The summer season felt too good to sit inside and play games or hang around the community center. Konpeitō wanted to do something different with Ganymede. Something that really took advantage of the nice breeze the weather provided. A few back and forth texts ended in the two settling on having a picnic when they were free.

But a lot had happened as they waited for that time. When it came, Konpeitō struggled with keeping up his usual enthusiasm towards spending time with one of his favorite people. A list that was unnervingly short and he would rather not think about. Making picnic meals didn't help him either. Every time he had to adjust for a NEK0, he remembered his annoyance with their entire group.

Once the two met up at Oceanic Park, settled down, and began talking, Konpeitō slowly returned to his usual self. He started off distant, not responding to Ganymede with his usual rambles. They were short, to the point, and oftentimes vague (specifically when it came to how he was doing). He was more than happy to let Ganymede take the lead. Being annoyed by one NEK0 didn't mean he had to ruin his relationship with this one. The times when he spoke with more emotion came when he wanted to swerve a conversation to another direction.

It was a beautiful day, and Ganymede was having a pleasant conversation with his big brother Kon. This picnic was turning out to be a delightful idea.

Ganymede was fine with taking the lead in this conversation. He chattered excitedly about this and that: new kinds of magic he'd been exposed to at the Mages' association and the friends he was making there, his upcoming piano recital, an experience he had in Lycia's dream, an old myth he remembered, so on, so forth.

He was grateful to have a friend who went out of his way accommodating the little NEK0's dietary needs. As he did every time, he thanked Kon for this, and for the small things that had helped him to expand his limited diet.

After taking some time to enjoy that food, and to enjoy the summer weather, Ganymede introduced a new topic.

"Oh, I don't think I told you about this yet. I've been going out of my way to meet all the new NEK0s they're rescuing. I asked them to tell me whenever they bring one to the island."

There was some excitement in his voice. A part of him was expecting Kon to praise him, and to have much the same opinions about their kind as he did. With all their shared experiences, how could he not?

Konpeitō never had anything similar to a sibling. Even his closest or youngest online friends were barely friends. People he knew but not anyone he could connect to further than a shallow level. That's what happened when you had to hide your identity from everyone. Each lie he built upon only furthered his distance from his friends.

So there was genuine pride in having someone like Ganymede to take care of. To admire as he spoke about his accomplishments and how he was thriving on the island. There was an ambition to him that Konpeitō enjoyed watching grow and wondered where it would take him. If things fell through with Osmond (the idea of it horrified him and he tried not to linger long on it), then he could use that business degree to fully support Ganymede. If he decided to further pursue his cleaning business.

Apparently that ambition led to Ganymede meeting up with more NEK0s. Konpeitō managed to hold back a deep frown, leaving his smile almost non-existent. He has suspicions that Ganymede was meeting up with any NEK0 he could find. It's why he went to him on if he knew any adult NEK0s. But this was a step further than he expected.

"Oh. Oh! They must be happy having someone of their kind to help them around here." He paused, then took on a concern edge with his voice. "Aren't you worried you're keeping yourself too busy? You have school, your club, piano recitals, magic training... I thought you were focusing more on enjoying your childhood?" On some level, he was concerned that Ganymede would overwhelm himself. What he really wanted was to move on from the topic Ganymede provided.

Ganymede just smiled and waved his hand dismissively, as though Kon's worries were so much smoke that he needed to clear out of the air. "It's no trouble. In the last few months we haven't even gotten a dozen, and every time one does show up I'll take maybe a half hour out of my day for them. And I'm making new friends most of the time."

He took a moment to consider this, though - somehow, this felt a little bit like what KC had told him to think more about. So he tried to take it seriously. He thought about the situation that made the best case for this being an unnecessary burden.

"Well... I did have a harder time of it with KC. I kept stopping by her dorm when she was out, since she barely spends any time in her room. And then when I finally did meet her..."

Ganymede sighed and lay back on the sheet they were having their picnic on, and looked up at the sky. "She says that she likes being bossed around and she liked when her... owner, would hurt her. So... I guess I'm worried that something really bad's gonna happen to her. It can't be healthy to enjoy pain, can it? I think Biology says the whole point of pain is that your body's telling you *not* to do stuff that hurts?"

The smaller catboy looked to Kon for confirmation. Kon did spend a lot of time learning about how bodies work, so he seemed like a good person to ask.

Konpeitō didn't like how Ganymede dismissed his concerns, but he was willing to ignore it and move on. Something Ganymede apparently couldn't do. He doubled down and now there was no longer an easy way to wiggle out of this.

Well, there was, but Konpeitō couldn't do that to him.

He replied with a half-hearted shrug. "I met K.C. I'm not worried about her. If she likes being hurt, then she likes being hurt. Some people enjoy that kind of stuff. I do. There are whole communities for it. I'm sure her therapist told her about them like my therapist did."

Ganymede took a second to register that Konpeito also enjoyed pain like that. This all seemed like some sort of sex thing to Ganymede, and so he resolved not to think about it much further.

"That's part of the problem," Ganymede said. "She refuses to speak to her therapist. She told me about how she just... sits there quietly, during her sessions. Because she thinks it's funny. And I didn't even ask, she just seemed proud of it and she wanted to tell me. So..."

He hesitated, uneasy. "Would you be willing to tell her about those... communities? I would like her to stay safe, but I would feel uncomfortable learning enough to inform her about these things." His face was turning red.

Any other person would have had Konpeitō laughing at their prudishness. Ganymede wasn't any other person, and Konpeitō was getting better at reminding himself that discussing sex isn't normal with children. Even if they're a NEK0 and it's probably not a taboo.

"I mentioned brothels once, but she didn't show any interest in them. She seems capable though. From the times I've met her, she was happy—usually—and enjoyed the surrounding company. There's not... I don't think there's a problem." There was a finality to his voice. His last-ditch attempt at subtly telling Ganymede to shut up, eat his food, and they could happily continue on with their picnic. There wasn't a problem unless he wanted to make one. Based on how anxious Ganymede was over Katherine, that was becoming likely.

Ganymede considered this. Kon seemed adamant about there not being a problem. Ganymede knew that there was a lot he didn't know about how healthy adult relationships worked. Konpeito probably knew better than he did.

"...Okay," he said. "I trust your judgment. You would know more about this than me.... not to mention, she would probably be upset with me if she knew how much I'd been worrying about her. So, I think I can probably stop worrying about it so much."

He smiled at Kon, then looked up at the sky again. There was a simple pleasure to watching all of these interestingly-shaped clouds float by.

"In some ways, she might be doing a better job of adapting here than I am. I'm happy for her."

Konpeitō smiled at Ganymede, happy the topic was somewhat dropped. It was lowered to the ground, anyway. Small victories.

"She got upset at the bar when conversation stopped being fun and turned depressing, so she probably would be annoyed," he commented with vague interest. What got an eyebrow raise out of him was the last thing Ganymede said. "You think so? I thought you were doing great. You look happy." While Ganymede replied, he began eating slices of cantaloupes neatly cut up and in a bowl with other cat-friendly fruits.

Ganymede rolled onto his side and nabbed a piece of cantaloupe to chew on as he thought about how to explain this.

"Well... she's already going out and making friends. It took me a while before I felt comfortable trying to make friends when I didn't have to go out of my way, and I needed someone to talk me through how normal people do that. She's already doing it, and she didn't need help."

He remembered those conversations with his therapist. Though nobody told him, Ganymede picked up on the idea that this was something most people could do instinctually. Somehow, he had lost it, and he had to rebuild it to get to where he was now.
