"This is about someone whose name I'm not going to say," said Jude, very much confirming he was, and also that he was absolutely shit at keeping anything from Rory. "And either way, it might be handy for them to have people around who know how to fight, and of course I thought of you. Travis, maybe, but he's trying to retire. Nothing's happening right now, but you know, in the future. I wanted to know if you'd be interested."

Rory nodded at the confirmation. And she wished she hadn't, but the idea of Travis being retired made her wince. Rory didn't want to retire and that was why Jude was asking. But it seemed like the majority of her team wanted all of it behind them and Rory.... she couldn't be without it.

Like Broen. Eugh.

She nodded. "You know me." And that felt answer enough. Then Rory looked around. "Okay, I can't sit around any longer. Can we go for a walk?"

Alright. Okay. No, not really, but he flagged down the waitress anyway, getting his food to-go and paying before finally leaving.

She was antsy, and Jude didn't speak again until they set out.

"You, uh, have some feelings about this? The... stuff."

Rory scratched at the side of her nose when Jude asked. "No. It's not that. Just... I wasn't entirely honest with you a while back when I was out all night." And before he could get worried again, she quickly added, "nothing happened. Not like that."

Rory huffed. "No telling Genovese, but I helped Broen with housework." And that final word alone should have been a good queue that housework was not what they were doing.

She hung her head a little and laughed. "I didn't want to get lectured by you and... er.... well I didn't want you to know how much I missed it. I guess. Like, it's one thing to figure. You know? Anyway, I — Well I don't like lying to you guys."

Jude's brain went from 'oh no' to 'oh no' when she admitted she hadn't quite been honest.

Jude squinted.

He knew what that meant.

"Who was- you know what, never mind. I don't want to know, because then if Officer Genovese finds out I have plausible deniability. I already know you wouldn't go run off without a good reason, so I'm going to just... trust you have a good reason. Because that's you. You're not going to go run out and beat people up for no reason."

But he didn't like it. Even though he'd pretty much just asked her to do the same damn thing, he still didn't like it.

"I just can't lie to you. I so much as tell you a shirt looks good when it doesn't and you already know."

Rory grinned, the gesture had a nervous undertone but it still helped her to look more confident than she felt. "I did and I don't go running around. I had reckless battle tactics, but I had some reason behind what I did."

And Jude seemed — well like he normally seemed when he was trying not to wag his finger at her and put his opposite hand on his hip.

"I know you guys," she said with a shrug. "I talked to We The People once, that was basically her advice for being a good leader. It was knowing what people needed even before they knew. So I had to watch all of you and learn."

It was good advice. Really good advice.

"Well, I'm not going to ask. And I'm going to try not and judge, even though Travis insists that it is my inherent nature to be judgey and I should just give in and accept it." He didn't want to judge Rory. She was his friend, and if she wanted to go off and do something as stupid as vigilantism... well, it was stupid, but that was her choice.

Okay, he was really bad at the not-judging thing.

"And I'm taking this as a yes, if you need me, you got my number."

Rory gave Jude a look. "Nice try, Mr Genovese, but I see that look. I know that look. It's patented. But don't worry, I know you only judge because you care. Your caring hurts a little, but I'm a big girl and I'll get over it."

And Rory nodded at his final statement. "You'd be correct. I don't like seeing people get bent out of shape and you know where to find me."

Jude was very bad at not judging, but at least his judging helped to keep Rory honest.
