Off I Go Again

He'd more or less just come back from Mes, and there he was: Already ready to leave again. He'd been back not even a full two months, and while Ralf was going to end up going with him this time, he couldn't help but feel a little bit bad for Tengu. He'd taken the spot, settled in, fucked off to another planet, came back with no notice, and then... there he was, leaving again.

So when he slunk in after drinking that night, Jackal definitely looked guilty. He wasn't even sure if Tengu was home, but if she wasn't? Maybe it was time to... make her waffles or something for dinner. To make up for how bad he'd been at the whole thing. His spear was still tucked away in his room, but he was going to have to show spider it sooner or later.

Tengu wasn't home right then, which let Jackal stretch his (very meager) domestic skills. Following instructions wasn't difficult, and before long there were pancakes ready to go on the stove.

After a rewarding (although exhausting) day of delivering packages all over the island, Tengu perches herself on the balcony railing upon making her landing. Her massive wings then tuck themselves in as her feet reach down to the balcony proper. Standing outside the glass door, Tengu swings it wide open and takes one really big step inside her home. To her delight and her confusion, she could catch the unmistakable aroma of pancakes in the air. Her eyes quickly lock in on Jackal.

"Hello my second favoritest and bestest roommate~ Good to see that your still here! I am just POOPED from making a whole bunch of urgent deliveries today." remarked Tengu as she rolled her shoulders and wiped her brow of non-existent sweat. She then strolls right up to Jackal, looks around the kitchen, then glances around the rest of the room before commenting "Huh... did you tidy up place? And what is with pancakes so late? Couldn't wait for breakfast? Well... I hope you made extra because I am famished." grinned Tengu, whom meant for that last sentence to be taken as a jest.

Jackal couldn't help but squint as he was addressed as the second favorite. There were only two of them, right? Only no, the cats - but there were two cats, so why wasn't he third?

Wait a second, why wasn't he first?

"They're all for you," Jackal said, sliding over a plate with several pancakes on it. "Since I already ate." Mostly meat, unfortunately. Pancakes didn't sit all that well in his stomach, even if they did seem kind of nice. "But hold on, second? Who's first in this roommate hierarchy?"

He was betting on Glumdrop. It was always glumdrop, wasn't it? The cat ruled the damn apartment, and they didn't even pay rent!

Tengu straitened her posture, a little surprised but pleased at the same time. It was an awfully kind thing for her roomie to do for her.

"Oh!? All of them? Why thanks! Well perfect timing!" thanked Tengu as she takes the pancake plate. Tengu was quick cut into the pancakes with a fork and stuffed her mouth full of delicious pancakey-ness. When Jackal asked whom was first, she couldn't help smile a little as she thought it would have been super obvious.

"Dweooff da-ohff old dan-" Tengu then pauses to allow herself a moment to shallow her food so that she can speak more clearly "Ahrem... well the cats obviously! I mean... who else lives here? They are both first favoritiest and bestest roommates because I think it would be unfair if I had to pick just one of them~ I love them both equally so they are therefore tied for first!" cheered Tengu, whom then looked down to the cats now sitting patiently next to Tengu

"I mean look at them! How can I be forced to choose?" chuckled Tengue to herself. The two cats look up to Jackal swaying their tails in unison, Glumdrop with the usual adorably grumpy face and meanwhile Prissletoes seems to be... almost smiling. It was as if the two felines were reaffirming their place above Jackal in the pecking order.

"Mhhmmm... MHMM! You know... these pancakes are so scrump-dilly-umsious that I might have to reconsider you for being best roommate. Mhmmm! What do you guys think?" asked Tengu, directing her question to the two cats. They both look to Tengu for a moment, then Prissletoes mews and rubs themselves on Tengu's legs while Glumdrop sort of just wanders off.

"Hee hee... okey okey... maybe everyone here can be tied for first in being best roommate~" snickered Tengu, whom then looks back up to Jackal.

"Anything special going on with you Jackal?" questioned Tengu as she takes another forkfull of pancake.

So he'd been upgraded to be tied with first? Tied with the cats? It was a damn good thing he wasn't a pride demon, because even though he wasn't he couldn't help put put on a mock pout. He let Tengu continue talking as she ate, keeping an eye on the cats before he finally settled down, leaning against the wall, his tail pressing down flat against his back.

"Wanted to give you a bit more notice than last time," Jackal said. "We're going off-planet again. To give you the short of it, apparently after last time some of those aliens think I'm some kind of god since I killed their god, and they kidnapped my friend's husband and carried him off back home, so we're going back to straighten things out. Apparently we're.. I don't know. Some kind of major refugee relocation. Apparently Malara's found another planet to use."

Or something. Jackal was definitely not 100% aware of the details. He was letting Malara handle things, and then he'd deal with whatever he actually had to deal with. He wasn't going to stick his nose into things like 'how to possibly move millions of people between planets'. He knew what he was good at, after all.

It took awhile for Tengu's robo-bird brain to process the information just give as that whole sentence was a whole mess of things that sounded as if it came from space soap opera.

"Huh... that sounds pretty confusing. Like the one space movie! But its good on you sticking with your friends in rough times... I mean rescuing their husband while evacuating an entire planet is pretty is quite a lot to do for a friend but that must mean you two have a solid b. Also good to know that you are making friends! Especially people like Miss Malara! I hear a lot of things about her since she is... like some important god person. I delivered some packages for her but never really knew her personally. Well I hope you two have fun with all of that. And thinks for letting me... and the pancakes of course~" speaks Tengu in earnest.

"Sooo... when do you plan on coming back?" asked Tengu, as she stuffs yet another delicious triangle of pancake into her mouth.

Did he really have a solid bond with Malara? A part of it sort of felt more like it was just significantly less of a favor for him then it was for other people. For other people, going off planet and risking life and limb was a big deal, and for Jackal? Not so much. Even if he died he'd just pop right back up, no worse for the wear. He could not be harmed by the truly wicked, and so he felt he had very little to fear.

Tengu's question, on the other hand, was definitely a question.

"Not sure," Jackal said. "We figure there's maybe a million people to bundle up and take with us. Two or three weeks to get there, two or three weeks of evacuation, two or three weeks of setup. I won't be sticking around for the new colony building stuff, once they're off the ships I'm done with my work. So maybe two, three months? Pretty long, honestly, but my boyfriend's going and a few other people, so it'll be less of a three man show."

Had he even mentioned Ralf? Maybe in passing, but he couldn't remember how much he'd come up.

"Whoa... thats a lot of people...and a long time to be gone. But seems like a big important mission so thats understandable! I mean... thats a lot of... of... conscious what is the word I am looking for? Oh thanks! Yeah that is a lot of logistics to have to through so I understand! I'll be sure the bed is nice and tidy for you when you get back~" chirped Tengu, stuffing another bit of pancake in her mouth. One of the cats, Prissle-Toes, hops up on the nearby counter and mewls at Jackal.

"Aww... I think she is telling you that they going to miss you~ Or... she might just be hungry but I like to think that actually cares for you~ Oh! Do you need help like packing and stuff?"

Talking to Tengu was always an adventure, wasn't it? She was... well, Jackal had mostly figured out that Tengu sometimes talked to someone--her conscience--and that a lot of her pauses could be attributed to that. So he didn't even bat an eye when she randomly thanked herself and carried on as if nothing had happened.

Without even really looking, Jackal reached over, scritching Prissel-toes between the ears. He liked the cats. He hadn't thought he'd like the cats, but he did anyway, and they seemed to like him.

"Nah, I got it," Jackal said. "We're packing light. The ship's got what I'll need. You don't need to worry about it, just hold down the fort here."

"Mhmm-phh-mur-muff!" agreed Tengu, her too cheeks stuffed with mushed pancake to make out what she was trying to say but the affirmative thumbs up gesture of her mechanical digit helped communicate that she understood. She takes a single large gulp of food, and washes it with a quick rinse of water.

"Well we are going to miss you but don't let that hold you back from enjoying your trip now~ Be sure to tell me all about when you get back now!"
