So that was what was with the pen biting. He'd kind of just assumed she had a bit of an oral fixation. That made a hell of a lot more sense, even if it was kind of hard to imagine the idea of Alma having... well, anger issues.

"Just one high end private school, thankfully. Kind of happy I didn't have to move around. Dad wanted one that was secure, so he picked one that was good and actually checked who was coming through the gates. Lots of sons of kind of famous people, or kids born into old money. Dad said it was good practice or rubbing elbows with people who I'd probably have to impress one day, and it wasn't bad or anything. I guess I was... kind of a loner? I was friendly with everyone and more or less everyone was friendly back, but I didn't really have close friends or anything like that."

"I guess that makes sense. Mob boss' son gotta be kept safe and all that. Sucks you didn't have a lot of friends though. I mean, I didn't after I bit another kid, but I kinda did that to myself."

Alma turned more, playing with the end of her tail. Even the people on the debate team she hadn't really considered friends until recently. They had always done different things, and she'd always just had Aaron for the most part.

"It was just me and Aaron for most of our lives. We got each other. Who knows you better than your twin, right?"

Alma gave Jude a tight smile and added, "Sorry. I know that whole topic is awkward. I just think about it a lot. It's easy most of the time, acting like he died or whatever. But the truth is, I kinda see him every time I look in a mirror. Makes me wish I had inherited that bit of vampire lore from Mom."

The topic of Aaron was absolutely an awkward one, but probably not for the reasons Alma seemed to think. The idea of what had happened to her felt distant and untouched to Jude. He couldn't relate to it, not really. Nothing like that had ever happened to him, or to anyone he'd been close to at the time, and much of his discomfort was from the intense feeling that he didn't get it. That he somehow was misunderstanding. That he was going to get it wrong.

"I can't imagine," Jude said, because he couldn't. He couldn't imagine what it was like. "But... you don't have to worry about it being awkward on my behalf. If you want to talk about it, you can. You don't have to worry about... I don't know, scaring me off or something like that."

Could he be scared off something like that? Probably not, no.

Alma smiled at Jude and leaned her head on his shoulder. He smelled good and she liked how warm he was. It was comforting, more so because of the way he was responding to all of this. For as much as thinking about last December made her stomach flip, Alma didn't want it to. She much preferred feeling nothing about it, and that was easier to do when the other person was detatched from it. Her mom. Iggy. Even Audric. They were all too close to what had happened.

She sighed a bit and said, "I mean. There's a part of me that wants to lock it away and never think about it again. But I also know it'll never go away. I'll be around someone with an attraction aura one day and I'll be back on the futon in the bedroom."

She looked up at him, coiling her tail around both of them as she continued. "I feel like I need this. Iggy and I have talked about it. But everybody who hears about it always basically says the same thing. How they'd have kicked his ass. Cut off his balls. That isn't what I want though. I need it all to be not so extreme, if that makes sense?"

"That's just..." Jude trailed off for a moment. He couldn't just say things. Couldn't just blurt it out.

"It's not comforting, hearing that the people you love are going to hurt themselves to hurt the person who hurt you. It's just... frustrating. I don't think everyone gets that."

He knew. He hadn't been through what she'd been through, but he understood anyway. He understood because he'd heard a lot of similar sentiments in his own time, and he reached out, resting a hand on Alma's own.

"You just want it to fade into the background. To not be a part of your life anymore. Revenge just means spending more mental energy on it, and you don't want that."

He could relate. He didn't want to think about it. He tried not to, and it was so much easier now that he didn't sleep.

"Yeah. That's about right. I'm glad you get it. Iggy gets it, but he's still colored by being there for it."

Alma hugged Jude tight, smiling softly. "So what are you and your dad gonna do? I mean, he doesn't seem like the type to just sit around. You're a lot like him actually."

It was different talking about things iwth people who had been there. Talking about the end of the world with a Halcyonite was a far cry from talking about it to someone from Manta Carlos, and Jude felt some of the tension ease out of his shoulders as he leaned against Alma, burying his forehead against his shoulder.

"An Italian place, probably. I don't think my dad ever thought he'd get to use his degree again, but now he has to flex it in the direction of every moderately wealthy person on the island to find someone who can loan him the money to start the place. He used to run one back in Halcyon, and once that's started... well, we're going to move out of Officer Genovese's place and get our own. Just the two of us."

"Just you and your dad, huh? Like me and my mom." Alma snickered a bit and ran her fingers though Jude's hair while he leaned against her. "Well at least we got to each other first. We won't get Brady Bunch'd."

"An authentic Italian place sounds nice though. Maybe I can convince Mom to start going there instead when we do our little celebrations. Either way, I hope it works out for you two."

It was nice being close to her. Nice having that little touch, the feeling of her fingers in his hair. If he'd been tired at all, he might have just fallen asleep there, but since neither of them actually slept, that wasn't exactly in the cards.

He snickered a bit at her reference. "Somehow I don't think my dad's gunning for that kind of a thing anyway. So we're safe on two counts."

He stayed that way for several more minutes before his neck started to ache, and he finally pulled back, giving a small stretch as he did.

"You'd better. I'm already kind of set on helping him out with it, even if he hasn't asked. I figure I can do night prepwork or something. Stuff like... cutting vegetables so they're ready for the next day and stuff like that. Give me something to do in the early hours when it's really slow."

"Of course," she said with a small laugh. "I'll come by to help too if you need it. Keep you company at least." She let him pull back and stretch, thinking to herself a bit. "You want to get something to eat? Or maybe just a drink? I'm kinda thirsty anyway."

Standing up, Alma stretched herself and looked over at Jude, seeking confirmation one way or another. "We could watch TV or do homework like a couple of nerds."
