability. Meaning-- if she is injured in the book, she comes out with the same injury. If she dies in the book, she dies. Though her capability to jump out of the book at any given time has thus far saved her from any mortal consequences. Anything that does not exist in the world of the book (ex: werewolf) that is pulled into the book by a book jumper is changed into the nearest equivalent in line with the book's setting (i.e. other shape shifter, or human) and is returned to usual form upon exit. Special abilities react in the same manner-- shaping to fit the setting of the book or disappearing entirely while inside of the book. Only willing participants may be taken into a book by a book jumper. In-book items and characters may not be taken out of the book.
