Appearance Description: Oddleif is a willowy youth of a woman of fair skin, unusual pale-blonde hair at shoulder length and vibrant green eyes flecked with gold. A scar runs down below her left eye, a reminder of (a lack of) caution from her youth. She is fairly tall (5’7’’) and can come off as quite lanky, a fact she tries to hide by wearing oversized clothes. Her usual outfit consists of a loose-fitting working shirt, patched-up dark brown trousers and mud-caked, ankle-height working boots, sometimes wearing thick and sturdy leather gloves to protect her callused hands from whatever work she’s currently doing. Most of the time, there is a layer of dirt or mud on her clothes, which might give off the impression that she is unclean … but it is not her fault that she gets dirtier faster than she can possibly clean up. She often wears her hair tied up in a sorry bun when there is nobody around to help her braid it up, but she is just as likely to leave it loose.
Personality Description: Oddleif’s an outgoing and friendly person, very keen on being lighthearted and jester-like. She can be prone to getting out of hand with her mischief and knack for pranks unless there is an authoritative figure to keep her in check from time to time. Odd is the kind of person who has a lot of energy in her and wouldn’t survive being cooped up for too long, so it’s not unusual to find her doing all kinds of activities to keep herself entertained. Boredom is her worst vice – if she is forced to do something she doesn’t like, she will appear to be lazy, rebellious and uncooperative, while the opposite will have her be very enthusiastic and hard-working instead. Though Oddleif is not school-smart, she’s certainly not an idiot – she can be resourceful and creative, able to wiggle her way out of most situations with ease. Socially, she can get along with a wide array of people and has friends all around the world, but there are only few individuals she allows to get close and see the sides of her she never shows to anyone else. To those individuals, she is fiercely loyal and would risk life and limb should they be threatened.
Powers:
Elemental Power – Ice
Oddleif has discovered that her general knack for all things frozen was more than just a personal quirk – it turned out that her ‘gift’ allows her to manipulate the element of water around her surroundings, showing a preference to solidying it, turnig it into ice. At the moment, her powers are on the brink of infancy – aside from frosting up glasses and making a snowball on the hottest day of summer, Oddleif has very little knowledge of her abilities and its potential.
Eidetic memory
Whether it is related to her powers, her unknown heritage or a stroke of genius, Oddleif has undeniably proven to have an extraordinary memory, able to remember information and details from the briefest exposures. During her time growing up, this trait has proved extremely useful at picking up various skills after being shown only once or twice before able to do it just as well, if not better than her teacher.
Biography:
Should anyone ask Oddleif of her origins, she will sincerely answer she does not know – her origins are just as much a mystery to others … as it is to herself.
Her earliest memories were living on the streets in a German town, trying to survive the ordeals of the day by doing whatever menial work she could find – and there was plenty enough, for Oddleif was resourceful yet sweet enough to win the hearts of the people she met. In one of the summers, a large circus caravan stopped into town to set up for a while – and that was, perhaps, one of Odd’s happiest memories. Though street urchins like her weren’t allowed inside the great tents where other children and their families entered, she spent her time peering through whatever holes, rips or tears she could find, watching magicians awe the crowd with their tricks, flexible contortionists smile as they bent backwards at impossible angles, animal trainers make fierce and exotic beasts leap through rings of fire …
… and then there were the less awesome people, that were nevertheless the soul of the circus: the hard-working men and women that set up the stages, did the clown’s make-ups, fed the beasts and made certain everything was ready before showtime. Oddleif saw it all, and was completely amazed how everyone could find their place in such a colorful and chaotic mish-mash of souls. The young girl could not explain the sadness that took over her then – it was something far more overwhelming than watching the highborn children play in the city park, with their well-dressed parents proudly looking over them, holding sweets and other delights. It wasn’t the lack of a family that bothered her, nor was it the loneliness of an urcheon’s life … what bothered Oddleif then was that she did not know where her place was, nor did she want to remain on the streets for long.
So she desperately tried to make herself useful, by getting underfoot during the day, watching the circus crew as they did their routine chores and studying the performers during their practice … while during the night, she used all that she managed to learn to draw attention to herself. Not many people paid much attention to the ashen-haired girl as she successfully juggled ten objects in the air without dropping them, nor was the celebrity-clown pleased when the children seemed to laugh more heartily at her faces than his, but it was enough to help the repairmen with a wagon that broke down on the last day of the circus, to draw the notice she so wanted. When questioned, Oddleif did not have much to say about herself, other than being an orphan begging to be taken in. While others saw nothing more but another mouth to feed, the chief service man saw potential in having another pair of hands to help, which led to being taken in by the circus troupe, to Oddleif’s great delight.
The months that followed certainly weren’t easy, as the growing girl had to work harder than she ever did in her life before to earn her keep, never mind that she had to deal with the initial mistrust and disdain of the others … but in her heart, Oddleif was nevertheless glad, for she felt she was doing something worthwhile for once – that there was a future for her like this, unlike living in the streets. Traveling with the circus troupe, she saw places, met people and learned a great deal simply by watching those around her act and react to the given situations, while the repairman that took her under his wing did his best to explain to her the things she could not.
With time, Oddleif had certainly earned her place amidst the circus troupe, as well as their trust and sympathy – she proved herself to be a clever and quick-witted girl, able to learn things at a staggering pace, all the while proving very likable and reliable. Where once she had only but watched from a distance, she had grown up to help set up the stages for the nightly shows, help the performers with their costumes and make-up, fed and groomed the menagerie available and even went as far as to become the apprentice to some of the entertainers, learning how to walk the tightrope without falling or practicing knife-throwing while blindfolded. As the years passed, Oddleif could have never imagined herself being anywhere else in the world, doing anything less than what she was doing now – could anyone claim to be as content with their lives as she could?
Little did she know that fate had something else in mind for her …
It was in her seventeenth winter of life that Oddleif first manifested her powers externally. Before that, her affinity for all things cold were considered as nothing more but personal quirks – after all, everyone at a circus was weird in some way. In her case, she never seemed to be bothered by the cold and her skin always felt cool to the touch even in the hottest room; Odd had always hated hot drinks and adored the winter, even if it meant hardships for others. Growing up, she was firm in her belief that she was special in a way, given how she could make the snowflakes dance at her whim like a swarm of icy butterflies, but this had always been dismissed as a child’s wishful fancy. In time, she had also given up this notion, but would come to realize that they all were wrong.
The circus caravan was trying to traverse over a frozen river, believed safe considering the time of the season, but that winter had been milder than usual and the ice was far thinner than anyone might have anticipated. Creaking under the great weight of all the people, animals and wagons, the ice began to break under their feet, the cold waters of the river threatening to open its maw and swallow them all whole. A panic had begun to spread amongst the caravaneers as they tried to salvage what they could – belongings or simply their own selves. Oddleif, on the other hand, seemed completely paralyzed by fear, unable to make her body move, to run and save herself – instead, she collapsed on the crumbling ice and felt the water rise as she sunk lower, the chill seemingly boring through her clothes and flesh, sinking into her bones …
... when all of a sudden, everything froze. The water ceased to flow while rime covered the axles of the wagons, making them impossible to move; people and animals found their feet stuck, kept in place by unnatural snow. Even the air felt completely still, the winter winds ceasing its howling and making the banners fall limp in its absence. Oddleif was found laying unconscious on a thick sheet of ice unseen since then, appearing to be the source of the unnatural phenomen that inadvertently saved the circus caravan from tragedy … but gratitude was nowhere to be found. When Oddleif recovered from her torpor a day later, she discovered things to have changed in a way she never imagined it to happen – rather than rejoice for its minimal losses, the circus chief asked her to leave, for the entertainers had grown superstitiously fearful of the events that had happened on the frozen river. The young woman was stupefied, initially refusing to leave but was forcibly driven out by the unfriendliness and utter disdain she received from the people she once considered family and friends as they now called her a ‘witch’. She had no choice but to slink away unnoticed, before fear turned to drastic action.
Heartbroken and lost, Oddleif had nothing to herself but the clothes on her back and a vague sense of direction towards the last city the circus caravan had passed through. If anything, she was lucky to find some goodwill from some of the patrons that recognized her, which offered her lodgings and a meal, but otherwise were just as suspicious of her presence. If anything, it was fortunate that Odd didn’t have to live with that for long – not long after the ‘incident’ on the river happened, that she was approached by an odd figure, explaining to her about the ‘gifts’ some individuals have, which now seem to include her … and that there is a place for someone like her, where she wouldn’t have to fear about being hurt for it. Though Oddleif had a hard time believing something like this, she had nothing else to lose other than an opportunity … so she accepted to attend this mysterious Starlight Academy, intrigued to find out what it means to be a member of such a place.
If anything, it just gave her another chance to find her place in this strange, vast world that she lived in.
Additional Information:
• Oddleif has never attended school – that also means she has never learned how to read, write or do calculus, which is why she would be starting at Elementary.
• The scar on Odd’s face is from an incident involving leaping off the tallest caravan in front of everyone and an unfortunately-placed tent peg.
• Oddleif has no recollection of her parents or her caretaker during her infancy – she believes she might have been at her town’s orphanage for a while, but she must have run away as she didn’t like the way children were treated there.
• There is only speculation about Oddleif’s parentage … but there is the convenient circumstance in a faraway land of a noble family losing their only heir to intrigue.
• Oddleif prefers wearing men’s clothes, simply because they are more practical and wouldn’t regret dirtying them up.
• Oddleif is the epitome of all things NOT feminine.
