Samara had rushed home after speaking with Chi at the community center. She was both enraged and in pain. It was one of those times she always felt most like her mother, and she hated that more than anything.

She couldn't show a damn thing, or then Corsalyn would probably say she jinx Honua or something. Her heart was in a rage and tears were already streaming down her eyes as she slithered through her and Gwyn's home.

She went immediately to her room, though her tail strayed out in the hallway, forcing her door to remain open. She flopped on her bed and balled her eyes out, screaming into her pillow and all too glad she'd said no to Gwyn walking her back.

No one needed to see her this way.

After making a couple quick stops on the way back, Gwyn finally arrived back home. It was New Year's Eve, after making a few rounds and socializing here and there he was ready to just sit at home to quietly celebrate. He'd arrived back, Sam had gotten in before him, after leaving the community center in a less than pleasant mood. The dragon opted to check on her after setting his bags down on the counter.

"I know you asked to be left alone, but I'm checking in on you anyway," he said, from just outside her door. Considering her tail, the scene probably looked almost comedic. But he didn't just want to barge in anyway.

It wasn't hard to tell that Samara was home. Her long tail was uncoiled all the way down the hallway and by the time Gwyn had gotten to her door, which was wide open thanks to her tail, Samara was lying face down on her bed with her arms cradling her head on the pillow. It was a classic, I'd been crying pose really.

She sniffed a few times and looked up at him, wiping away tears that were no longer there. Her face felt red and raw and gross. Hardly how she wanted Gwyn to see her. She was supposed to look dignified or something.

Sam didn't cry often. She'd learned not to as a child when her mother was still around for the very brief time. Crying was for weaklings and weaklings only got tormented further.

"Oh... Gwyn... you're home. Sorry, I left the house in a mess." A huge overstatement, as the house to anyone else, must have looked spotless.

"Don't worry about it, Sammy. It's fine, it's your space too you know," he sighed and let himself in, careful not to step or trip over her tail. "I'm more concerned about you than the house. It's a holiday and you're here crying in your room. This about Tarana and Honua isn't it?"

He was in the room but he wasn't sure where he should go. He opted to sit on the bed with her, mindfully positioning himself so that he'd avoid contact.

"Am I that obvious?" Samara asked aloud, more to herself than him. She already knew the answer. She rubbed again at her sore nose.

"Rana and I... We've always been sssso close. I've known ssssshe ssscrews around. I don't care. But now ssssshe's being intimate with Honua? I-It's bad enough that Honua already getssss to live in a big house and be coddled by your family and Narraine. N-Now sssssshe gets Rana too?"

Sam sighed and paused as she hiccuped, fresh tears rolling down her cheeks in a hot line. She gently hit her pillow. "And now ssssshe'sss going to get c-c-closssse to all our ssssisters. I ssshould be happy for her, but I feel alone inssstead. It'sssss not fair!"

"Yeah you are really easy to read, but it's fine," he stared at his hands and listened to her. Apparently this situation ran pretty deep. It was hitting some old sore spots. The dragon sighed, not quite sure what to say. He knew she was more or less an outcast within the family, even if it wasn't explicitly stated. That was the whole reason they were even living together.

"So that's how it is. This one's kind of a doozy. You two were more than just close though weren't you? It's different because it was someone who you're familiar with. And she's getting cozy with everyone. Family's weird though, I don't think you're as alone as you feel. They just don't know you. Then acted pretty stupid about things instead of getting to know you. I don't think Tarana would just turn her back on you, if what I'm assuming about you two is correct."

He frowned, this kind of thing wasn't exactly his strong suit. "Why not talk to her? Maybe start fresh with her? Pick up where you left off. I dunno, You deserve some happiness too, Samara," he reached into his pocket and produced a fresh pack of tissues for her.

Samara got what he was getting at. "We were never that intimate. But... we both knew. We talked about it once. It'sss never been anything." She paused here, voice growing more resolved. "It'll never be anything."

Sam sat up and took the offered tissues with quiet thanks, dabbing at her already sore nose and eyes. She blinked away the stinging from her previous tears and took a few quivering breathes to stabilize herself before continuing to speak.

"With Tarana it'sss hard to say. She's never exactly sssstuck up for me. She'll do whatever she thinksss isss bessst for the majority." She looked down at her hands; closed and opened them a few times and inspected her claws as she did so. "I am not bessst for the family."

"I see... " he looked at her sympathetically this was how it was for her? She wasn't even totally sure of where she stood with the sister she was closest to. No wonder she pulled away the way she did. He couldn't really fathom the notion of feeling that cut off from his family. "I'm really sorry you feel that way."

He moved to put a hand on her shoulder, but pulled himself back. He stared at the floor for a couple seconds. "You have a place, even if no one can see it. You're pragmatic and you work quietly where someone else might crash in and ruin it. Like with that naga, okay it didn't all go quite as planned, but I saw what you were trying to do. It wasn't even aggressive you were looking for something mutually beneficial so it wouldn't make for trouble down the road. Because how many of your sisters would have dismembered him i a dark alley then gone to jail?"

He smiled a bit, "But even if they don't appreciate you, you've got a place here. You're..." he paused as he considered how to phrase what he wanted to say. "You're a really good friend. You sell yourself short, and you shouldn't. I couldn't just turn a blind eye when I saw you leave the community center like that."

Sam smiled a little, trying not to show off fangs and glad her hood was remaining downward. She didn't like touch, it was true. It took a lot out of her to give or receive, but she was feeling bad enough that Samara hugged Gwyn. It was a light, nervous sort of hug, but it was one nonetheless.

"T-Thank you, Gwyn. Y-You are a very good friend assss well." She pulled back from the hug then and looked down at her hands and arms with a conflicting mix of emotions. "Thisss new year isss a time of change, yess? Throwing away the old and forging ahead to better times?"

He tensed a bit as she hugged him, it was mostly surprise. He smiled at her when she released him. "Well, I do try my best with these kinds of things," he grinned. "Maintaining solid friendships is an important aspect of life"

"It is the time for fresh starts in the symbolic sense, yes. Making resolutions and improving as people. Which is why I picked up... wait here," Gwyn got up and jogged out of the room, returning a few seconds later with an obnoxious looking green hat and glasses that read "Happy New Year" and "2018" respectively.

"Boom! I figured you wouldn't be up to going out and celebrating or anything, so I thought I'd throw you one here," his smile was as goofy as his new accessories. Don't worry, I got you a nice tiara and some glasses too. Oh! And sparklers and poppers!"

He produced the tiara and glasses, waving them at Sam.
