On and on..

"Down in Jamaica, they got. Lots of pretty women, steal your money then they. Break your hearrrttt.." Ed paused a moment, trying to remember the next verse. She was perched at the edge of one of the smaller cliffs - only about ten feet high, one she'd scrambled up herself - and was singing. Really singing, without changing her voice to sound like the original singer, Stephen Bishop.

Her voice, although childish, gave off a mournful sound that she was quite honestly proud of, echoing down to the sand beneath her. "Lonesome sue, she's in looooveee with ol' Sam.. Take him from the fire to the, frying paaan.."

It was nice, to sing and not worry about anyone hearing. She was certain someone would come up in a few minutes and spoil it for her, complain about the noise or compliment her and make her have to blush and pretend she didn't already know. But for now, she was alone, blissfully so, just her and the waves and the single pair of footprints, leading up to the cliff and suddenly disappearing. She took a deep breath of brisk winter air, flopping down on her back amid the snow and continuing. "On and on, she just keeeppps on singing.. And she smiles, when she feeells like crying, on and on.. On and on, on and ooonnnn.."

OOC: open. For anyone who cares, the song is 'On and on' by stephen bishop. -nods-

Impatiently, Kelly pushed her chestnut hair out of her face, only to have it be blown back several seconds later. She would have clipped it back if she'd had her purse. But her purse full of hairclips was back in her dorm, because she figured she wouldn't need it. I always need hair stuff! Kelly thought to herself.

She had to admit, the view was gorgeous. Like a postcard! It's almost as pretty as the summer nights back in Cali. Kelly desperately missed those summer nights, when she played volleyball on the beach with her friends and layed in the sand staring at the pink-orange sunset until it got too dark to do anything, and she dashed across the street from the beach to her house.

The necklace of pink shells around her neck were all she had of that beach right now. Her best friend had made it for her as a good bye present, before Kelly left.

Argh, it's so windy! she thought as her light gray gauchos blew around her legs. Wandering further toward the sea, she saw a girl who looked a tad bit younger than her, and much shorter, singing. Wow, she has an amazing voice. But a s Kelly got closer, she could tell that this girl wasn't the kind of person who liked being complimented.

So Kelly, her pink polka-dotted flip flops slapping the smooth stones, just sat down next to the girl, and stared out at the sea. The girl stopped singing abruptly. "Hi," Kelly said casually, as if she hadn't noticed the girl singing in the first place.

Edward could hear the girl approaching a mile away, it seemed, but didn't care any more then to swivel her black eyes lazily in the general direction of the slick polished stones against shoes noise she was making. She stayed on her back, finally pausing mid-verse when she realized the girl was sitting beside her and pulled herself up.

She crooked her fingers in a wave towards the girl, squinting off towards the sea. "Are you cold?" She questioned, not really knowing what the weather was like. The past few days she'd been almost unable to distinguish between cold and warmth, and it was starting to scare her. But if she just pretended everything was normal, she knew they'd just leave her alone and she could sort it out on her own...

Ed tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear, just now noticing the wind that seemed to be blowing from all directions at once. She hugged her knees loosely to her chest, unable to think of anything else to say, or if anything else was even called for. At least the girl hadn't brought up her singing...

Kelly waved back and replied without thinking. "Kind of, the wind makes it colder than it is." She cocked her head and was a bout to say 'Why, can't you feel it?', when she suddenly felt that it wasn't a good thing to ask.

Instead she said, "I'm Kelly Purcell." Though she wasn't happy, and was still mad at this stupid school, she managed a small smile. "I'm kind of new." The thick purple sweater she wore was warm, but hints of windchill snuck through the stiching.

The wind died down a tiny bit, but it was still quite cold. Kelly pulled a stick of chapstick out of her pocket and applied it to her lips.

Ed shrugged lightly, realizing for the first time she was clothed in cut-off blue jeans and a tank top. What was going wrong with her? She remained silent for a few moments, finally nodding assent. "...It does."

She grinned softly, nodding and "Edward Winters." she informed the girl, turning a bit to glance at her sideways. "I've been here for a month or so."
Silence, and then "Why don't you like it?" she guessed, turning her head back to the sea.

Kelly blinked. Why don't I like it? How did she know? Are those her powers? She hugged her knees up to her chest. I guess it really is obvious... I don't look like the happiest person here... not even close, really.

She looked down, her small smile fading. "I... just miss all my friends, and my family, and my life! I lived in California, and it was great. Now I have these stupid powers, and... I just miss it, I guess." Great... now I sound like a spoiled brat.

Good way to end that conversation. But Edward didn't seem like the kind of person who would judge someone that quickly... considering the fact that she didn't look like the most happy person either.

Ed nodded, chewing on her lip thoughtfully. "I guess that's why I like it here... I don't have any of those things." She grinned unfathomably, starting to rock back and forth. "That's good, because Maman says I'm going to be here for a long time."

Maman also said she shouldn't talk about herself so much... She tilted her head to the side, finally announcing "California doesn't have snow.", and looking over at the girl to see how she would take this news.

Perhaps she shouldn't have brought it up, come to think of it. Snow was very important, and she wouldn't like it if someone had told her that France didn't have snow or something. "You used to not have powers?" She questioned, trying to draw Kelly's attention away from bemoaning her previous statement.

That made Kelly smile. California doesn't have snow. "Yeah, I noticed that," she said, grinning. Ed was nice...

Ed's next sentance made her think. Did I not have powers? Kelly wondered. Hmm... maybe... I'm really not sure. "I don't know..." she said slowly. "I think I've always had them... but... I just noticed them recently... a month ag, I think."

Wow, that's weird. I've never thought of that before. I mean, I haven't like, gotten bitten by a radioactive spider or something. Kelly furrowed her brow, still thinking.

Edward nodded gravely. "I would have noticed it, if I lived in California." Poor girl... At least she was somewhere where it snowed now.

"That's weird," Ed frowned, trying to imagine what it would be like to not know you had powers. "I've had powers forever, and only a year ago I was able to start controlling them and things."
She paused, thinking for a moment and then correcting herself. "Well, I guess it doesn't really count if you can't do things with them. I wasn't able to play with shadows when I was a baby, but I still liked the dark. And I wasn't able to turn into other people, but I still looked all scary, so maybe I was just turned into someone and I didn't know how to change back." Ed considered her sudden outburst, finally nodding and deciding she was right.

"What are your powers?" She asked, struggling to remember what her Maman had said about talking to people. You were supposed to say something, and then ask them the same thing, right? That was what she was doing. She was good at that...

Kelly had tried hard to forget what her powers were, so she wouldn't have to use them, but it hadn't worked. Oh well... "I have these red laser things I can shoot out of my eyes, and I can do protective shields. More of a superhero power than anything else..."

She wiggled her toes around. Kelly needed to repaint them, the hot pink polish was getting cracked. What color next? She'd gotten a new aquamarine color she'd liked... she decided to try that.
