A week after his ill-fated tour of the school, Shadow ventured out of his room for the second time. After he’d finally made it back to his room after that terrifying bell and the onslaught of people, he’d retreated to his room and despite summons to return to administration, Shadow had stayed where he was at. Then a strange thing happened. Shadow was restless. He never got restless, at least not in any time he could remember. Everything used to be so structured. They would bring him breakfast, he would eat, they would do something then lunch, etc., everything that happened was dictated to him. It was a funny thing, freedom, now that he had it he had no idea what to do with it. He felt even more lost than he did when he first came here.
This restlessness was something that staring out his window didn’t help. Outside was there, beckoning. He was tempted again and again before he finally pulled the trigger. Shade stood at the window, building up his courage and finally an opportunity came. The area he could see from his window had emptied, whether it was classes or meals, Shadow wasn’t sure. It wasn’t like he knew what the schedule was here. Shade made a rare spontaneous decision and ventured out of his room. Then he was outside. He inhaled deeply. The air tasted sweet and fresh, the scent of flowers and cut grass calling memories to the surface that for a rare moment, only had good feelings with them.
It was a cool evening, the sun was setting and the shadows stretched long and strong. For a moment, Shadow wasn’t afraid. Outside! He glanced apprehensively back at the building, expecting a rebuke, but none came. In fact, it seemed like there was no one here. The restless feeling pushed him onward and he explored the world around him. It was beautiful here, peaceful. Shade for a moment thought he may be able to get used to it here. The shadows ripped around him as he paced through them, to an onlooker it may have seemed like every time he passed through a shadow he vanished completely. Everything was so much better, Shadow thought, without light. Colors were less confusing and it less people were around. Shadow’s relaxed demeanor vanished in an instant when he rounded a corner and came face to face with another person. Shadow gathered the shadows around him quickly and disappeared into the darkness. He held his breath, watching and waiting, unsure if he had been seen or not.
