Where am I?’ Castiel thought. One second he’d been in a classroom, the next he was in the halls, stranded in his uniform, looking for the exit. He just wanted to get out of this goddamned school. It was so crowded, and Castiel absolutely hated crowds. Especially crowds with people who could literally burn your face off if you get too close to them. He’d just gotten out of the classes that he’d been 10 minutes late for (every single one of them) and just wanted a breath of fresh air from the weirdness that was Starlight Academy.

He looked around for at least a sign that he was near an exit, but the closest thing he saw to an exit were the classroom doors. He was definitely in the main building, at least. He could tell because there were subjects like Geometry and Flying class. He sighed. There was no way he was going to find his way out, huh. He’d really wished that he’d taken the map this morning. Pride was definitely his downfall right now. He sighed and decided to just stay put until the crowds subsided.

Naoko was done for the day, which was a blessing in itself. Just because she was good at school--and she was, thanks to an excellent work ethic--didn't mean she necessarily enjoyed school. No, she was pretty ambivalent about the whole thing. She liked being good, and she liked some of her classes, but some of them were just agonizingly boring.

She was on her way out when she spotted a change of flow. Someone was interrupting the usual traffic pattern of the hall, and that normally meant either a newcomer who was so physically large that they impeded the flow of traffic, or it meant that someone new was standing perfectly still in the middle of the hallway, lost and unsure of where to go.

Naoko paused for a moment, reminding herself that she was trying not to stick her nose in other people's business, and then decided it really wouldn't hurt to help.

Just this once, of course.

Naoko cut across the flow of traffic to find a boy around her age standing in the middle, looking lost.

"New?" She asked immediately, raising her eyebrows.

Castiel turned around. He didn’t actually expect someone to try and help him. This school seemed to give off a more ‘kill or be killed’ vibe than ‘let’s be friends’. This just reinforced in his mind how odd and unpredictable this school was. He really didn’t want to admit to anyone that he was lost. He should’ve taken the goddamn map.

“I’m not lost.” He responded as he looked up at the girl. Dammit, this girl was taller than him too! (Luckily, not by that much.) He only wondered what kind of powers she had. She probably was human or had a human form. Maybe she was a werewolf. Were there blonde werewolves? Castiel decided to stop thinking of such stupid things.

Naoko let out a rather unladylike snort when the boy said that he wasn't lost. He obviously was. He was standing in the middle of the hallway, sighing and looking around. Of course he was lost.

"Then where are you going, exactly?" Naoko said, raising an eyebrow. The polite thing to do would be to play along somehow, but while Naoko could be pretty dang friendly, she wasn't going to indulge someone who was lying to her face. And if he wasn't lost, then something else was going on, and that wasn't her business anyway.

But he was definitely lost, so it didn't matter. Everyone who wasn't born on the island got lost over and over.

He held his head high. “I’m just, uh, waiting for the crowd to thin.” Which he was. It was (probably) much easier to navigate the halls when you could see them. Or at least, that was his theory. He hated that this thought kept burrowing to the front of his mind, I should’ve picked up a map. Honestly, that would’ve been more awkward. Everyone would plainly see he was new because he had the map. The map would’ve probably died in two minutes because of all the people in the hall and all their different powers. The poor paper wouldn’t have had a chance in the first place.

Naoko rolled her eyes at the response, folding her arms over her chest.

"There's no need to be like that, you know," she protested. "Everyone is new at some point, and everyone gets lost, so if you just tell me what you're trying to find, I'll point the way and the problem's solved."

She didn't really see the point in acting stubborn. Why not just admit he was lost, get help, and move on with his life?

Honestly, people could be so irritating.

Castiel faltered. Maybe he should just accept this girl’s help. He really didn’t want to; it was already pretty awkward without him admitting he had been lying. He looked to the side. “I, um, might’ve forgotten where the exit was...” He mumbled under his breath.

That was definitely the most painful thing he’d ever done. This was exactly why Castiel hated social interaction. He sucked at it. His stubborn and hotheaded appearance made him unapproachable, while his arrogant and prideful personality made him unbearable to be around. He really wished he had the power of invisibility at that moment.

Aha. So she was right.

Naoko did her best not to smile, turning away to hide it as she gestured the correct way.

"Assuming you want to get out of the building, the fastest way is that way. But if you're trying to get back towards the front of the school, it'd be a bit faster to go that way, so you don't have to go the whole way around the building," Naoko explained, swinging around to point the opposite direction. "The school's really big, so it's easy to get lost.

"Did you already go by the administration office then?"

“Really?” Castiel asked her, astonished. He really didn’t have any reason to be, but for him finding anything in this place was a magical feat. He was also pretty glad that she didn’t seem to hold any hostility towards him. He personally would’ve disliked himself at that moment as well. Getting caught in a spiral of lies really sucked.

“I actually went up there this morning. This is my first day on campus, actually.” He looked over to the side, a small flush of embarrassment covered his cheeks as mumbled out, “I just forgot to grab a map...”

"Really," Naoko confirmed. She didn't see the point in lying to people, especially not when he was new. A lot of people who were new to the island had less-than-enjoyable pasts, and Naoko wasn't going to make things worse by bullying them just because they were less than polite.

"Well, if you want me to point your way back there to get a map, I can. The maps are really useful, since the school more or less assumes everyone is coming in from the outside and isn't familiar with the school grounds." Which was fair enough, because it was more or less true. The number of students who were natives to the island was vanishingly small, and while Naoko proudly counted herself among their number, she didn't have any illusions about how many there were.
