Yuki sat in an empty classroom, the 4pm sunset shining through the windows. He shifted uncomfortably, unsure of when the teacher would come in, or if someone else would overhear. This was a touchy subject, and he wasn't even sure if it was legal for him to be away from home. It hadn't been long, but still... At least he could trust Mr. Sinterklaas with this. The man had been nothing but kind to Yuki for the entire time he'd known him. Not to mention Yuki thoroughly enjoyed the lectures - who knew that the world atlas came from the Greek god holding up the heavens?

Finally he heard the door click open. He took a deep breath in, then out.

"Um...good afternoon, sir. Thank you for replying to my email. The reason I called you here is..." He hesitated. Maybe he shouldn't bring other people into his problems. Wouldn't that be him being selfish? But he didn't know what other adult he could turn to... "Like I said in my email, I want to prove to my parents that I'm better off here on the island. To do that, I thought it'd be a good idea to get some kind of professional approval..." He stood, heading to the window to gaze out at the sky. "Some proof that I'm getting good grades, and that I've adjusted well in terms of social bonds and lifestyle." He looked at Mr. Sinterklaas meekly, hoping he would approve. "...would this be possible?"

Noel arrived on time, humming "It's Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas", and in high spirits. Not only was it his month, but it had been quite a while since anybody had asked the ancient god for his help. Something that made Noel truly happy. It meant that he could, hopefully, bring some joy to one of his students.

"I'd be delighted and honoured to lend you a hand," Noel stated calmly as he peered down at Yuki like a kindly grandfather. Noel knew Yuki to be an enthusiastic and capable, if not sometimes awkward or unsure of himself, student. Qualities that a lot of students his age had.

"May I ask why you desire such an endorsement? Do your parents disapprove of you being here on Manta Carlos?" Noel asked as he pulled out two striped peppermint candies - one for himself, and the other he offered to Yuki.

"Well, they--" He paused, wondering if he should reword it or something to make it sound better. In the end, he decided to just state the truth plainly. "No, they don't..." He sighed. "After The Long Night, my parents have honestly been rather worried about me. They suddenly couldn't get a hold of me or anyone at home for the entire ordeal, and I think it's left them a little paranoid..."

He didn't get it. His parents had been the ones to reassure him. To push him to make the move. They'd told him he'd be safer here, but then they suddenly wanted to take him back? He'd just begun making friends. He'd just begun learning how to be independent. He'd just learnt how to deal with being on his own! This all felt horribly contradictory.

"I see," Noel stated calmly when Yuki was done talking.

In his vast experience, it was not uncommon for parents to change their minds, especially after they had spent time away from their children. The nagging guilt of abandonment was often the cause and because time often makes things seem less worse than things actually were, many parents defaulted to "it really wasn't so bad" setting.

"I'm not sure it's purely paranoia. I am inclined to believe they are just worried about you and are afraid they made the wrong choice by sending you to Manta Carlos."

"Maybe you could invite them here to the island? Show them that life is good and that you are happy here and doing well," he suggested as he slowly unwrapped another mint.

Yuki nodded, trying his best to understand his parents' thought process to no avail. No, it didn't make sense. He couldn't grasp it. The 16 year-old curled into himself a little more, studying his desk avidly as if it held some secret to fixing this situation.

"Actually...they're on the island. They insisted on coming after the Long Night, and they've been here ever since..." He mumbled. "I'm..." He trailed off, unsure.

"Just as you say, I want to show them that I'm doing well, and adjusting properly. It's why I e-mailed you, so I was wondering... did you have any ideas?" He poked at the mint Mr. Sinterklaas offered him. Normally he liked sweets, and mints were actually quite nice. But Yuki just didn't have any appetite - his stomach was in knots over this.

Noel thought about Yuki's situation. It sounded like his parents were overly protective of their son, and did not trust his judgment or assurances that he was adjusting well to the island and his new life here.

"If you want I could speak with them?" he offered. "Maybe talking with one of your teachers, a God no less, might help your cause?" he suggested.

He gasped, leaping at the opportunity. Not quite literally, but he did stand up from the desk excitedly. "Yes, that sounds brilliant!" He exclaimed, then sat back down slowly, cheeks turning a subtle pink.

"...sorry, I just... I really do think it'll be the thing to settle this once and for all." He said, fiddling with his fingers. "When do you think you might do it, and where? I think it might be better if I wasn't involved..." He smiled sheepishly.

Noel had to smile at Yuki's excited reaction. "Well, I am free in the afternoons next week. I can talk to your parents then if you like," he offered.

(short, sorry)

"Yes... Please do." He smiled, sure of himself. This was it! Finally his parents would trust him to stay on the island on his own! Finally he'd have a taste of true freedom, without worry of it all being taken away!

"I'll pass their details on to you via email later." He said, standing up once again and beginning to head out. Before he exited though, he bowed deeply to Mr Sinterklaas, holding it for a few moments to show his gratitude. "Thank you so much, sir! I'm ever so grateful!" He said, leaving with a literal skip in his step.
